Replacing CC Unit with B←N Unit in Isoelectronic Conjugated Polymers for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Triazine and Fused Thiophene-Based Donor-Acceptor Type Semiconducting Conjugated Polymer for Enhanced Visible-Light-Induced H2 Production

Conjugated polymers have attracted significant attention in the field of photocatalysis due to their exceptional properties, including versatile optimization, cost-effectiveness, and structure stability. Herein, two conjugated porous polymers, PhIN-CPP and ThIN-CPP, based on triazines, were meticulously designed and successfully synthesized using benzene and thiophene as building blocks. Based on UV diffuse reflection spectra, the photonic band gaps of PhIN-CPP and ThIN-CPP were calculated as 2.05 eV and 1.79 eV. The PhIN-CPP exhibited a high hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 5359.92 μmol·g-1·h-1, which is 10 times higher than that of Thin-CPP (538.49 μmol·g-1·h-1). The remarkable disparity in the photocatalytic performance can be primarily ascribed to alterations in the band structure of the polymers, which includes its more stable benzene units, fluffier structure, larger specific surface area, most pronounced absorption occurring in the visible region and highly extended conjugation with a high density of electrons. The ΔEST values for PhIN-CPP and ThIN-CPP were calculated as 0.79 eV and 0.80 eV, respectively, based on DFT and TD-DFT calculations, which revealed that the incorporation of triazine units in the as-prepared CMPs could enhance the charge transfer via S1 ↔ T1 and was beneficial to the photocatalytic decomposition of H2O. This study presents a novel concept for developing a hybrid system for preparation of H2 by photocatalysis with effectiveness, sustainability, and economy.

Role of the Benzothiadiazole Unit in Organic Polymers on Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Organic polymers based on the donor-acceptor structure are a promising class of efficient photocatalysts for solar fuel production. Among these polymers, poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-1,2,3-benzothiadiazole) (PFBT) consisting of fluorene donor and benzothiadiazole acceptor units has shown good photocatalytic activity when it is prepared into polymer dots (Pdots) in water. In this work, we investigate the effect of the chemical environment on the activity of photocatalysis from PFBT Pdots for hydrogen production. This is carried out by comparing the samples with various concentrations of palladium under different pH conditions and with different sacrificial electron donors (SDs). Moreover, a model compound 1,2,3-benzothiadiazole di-9,9-dioctylfluorene (BTDF) is synthesized to investigate the mechanism for protonation of benzothiadiazole and its kinetics in the presence of an organic acid-salicylic acid by cyclic voltammetry. We experimentally show that benzothiadiazole in BTDF can rapidly react with protons with a fitted value of 0.1-5 × 1010 M-1 s-1 which should play a crucial role in the photocatalytic reaction with a polymer photocatalyst containing benzothiadiazole such as PFBT Pdots for hydrogen production in acidic conditions. This work gives insights into why organic polymers with benzothiadiazole work efficiently for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Organoboron flank-substituted donor-acceptor polymer anode with ultra-long cycling stability for lithium ion batteries

The tunable structure and other properties of organic materials suggest that they can potentially solve the shortcomings of traditional anodes such as graphite. We successfully introduced an organoboron unit into the thiophene-based polymer PBT-2 to construct a donor-acceptor polymer anode. The charge delocalization and LUMO energy level resulting from the unique structure of this material enabled good redox activity and a very stable electrochemical performance in electrochemical tests, with a reversible capacity of 262 mA h g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and >10 000 cycles at 1 A g-1 with a decay of 0.056‰ per cycle. Accordingly, targeted structural design to overcome the shortcomings of active units such as thiophene can effectively regulate their electrochemical performance, providing a solution for the development of high-performance anode materials for use in lithium ion batteries.
