CMOS-Compatible Tellurium/Silicon Ultra-Fast Near-Infrared Photodetector

Nitrogen-Doped 3D-Graphene Advances Near-Infrared Photodetector for Logic Circuits and Image Sensors Overcoming 2D Limitations

The limitations of two-dimensional (2D) graphene in broadband photodetector are overcome by integrating nitrogen (N) doping into three-dimensional (3D) structures within silicon (Si) via plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) technology. This contributes to the construction of vertical Schottky heterojunction broad-spectrum photodetectors and applications in logic devices and image sensors. The natural nanoscale resonant cavity structure of 3D-graphene enhances photon capture efficiency, thereby increasing photocarrier generation. N-doping can fine-tune the electronic structure, advancing the Schottky barrier height and reducing dark current. The as-fabricated photodetector exhibits exceptional self-driven photoresponse, especially at 1550 nm, with an excellent photoresponsivity (79.6 A/W), specific detectivity (1013 Jones), and rapid response of 130 μs. Moreover, it enables logic circuits, high-resolution pattern image recognition, and broadband spectra recording across the visible to near-infrared range (400-1550 nm). This research will provide new views and technical support for the development and widespread application of high-performance semiconductor-based graphene broadband detectors.

Design and Development of Metasurface Materials for Enhancing Photodetector Properties

Recently, metasurface-based photodetectors (metaphotodetectors) have been developed and applied in various fields. Metasurfaces are artificial materials with unique properties that have emerged over the past decade, and photodetectors are powerful tools used to quantify incident electromagnetic wave information by measuring changes in the conductivity of irradiated materials. Through an efficient microstructural design, metasurfaces can effectively regulate numerous characteristics of electromagnetic waves and have demonstrated unique advantages in various fields, including holographic projection, stealth, biological image enhancement, biological sensing, and energy absorption applications. Photodetectors play a crucial role in military and civilian applications; therefore, efficient photodetectors are essential for optical communications, imaging technology, and spectral analysis. Metaphotodetectors have considerably improved sensitivity and noise-equivalent power and miniaturization over conventional photodetectors. This review summarizes the advantages of metaphotodetectors based on five aspects. Furthermore, the applications of metaphotodetectors in various fields including military and civil applications, are systematically discussed. It highlights the potential future applications and developmental trends of metasurfaces in metaphotodetectors, provides systematic guidance for their development, and establishes metasurfaces as a promising technology.

Large-Area Fabrication of Hexaazatrinaphthylene-Based 2D Metal-Organic Framework Films for Flexible Photodetectors and Optoelectronic Synapses

2D conjugated metal-organic frameworks (c-MOFs) have emerged as promising materials for (opto)electronic applications due to their excellent charge transport properties originating from the unique layered-stacked structures with extended in-plane conjugation. The further advancement of MOF-based (opto)electronics necessitates the development of novel 2D c-MOF thin films with high quality. Cu-HHHATN (HHHATN: hexahydroxyl-hexaazatrinaphthylene) is a recently reported 2D c-MOF featuring high in-plane conjugation, strong interlayer π-π stacking, and multiple coordination sites, while the production of its thin-film form has not yet been reported. Herein, large-area Cu-HHHATN thin films with preferential orientation, high uniformity, and smooth surfaces are realized by using a convenient layer-by-layer growth method. Flexible photodetectors are fabricated, showing broadband photoresponse ranging from UV to short-wave infrared (370 to 1450 nm). The relatively long relaxation time of photocurrent, which arises from the trapping of photocarriers, renders the device's synaptic plasticity similar to that of biological synapses, promising its use in neuromorphic visual systems. This work demonstrates the great potential of Cu-HHHATN thin films in flexible optoelectronic devices for various applications.

Extensible Integrated System for Real-Time Monitoring of Cardiovascular Physiological Signals and Limb Health

In recent decades, the rapid growth in flexible materials, new manufacturing technologies, and wearable electronics design techniques has helped establish the foundations for noninvasive photoelectric sensing systems with shape-adaptability and "skin-like" properties. Physiological sensing includes humidity, mechanical, thermal, photoelectric, and other aspects. Photoplethysmography (PPG), an important noninvasive method for measuring pulse rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen, uses the attenuated signal obtained by the light absorbed and reflected from living tissue to a light source to realize real-time monitoring of human health status. This work illustrates a patch-type optoelectronic system that integrates a flexible perovskite photodetector and all-inorganic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to realize the real-time monitoring of human PPG signals. The pulse rate of the human body and the swelling degree of finger joints can be extracted and analyzed using photodetectors, thus monitoring human health for the prevention and early diagnosis of certain diseases. Specifically, this work develops a 3D wrinkled-serpentine interconnection wire that increases the shape adaptability of the device in practical applications. The PPG signal sensor reported in this study has considerable potential for future wearable intelligent medical applications.

MXene-Induced Flexible, Water-Retention, Semi-Interpenetrating Network Hydrogel for Ultra-Stable Strain Sensors with Real-Time Gesture Recognition

As water-saturated polymer networks, hydrogels are a growing family of soft materials that have recently become promising candidates for flexible electronics application. However, it remains still difficult for hydrogel-based strain sensors to achieve the organic unity of mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and water retention. To address this challenge, based on the template, the excellent properties of MXene nanoflakes (rich surface functional groups, high specific surface area, hydrophilicity, and conductivity) are fully utilized in this study to prepare the P(AA-co-AM)/MXene@PDADMAC semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) hydrogel. The proposed hydrogel continues to exhibit excellent strain response and flexibility after 30 days of storage at room temperature, and its performance do not decrease after 1100 cycles. Considering these characteristics, a hydrogel-based device for converting sign language into Chinese characters is successfully developed and optimized using machine learning. Therefore, this study provides novel insight and application directions for hydrogel families.
