Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives-Based Nanostructure with Different Dimensionalities for Supercapacitors

High performance supercapacitors deploying cube-templated tracheid cavities of wood-derived carbon

Wood-derived carbon, with its strong tracheid array structure, is an ideal material for use as a self-supporting electrode in supercapacitors. By leveraging the inherent through pore structure and surface affinity found in wood tracheids, we successfully engineered a highly spatially efficient cube-templated porous carbon framework inside carbonized wood tracheid cavities through precise control over precursor crystallization temperatures. This innovative cubic channel architecture effectively maximizes up to (79 ± 1)% of the cavity volume in wood-derived carbon while demonstrating exceptional hydrophilicity and high conductivity properties, facilitating the development of supercapacitors with enhanced areal/volumetric capacitances (2.65F cm-2/53.0F cm-3 at 5.0 mA cm-2) as well as superior areal/volumetric energy densities (0.37 mWh cm-2/7.36 mWh cm-3 at 2.5 mW cm-2). The fabrication of these cube-templated channels with high cube filling content is not only simple and precisely controllable, but also environmentally friendly. The proposed method eliminates the conventional acid-base treatment process for pore formation, facilitating the rapid development and practical implementation of thick electrodes with superior performance in supercapacitors. Moreover, it offers a universal research approach for the commercialization of wood-derived thick electrodes.

Sub-nanopores enabling optimized ion storage performance of carbon cathodes for Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors

Aqueous Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSs) are attracting significant attention as a promising electrochemical energy storage system. However, carbon cathodes of ZHSs exhibit unsatisfactory ion storage performance due to the large size of hydrated Zn-ions (e.g., [Zn(H2O)6]2+), which encumbers compact ion arrangement and rapid ion transport at the carbon-electrolyte interfaces. Herein, a porous carbon material (HMFC) with abundant sub-nanopores is synthesized to optimize the ion storage performance of the carbon cathode in ZHSs, in which the sub-nanopores effectively promote the dehydration of hydrated Zn-ions and thus optimize the ion storage performance of the carbon cathode in ZHSs. A novel strategy is proposed to study the dehydration behaviors of hydrated Zn-ions in carbon cathodes, including quantitatively determining the desolvation activation energy of hydrated Zn-ions and in-situ monitoring active water content at the carbon-electrolyte interface. The sub-nanopores-induced desolvation effect is verified, and its coupling with large specific surface area and hierarchically porous structure endows the HMFC cathode with improved electrochemical performance, including a 53 % capacity increase compared to the carbon cathode counterpart without sub-nanopores, fast charge/discharge ability that can output 46.0 Wh/kg energy within only 4.4 s, and 98.2 % capacity retention over 20,000 charge/discharge cycles. This work provides new insights into the rational design of porous carbon cathode materials toward high-performance ZHSs.

Amorphous/polycrystalline NiMn selenide for high-performance supercapacitors

Transition-metal selenides have been extensively studied as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. Engineering amorphous/crystalline heterostructures is an effective strategy to improve rich active sites for accelerating redox reaction kinetics but still lacks exploration. In this study, an amorphous/crystalline heterostructure was designed and constructed by selenizing the self-sacrificial template NiMnS to generate amorphous Mn/polycrystalline Ni0.85Se-NiSe2 heterophase via the phase transformation from metal sulfide into metal selenide. The synergy of the complementary multi-components and amorphous/polycrystalline heterophase could enrich electron/ion-transport channels and expose abundant active sites, which accelerated electron/ion transfer and Faradaic reaction kinetics during charging/discharging. As expected, the optimal NiMnSe exhibited a high specific charge (1389.1 C g-1 at 1 A g-1), a good rate capability, and an excellent lifespan (88.9% retention). Moreover, the fabricated NiMnSe//activated carbon device achieved a long cycle life and energy density of 48.0 W h kg-1 at 800 W kg-1, shedding light on the potential for use in practical applications, such as electrochemical energy-storage devices.

Design of heterostructured hydrangea-like FeS2/MoS2 encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon as high-performance anode for potassium-ion capacitors

The means of structural hybridization such as heterojunction construction and carbon-coating engineering for facilitating charge transfer and electron transport are considered viable strategies to address the challenges associated with the low rate capability and poor cycling stability of sulfide-based anodes in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Motivated by these concepts, we have successfully prepared a hydrangea-like bimetallic sulfide heterostructure encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (FMS@NC) using a simple solvothermal method, followed by poly-dopamine wrapping and a one-step sulfidation/carbonization process. When served as an anode for PIBs, this FMS@NC demonstrates a high specific capacity (585 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A/g) and long cycling stability. Synergetic effects of mitigated volume expansions and enhanced conductivity that are responsbile for such high performance have been verified to originate from the heterostructured sulfides and the N-doped carbon matrix. Meanwhile, comprehensive characterization reveals existence of an intercalation-conversion hybrid K-ion storage mechanism in this material. Impressively, a K-ion capacitor with the FMS@NC anode and a commercial activated carbon cathode exhibits a superior energy density of up to 192 Wh kg-1, a high power density, and outstanding cycling stability. This study provides constructive guidance for designing high-performance and durable potassium-ion storage anodes for next-generation energy storage devices.

Composite of CoS1.97 nanoparticles decorated CuS hollow cubes with rGO as thin film electrode for high-performance all solid flexible supercapacitors

Stretchable flexible thin-film electrodes are extensively explored for developing new wearable energy storage devices. However, traditional carbon-based materials used in such independent electrodes have limited practical applications owing to their low energy storage capacity and energy density. To address this, a unique structure and remarkable mechanical stability thin-film flexible positive electrode comprising CoS1.97 nanoparticles decorated hollow CuS cubes and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), hereinafter referred to as CCSrGO, is prepared. Transition metal sulfide CoS1.97 and CuS shows high energy density owing to the synergistic effects of its active components. The electrode can simultaneously meet the high-energy density and safety requirements of new wearable energy storage devices. The electrode has excellent electrochemical performance (1380 F/g at 1 A/g) and ideal capacitance retention (93.8 % after 10,000 cycles) owing to its unique three-dimensional hollow structure and polymetallic synergies between copper and cobalt elements, which are attributed to their different energy storage mechanisms. Furthermore, a flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (FASC) was constructed using CCSrGO as the positive electrode and rGO as the negative electrode (CCSrGO//rGO), which delivers an energy density of 100 Wh kg-1 and a corresponding power density of 2663 W kg-1 within a voltage window of 0-1.5 V. The resulting FASC can power a light-emitting diode (LED) at different bending and twisting angles, exerting little effect on the capacitance. Therefore, the prepared CCSrGO//rGO FASC devices show great application prospects in energy storage.

In Situ Construction of NiCoMn-LDH Derived from Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework on Eggshell-Like Carbon Skeleton for High-Performance Flexible Supercapacitors

Active compounds based on LDH (ternary layered double hydroxide) are considered the perfect supercapacitor electrode materials on account of their superior electrochemical qualities and distinct structural characteristics, and flexible supercapacitors are an ideal option as an energy source for wearable electronics. However, the prevalent aggregation effect of LDH materials results in significantly compromised actual specific capacitance, which limits its broad practical applications. In this research, a 3D eggshell-like interconnected porous carbon (IPC) framework with confinement and isolation capability is designed and synthesized by using glucose as the carbon source to disperse the LDH active material and enhance the conductivity of the composite material. Second, by constructing NiCoMn-LDH nanocage structure based on ZIF-67 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-67) at the nanometer scale the obtained IPC/NiCoMn-LDH electrode material can expose more active sites, which allows to achieve excellent specific capacitance (2236 F g-1/ 310.6 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1), good rate as well as the desired cycle stability (85.9% of the initial capacitance upon 5000 cycles test). The constructed IPC/NiCoMn-LDH//IPC ASC (asymmetric supercapacitor) exhibits superior capacitive property (135 F g-1/60.1 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1) as well as desired energy density (40 Wh kg-1 at 800 W kg-1).

Construction of CoNi2S4/Co9S8@Co4S3 nanocubes derived from Ni-Co prussian blue analogues@cobalt carbonate hydroxide core-shell heterostructure for asymmetric supercapacitor

Construction of Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) with heterostructure is beneficial to preparing PBAs derivatives with superior electrochemical performance. In this work, the core-shell nanostructured nanocubes composed of nickel hexacyanocobalt PBA (NiCo-PBA)@cobalt carbonate hydroxide (CCH) are synthesized through an in-situ epitaxial growth strategy, and the formation mechanisms of coating are carefully validated and specifically discussed. Then, the precursors are successfully transformed into hierarchical CoNi2S4/Co9S8@Co4S3 via the gas-phase vulcanization method. Benefiting from the intriguing heterostructure and multicomponent sulfides, the CoNi2S4/Co9S8@Co4S3-80 electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 799 ± 16C/g (specific capacitance of 1595 ± 31F/g) at 1 A/g, ultra-high capacity retention of 80 % at a high current density of 20 A/g. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device delivers a high energy density of 43.3 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 899 W kg-1 and exhibits superior cycling stability with the capacity retention of 88 % after 5,000 cycles. Subsequently, the fabricated all-solid-state ASC device shows an excellent energy density of 36.4 Wh kg-1 with a power density of 824 W kg-1. This work proposing rational design of combining multicomponent sulfides and core-shell heterostructure based on PBA nanocubes opens up a novel route for developing asymmetric supercapacitor electrode materials with superior performance.

Construction of rod-like cobalt-pyridinedicarboxylic acid/MXene nanosheets composites for hydrogen evolution reaction and supercapacitor

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention in the field of energy storage and conversion due to their large specific surface area, regulatable pore structure and composition. However, the poor electrical conductivity and few active sites of MOFs impede their application. Herein, highly conductive MXene nanosheets are introduced to modulate the electronic conductivity and structure of rod-like Co-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (Co-PDC), and thus enhancing the electrochemical performance of MOFs. The heterostructural Co-PDC/MXene (CPM) was facily synthesized at room temperature. The as-prepared CPM-30 with 30 % MXene only requires the overpotential of 75.1 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and the assembled electrolytic cell with CPM-30 and RuO2 as cathode and anode electrodes can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a voltage of 1.65 V. In addition, CPM-10 exhibits a high specific capacitance of 583.1 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and an excellent rate performance of 41.6 % at 50 A g-1. Furthermore, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor CPM-10//AC exhibited an energy density of 15.55 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 750 W kg-1 and excellent stability with a capacitance retention rate of 95 % after 10,000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical properties of Co-PDC/MXene are attributed to the unique structure and synergistic effect of Co-PDC and MXene.

Tailoring NiCoCu layered double hydroxide with Ag-citrate/polyaniline/functionalized SWCNTs nanocomposites for supercapacitor applications

Supercapacitors have substantially altered the landscape of sophisticated energy storage devices with their exceptional power density along with prolonged cyclic stability. On the contrary, their energy density remains low, requiring research to compete with conventional battery storage devices. This study addresses the disparities between energy and power densities in energy storage technologies by exploring the integration of layered double hydroxides (LDH) and highly conductive materials to develop an innovative energy storage system. Four electrodes were fabricated via a hydrothermal process using NiCoCu LDH, Ag-citrate, PANI, and f-SWCNTs. The optimal electrode demonstrated exceptional electrochemical properties; at 0.5 A g-1, it possessed specific capacitances of 807 F g-1, twice as high as those of the pure sample. The constructed asymmetric supercapacitor device attained energy densities of 62.15 W h kg-1 and 22.44 W h kg-1, corresponding to power densities of 1275 W kg-1 and 11 900 W kg-1, respectively. Furthermore, it maintained 100% cyclic stability and a coulombic efficiency of 95% for 4000 charge-discharge cycles. The concept of a supercapacitor of the hybrid grade was reinforced by power law investigations, which unveiled b-values in the interval of 0.5 to 1. This research emphasizes the considerable potential of supercapacitor-grade NiCoCu LDH/Ag-citrate-PANI-f-SWCNTs nanocomposites for superior rate performance, robust cycle stability, and enhanced energy storage capacity.

All-Covalent Organic Framework Nanofilms Assembled Lithium-Ion Capacitor to Solve the Imbalanced Charge Storage Kinetics

Free-standing covalent organic framework (COFs) nanofilms exhibit a remarkable ability to rapidly intercalate/de-intercalate Li+ in lithium-ion batteries, while simultaneously exposing affluent active sites in supercapacitors. The development of these nanofilms offers a promising solution to address the persistent challenge of imbalanced charge storage kinetics between battery-type anode and capacitor-type cathode in lithium-ion capacitors (LICs). Herein, for the first time, custom-made COFBTMB-TP and COFTAPB-BPY nanofilms are synthesized as the anode and cathode, respectively, for an all-COF nanofilm-structured LIC. The COFBTMB-TP nanofilm with strong electronegative-CF3 groups enables tuning the partial electron cloud density for Li+ migration to ensure the rapid anode kinetic process. The thickness-regulated cathodic COFTAPB-BPY nanofilm can fit the anodic COF nanofilm in the capacity. Due to the aligned 1D channel, 2D aromatic skeleton and accessible active sites of COF nanofilms, the whole COFTAPB-BPY//COFBTMB-TP LIC demonstrates a high energy density of 318 mWh cm-3 at a high-power density of 6 W cm-3, excellent rate capability, good cycle stability with the capacity retention rate of 77% after 5000-cycle. The COFTAPB-BPY//COFBTMB-TP LIC represents a new benchmark for currently reported film-type LICs and even film-type supercapacitors. After being comprehensively explored via ex situ XPS, 7Li solid-state NMR analyses, and DFT calculation, it is found that the COFBTMB-TP nanofilm facilitates the reversible conversion of semi-ionic to ionic C-F bonds during lithium storage. COFBTMB-TP exhibits a strong interaction with Li+ due to the C-F, C=O, and C-N bonds, facilitating Li+ desolation and absorption from the electrolyte. This work addresses the challenge of imbalanced charge storage kinetics and capacity between the anode and cathode and also pave the way for future miniaturized and wearable LIC devices.

Controlled Construction of Core-Shell Structured Prussian Blue Analogues towards Enhanced Oxygen Reduction

Metal-organic frameworks-based electrocatalysts have been developed as highly desirable and promising candidates for catalyzing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which, however, usually need to be prepared at elevated temperatures and may suffer from the framework collapse in water environments, largely preventing its industrial application. Herein, this work demonstrates a facile low-temperature ion exchange method to synthesize Mn and Fe co-loaded Prussian blue analogues possessing core-shell structured frameworks and favorable water-tolerance. Among the catalysts prepared, the optimal HMPB-2.6Mn shows a high ORR electrocatalytic performance featuring a half-wave potential of 0.86 V and zinc-air battery power density of 119 mW cm-2 , as well as negligible degradation up to 60 h, which are comparable to commercial Pt/C. Such an excellent electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the special core-shell-like structure with Mn concentrated in outer shell, and the synergetic interactions between Mn and Fe, endowing HMPB-Mn with outstanding ORR activity and good stability.

In situ selective selenization of ZIF-derived CoSe2 nanoparticles on NiMn-layered double hydroxide@CuBr2 heterostructures for high performance supercapacitors

As an emerging energy storage device, the practical application of supercapacitors (SCs) is currently constrained by their low energy density. Enhancing the capacitance of supercapacitors by leveraging the synergistic effect of multiple components in composite electrodes with well-designed structures can effectively increase their energy density. Here, a wire-sheet-particle hierarchical heterostructured CoSe2@NiMn-layered double hydroxide (NiMn-LDH) @Cu1.8Se/Copper foam (CF) electrode is synthesized via phase pseudomorphic transformation process achieved by selective selenization for Cu and Co elements. Benefiting from the stable support structure of CuBr2, the large specific surface area of NiMn-LDH, and the excellent conductivity of CoSe2, the prepared binder-free electrode shows excellent electrochemical properties. The CoSe2@NiMn-LDH@Cu1.8Se hybrid electrode exhibits a superior specific areal capacitance of 7064 mF cm-2 at 2 mA cm-2 and a stable cyclic performance with 80.11 % capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. Furthermore, the assembled CoSe2@NiMn-LDH@Cu1.8Se/CF//AC (activated carbon) asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) achieves an energy density of 36.6 Wh kg-1 when the power density is 760.6 W Kg-1 and retains 87.35 % of the initial capacitance after 5000 cycles. Overall, this pioneering research provided new insight for preparing supercapacitor electrode materials by selective selenization and ration design of the structures.

Construction of Binder-Free, Self-Supported, Hetero-Core-Shell Honeycomb Structured CuCo2 O4 @Ni0.5 Co0.5 (OH)2 with Abundant Mesopores and High Conductivity for High-Performance Energy Storage

Clever and rational design of structural hierarchy, along with precise component adjustment, holds profound significance for the construction of high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials. In this study, a binder-free self-supported CCO@N0.5 C0.5 OH/NF cathode material is constructed with hierarchical hetero-core-shell honeycomb nanostructure by first growing CuCo2 O4 (CCO) nanopin arrays uniformly on highly conductive nickel foam (NF) substrate, and then anchoring Ni0.5 Co0.5 (OH)2 (N0.5 C0.5 OH) bimetallic hydroxide nanosheet arrays on the CCO nanopin arrays by adjusting the molar ratio of Ni(OH)2 and Co(OH)2 . The constructed CCO@N0.5 C0.5 OH/NF electrode material showcases a wealth of multivalent metal ions and mesopores, along with good electrical conductivity, excellent electrochemical reaction rates, and robust long-term performance (capacitance retention rate of 87.2%). The CCO@N0.5 C0.5 OH/NF electrode, benefiting from the hierarchical structure of the material and the exceptional synergy between multiple components, demonstrates an excellent specific capacitance (2553.6 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 ). Furthermore, the assembled asymmetric CCO@N0.5 C0.5 OH/NF//AC/NF supercapacitor demonstrates a high energy density (70.1 Wh kg-1 at 850 W kg-1 ), and maintains robust capacitance cycling stability performance (83.7%) after undergoing 10 000 successive charges and discharges. It is noteworthy that the assembled supercapacitor exhibits an operating voltage (1.7 V) that is well above the theoretical value (1.5 V).

High-mass-loading cobalt iron phosphide@nickel vanadium layered double hydroxide heterogeneous nanosheet arrays for hybrid supercapacitors

Designing multidimensional heterostructures on flexible substrates is an efficient approach to resolve the low energy density of supercapacitors. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) porous cobalt iron phosphide (CoFeP)@nickel vanadium-layered double hydroxide (NiV-LDH) heterostructure has been prepared anchored on carbon cloth (CC) substrate. In this nanoarchitecture, NiV-LDH nanosheets are densely wrapped on the surface of CoFeP nanosheets, which forms a hierarchically porous framework with an enlarged surface area and accessible pore channels. Benefiting from the strong interaction and synergistic effect between CoFeP and NiV-LDH, the well-defined heterostructure can realize simultaneously rich redox active sites, rapid reaction dynamics, and good structural stability. Thus, the binder-free CoFeP@NiV-LDH electrode with a high mass loading of 6.47 mg cm-2 displays a significantly increased specific capacity of 903.1C g-1 (2.35C cm-2) at 1 A g-1 and enhanced rate capability when compared to pristine CoFeP and NiV-LDH. Additionally, the assembled hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) yields an energy density of 77.9 Wh kg-1/0.98 Wh cm-2 and excellent long-term stability. This research proposes a rational route for designing heterogeneous micro-/nanoarchitectures with commercial-level mass loading for the practical application of high-energy-density supercapacitors.
