Hybrid organic frameworks: Synthesis strategies and applications in photocatalytic wastewater treatment - A review

Hybrid organic framework materials are a class of hierarchical porous crystalline materials that have emerged in recent years, composed of three types of porous crystal materials, namely metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs). The combination of various organic framework properties in hybrid organic frameworks generates synergistic effects, which has attracted widespread attention from researchers. The synthesis methods of hybrid organic frameworks are also an intriguing topic, enabling the formation of core-shell heterostructures through epitaxial growth, template conversion, medium growth, or direct combination. These hybrid organic framework materials have demonstrated remarkable performance in the application of photocatalytic wastewater purification and have developed various forms of applications. This article reviews the preparation principles and methods of various hybrid organic frameworks and provides a detailed overview of the research progress of photocatalytic water purification hybrid organic frameworks. Finally, the challenges and development prospects of hybrid organic framework synthesis and their application in water purification are briefly discussed.

MOF-Based Photocatalytic Membrane for Water Purification: A Review

Photocatalytic membranes can effectively integrate membrane separation and photocatalytic degradation processes to provide an eco-friendly solution for efficient water purification. It is of great significance to develop highly efficient photocatalytic membranes driven by visible light to ensure the long-term stability of membrane separation systems and the maximum utilization of solar energy. Metal-organic framework (MOF) is an emerging photocatalyst with a well-defined structure and tunable chemical properties, showing a broad application prospect in the construction of high-performance photocatalytic membranes. Herein, this work provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Initially, this work outlines the main tailoring strategies that facilitate the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of MOF-based photocatalysts. Next, this work introduces commonly used methods for fabricating MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Subsequently, this work discusses the application and mechanisms of MOF-based photocatalytic membranes toward organic pollutant degradation, metal ion removal, and membrane fouling mitigation. Finally, challenges in developing MOF-based photocatalytic membranes and their practical applications are presented, while also pointing out future research directions toward overcoming these existing limitations.

TPN-COF@Fe-MIL-100 composite used as an electrochemical aptasensor for detection of trace tetracycline residues

In this work, a metal-organic framework@covalent organic framework composite (TPN-COF@Fe-MIL-100) was prepared and used as a sensing material to construct an aptasensor for trace detection of tetracycline (TET). The TPN-COF@Fe-MIL-100 integrates a large surface area, porous structure, excellent electrochemical activity, rich chemical functionality, and strong bioaffinity for aptamers, providing abundant active sites to effectively anchor aptamer strands. As a result, the TPN-COF@Fe-MIL-100-based aptasensor shows high sensitivity for detecting TET via specific recognition between aptamer and TET to form G-quadruplex. An ultralow detection limit of 1.227 fg mL-1 is deduced from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy within a wide linear range of 0.01-10000 pg mL-1 for TET. The TPN-COF@Fe-MIL-100-based aptasensor also exhibits good selectivity, reproducibility, stability, regenerability, and applicability for a real milk sample. Therefore, the TPN-COF@Fe-MIL-100-based aptasensor will be promising for detecting trace harmful antibiotics residues for food safety.

Metal-organic frameworks in photocatalytic Z-scheme heterojunctions: an emerging technology

There is an urgent need for cleaner production processes for chemicals. An efficient and promising alternative for such reactions is heterogeneous photocatalysis, which works on the principle of converting (visible) light, including solar energy, into chemical energy. To that end, properly designed semiconductor based photocatalysts are necessary to trigger the photocatalytic reactions. Many commonly used photocatalysts have too large bandgaps (3-3.4 eV) to use visible light and a too low surface area for efficient production. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as an encouraging class of materials for photocatalytic applications due to their (i) large surface area and porosity that facilitate adsorption towards chemicals, (ii) tunable crystallinity and optical and electronic properties for efficient light absorption in the visible region, (iii) tunable composition and functionality that make them versatile photocatalysts for a wide range of reactions, and (iv) facile development of composites with other semiconductors to produce Z-scheme heterojunctions that can effectively suppress the recombination of photogenerated charges. Ongoing research has started focusing on the judicious construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions in MOFs, to mimic natural photosynthesis, such that the MOF photocatalysts have higher light harvesting capacity, spatially separated reductive and oxidative active sites, and well-preserved redox ability. This review provides a concise compilation of the recent progress in the development and applications of MOF-based Z-scheme photocatalysts, their advanced characterization, and future perspectives for further advancements.

Construction of MOF@COF composite-based electrochemical aptasensor for detection of Staphylococcus aureus

In this work, a biological metal-organic framework@conductive covalent organic framework composite (bio-MOF@con-COF, denoted as Zn-Glu@PTBD-COF, here, Glu indicates L-glutamic acid, PT indicates 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarbaldehyde, and BD indicates benzene-1,4-diamine) was prepared and used as sensing material to fabricate aptasensor for trace detection of Staphylococcus aureus (SA). The Zn-Glu@PTBD-COF integrates the mesoporous structure and abundant defects of the MOF framework, the excellent conductivity of the COF framework, and high stability of the composite, providing abundant active sites to effectively anchor aptamers. As a result, the Zn-Glu@PTBD-COF-based aptasensor shows high sensitivity to detect SA via specific recognition between aptamer and SA, as well as the formation of aptamer-SA complex. Low detection limits of 2.0 and 1.0 CFU·mL^-1 are deduced from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and differential pulse voltammetry within a wide linear range of 10-10⁸ CFU·mL^-1 for SA, respectively. Progress in the Foaming of Polymer-based Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Composites by Supercritical CO2

As a critical action plan formulated for peaking carbon dioxide emissions, polymeric electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials based on CO₂ foaming technology have recently been attracting widespread attention in both research and industry, attributable to their efficient use of CO₂ , high specific strength, corrosion resistance and low-cost characteristics. In the past decade, the emergence of novel design concepts and preparation techniques for CO₂ foaming technology has led to the development of new high-performance EMI shielding materials in this field. This review summarizes the research progress made to date on the fabrication of EMI shielding composite foams by supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂ ) foaming. We also explore the structure-activity relationships between the component/distribution and EMI shielding properties. Additionally, the application prospects and development challenges of new EMI shielding composite foams are described.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Photocatalysis for Solar Fuel Production

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a novel class of crystalline inorganic-organic hybrid materials with tunable semiconducting behavior. MOFs have potential for application in photocatalysis to produce sustainable solar fuels, owing to their unique structural advantages (such as clarity and modifiability) that can facilitate a deeper understanding of the structure-activity relationship in photocatalysis. This review takes the photocatalytic active sites as a particular perspective, summarizing the progress of MOF-based photocatalysis for solar fuel production; mainly including three categories of solar-chemical conversions, photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen fuel, photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction to hydrocarbon fuels, and photocatalytic nitrogen fixation to high-energy fuel carriers such as ammonia. This review focuses on the types of active sites in MOF-based photocatalysts and discusses their enhanced activity based on the well-defined structure of MOFs, offering deep insights into MOF-based photocatalysis.
