Emerging Applications of Synchrotron Radiation X-Ray Techniques in Single Atomic Catalysts

Synchrotron Radiation Based X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy: Fundamentals and Applications in Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis is one of the most promising green technologies to utilize solar energy for clean energy achievement and environmental governance. There is a knotty problem to rational designing high-performance photocatalyst, which largely depends on an in-depth insight into their structure-activity relationships and complex photocatalytic reaction mechanisms. Synchrotron radiation based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is an important characterization method for photocatlayst to offer the element-specific key geometric and electronic structural information at the atomic level, on this basis, time-resolved XAS technique has a huge impact on mechanistic understanding of photochemical reaction owing to their powerful ability to probe, in real-time, the electronic and geometric structures evolution within photocatalysis reactions. This review will focus on the fundamentals of XAS and their applications in photocatalysis. The detailed applications obtained from XAS is described through the following aspects: 1) identifying local structure of photocatalyst; 2) uncovering in situ structure and chemical state evolution during photocatalysis; 3) revealing the photoexcited process. We will provide an in depth understanding on how the XAS method can guide the rational design of highly efficient photocatalyst. Finally, a systematic summary of XAS and related significance is made and the research perspectives are suggested.

Heteroatom-Doped Molybdenum Disulfide Nanomaterials for Gas Sensors, Alkali Metal-Ion Batteries and Supercapacitors

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is the second two-dimensional material after graphene that received a lot of attention from the research community. Strong S-Mo-S bonds make the sandwich-like layer mechanically and chemically stable, while the abundance of precursors and several developed synthesis methods allow obtaining various MoS2 architectures, including those in combinations with a carbon component. Doping of MoS2 with heteroatom substituents can occur by replacing Mo and S with other cations and anions. This creates active sites on the basal plane, which is important for the adsorption of reactive species. Adsorption is a key step in the gas detection and electrochemical energy storage processes discussed in this review. The literature data were analyzed in the light of the influence of a substitutional heteroatom on the interaction of MoS2 with gas molecules and electrolyte ions. Theory predicts that the binding energy of molecules to a MoS2 surface increases in the presence of heteroatoms, and experiments showed that such surfaces are more sensitive to certain gases. The best electrochemical performance of MoS2-based nanomaterials is usually achieved by including foreign metals. Heteroatoms improve the electrical conductivity of MoS2, which is a semiconductor in a thermodynamically stable hexagonal form, increase the distance between layers, and cause lattice deformation and electronic density redistribution. An analysis of literature data showed that co-doping with various elements is most attractive for improving the performance of MoS2 in sensor and electrochemical applications. This is the first comprehensive review on the influence of foreign elements inserted into MoS2 lattice on the performance of a nanomaterial in chemiresistive gas sensors, lithium-, sodium-, and potassium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors. The collected data can serve as a guide to determine which elements and combinations of elements can be used to obtain a MoS2-based nanomaterial with the properties required for a particular application.

Atomic Aerogel Materials (or Single-Atom Aerogels): An Interesting New Paradigm in Materials Science and Catalysis Science

The concept of "single-atom catalysis" is first proposed by Tao Zhang, Jun Li, and Jingyue Liu in 2011. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have a very high catalytic activity and greatly improved atom utilization ratio. At present, SACs have become frontier materials in the field of catalysis. Aerogels are highly porous materials with extremely low density and extremely high porosity. These pores play a key role in determining their surface reactivity and mechanical stability. The alliance of SACs and aerogels can fully reflect their structural advantages and lead to new enhancement effects. Herein, a general concept of "atomic aerogel materials" (AAMs) (or single-atom aerogels (SAAs)) is proposed to describe this interesting new paradigm in both material and catalysis fields. Based on the basic units of "gel," the AAMs can be divided into two categories: carrier-level AAMs (with micro-, nano-, or sub-nanometer pore structures) and atomic-level AAMs (with atomic-defective or oxygen-bridged sub-nanopore structures). The basic unit of the former (i.e., single-atom-functionalized aerogels) is the carrier materials in nanostructures, and the latter (i.e., single-atom-built aerogels) is the single metal atoms in atomic structures. The atomic-defective or oxygen-bridged AAMs will be important development directions in versatile heterogeneous catalytic or noncatalytic fields. The design proposals, latent challenges, and coping strategies of this new "atomic nanosystem" in applications are pointed out as well.
