Recent Advances for High-Entropy based Layered Cathodes for Sodium Ion Batteries

Cation Configuration and Structural Degradation of Layered Transition Metal Oxides in Sodium-Ion Batteries

Given the pressing depletion of lithium resources, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) stand out as a cost-effective alternative for energy storage solutions in the near future. Layered transition metal oxides (LTMOs) emerge as the leading cathode materials for SIBs due to their superior specific capacities and abundant raw materials. Nonetheless, achieving long-term stability in LTMOs for SIBs remains a challenge due to the inevitable structural degradation during charge-discharge cycles. The complexity and diversity of cation configurations/superstructures within the transition metal layers (TMO2) further complicate the understanding for newcomers. Therefore, it is critical to summarize and discuss the factors leading to structural degradation and the available strategies for enhancing LTMOs' stability. In this review, the cationic configurations of TMO2 layers are introduced from a crystallographic perspective. It then identifies and examines four key factors responsible for structural decay, alongside the impacts of various modification strategies. Finally, more effective and practical research approaches for investigating LTMOs have been proposed. The work aims to enhance the comprehension of the structural deterioration of LTMOs and facilitate a substantial improvement in their cycle life and energy density.

Sodium layered oxide cathodes: properties, practicality and prospects

Rechargeable sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as an advanced electrochemical energy storage technology with potential to alleviate the dependence on lithium resources. Similar to Li-ion batteries, the cathode materials play a decisive role in the cost and energy output of SIBs. Among various cathode materials, Na layered transition-metal (TM) oxides have become an appealing choice owing to their facile synthesis, high Na storage capacity/voltage that are suitable for use in high-energy SIBs, and high adaptivity to the large-scale manufacture of Li layered oxide analogues. However, going from the lab to the market, the practical use of Na layered oxide cathodes is limited by the ambiguous understanding of the fundamental structure-performance correlation of cathode materials and lack of customized material design strategies to meet the diverse demands in practical storage applications. In this review, we attempt to clarify the fundamental misunderstandings by elaborating the correlations between the electron configuration of the critical capacity-contributing elements (e.g., TM cations and oxygen anion) in oxides and their influence on the Na (de)intercalation (electro)chemistry and storage properties of the cathode. Subsequently, we discuss the issues that hinder the practical use of layered oxide cathodes, their origins and the corresponding strategies to address their issues and accelerate the target-oriented research and development of cathode materials. Finally, we discuss several new Na layered cathode materials that show prospects for next-generation SIBs, including layered oxides with anion redox and high entropy and highlight the use of layered oxides as cathodes for solid-state SIBs with higher energy and safety. In summary, we aim to offer insights into the rational design of high-performance Na layered oxide cathode materials towards the practical realization of sustainable electrochemical energy storage at a low cost.

High-Entropy Oxides for Rechargeable Batteries

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have garnered significant attention within the realm of rechargeable batteries owing to their distinctive advantages, which encompass diverse structural attributes, customizable compositions, entropy-driven stabilization effects, and remarkable superionic conductivity. Despite the brilliance of HEOs in energy conversion and storage applications, there is still lacking a comprehensive review for both entry-level and experienced researchers, which succinctly encapsulates the present status and the challenges inherent to HEOs, spanning structural features, intrinsic properties, prevalent synthetic methodologies, and diversified applications in rechargeable batteries. Within this review, the endeavor is to distill the structural characteristics, ionic conductivity, and entropy stabilization effects, explore the practical applications of HEOs in the realm of rechargeable batteries (lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and lithium-sulfur batteries), including anode and cathode materials, electrolytes, and electrocatalysts. The review seeks to furnish an overview of the evolving landscape of HEOs-based cell component materials, shedding light on the progress made and the hurdles encountered, as well as serving as the guidance for HEOs compositions design and optimization strategy to enhance the reversible structural stability, electrical properties, and electrochemical performance of rechargeable batteries in the realm of energy storage and conversion.

Realizing long-term cycling stability of O3-type layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

O3-type layered oxide cathodes are promising for practical sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacity, facile synthesis, and sufficient Na+ storage. However, they face challenges such as rapid capacity loss and poor cycling stability, mainly attributed to irreversible phase transitions. To address these challenges, a novel cathode material, Li/Sn co-substituted O3-Na0.95Li0.07Sn0.01Ni0.22Fe0.2Mn0.5O2 (LSNFM), has been designed by regulating the electronic structure, in which Li+ activates more redox reactions of Ni2+/3+ and Fe3+/4+ above 2.5 V and suppresses the redox reactivity of Mn3+/4+ below 2.5 V, while Sn4+ can prevent the charge delocalization in the transition metal layer, contributing to structural stability. Due to this synergistic effect, the as-prepared LSNFM electrode with high structural reversibility displays a 27.2% capacity increase contributed by the high-voltage transition metal ion redox activity and exhibits excellent long-term cycling stability, an 84.0% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 1 C and an 84.7% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 5 C. The fundamental mechanism is fully investigated using systematic in situ/ex situ characterization techniques and density functional theory computations. This work provides a paradigm for designing long-term cycle life cathode materials by synergistically regulating the electronic structure in practical SIBs.

Fast Na+ Kinetics and Suppressed Voltage Hysteresis Enabled by a High-Entropy Strategy for Sodium Oxide Cathodes

O3-type layered transition metal cathodes are promising energy storage materials due to their sufficient sodium reservoir. However, sluggish sodium ions kinetics and large voltage hysteresis, which are generally associated with Na+ diffusion properties and electrochemical phase transition reversibility, drastically minimize energy density, reduce energy efficiency, and hinder further commercialization of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Here, this work proposes a high-entropy tailoring strategy through manipulating the electronic local environment within transition metal slabs to circumvent these issues. Experimental analysis combined with theoretical calculations verify that high-entropy metal ion mixing contributes to the improved reversibility of redox reaction and O3-P3-O3 phase transition behaviors as well as the enhanced Na+ diffusivity. Consequently, the designed O3-Na0.9Ni0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Mn0.2Ti0.15Cu0.05O2 material with high-entropy characteristic could display a negligible voltage hysteresis (<0.09 V), impressive rate capability (98.6 mAh g-1 at 10 C) and long-term cycling stability (79.4% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 5 C). This work provides insightful guidance in mitigating the voltage hysteresis and facilitating Na+ diffusion of layered oxide cathode materials to realize high-rate and high-energy SIBs.

Flame Spray Pyrolysis Synthesis of Ultra-Small High-Entropy Alloy-Supported Oxide Nanoparticles for CO2 Hydrogenation Catalysts

The synthesis of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with ultra-small particle sizes has long been a challenging task. The complex and time-consuming synthesis process hinders their practical application and widespread adoption. This study presents the novel synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles loaded with a quinary high-entropy alloy through flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) for the first time. The extremely fast heating rate of flame combustion makes the precursor fast pyrolysis gasification, high temperature in the flame field promotes the metal vapor mixing uniformly, and the fast quenching process can reduce the particle aggregation sintering, the ultra-small particle size of HEA firmly attached to the TiO2 surface. The catalysts prepared via this gas-to-particle pathway exhibit excellent performance in CO2 hydrogenation, achieving a conversion rate of 62% at 450 °C, and maintaining their activity for over 220 h without significant particle agglomeration. This finding provides valuable insights for the future design of catalytically active materials with enhanced activity and long-term stability.

High-Entropy Prussian Blue Analogues Enable Lattice Respiration for Ultrastable Aqueous Aluminum-Ion Batteries

Aqueous aluminum ion batteries (AAIBs) hold significant potential for grid-scale energy storage owing to their intrinsic safety, high theoretical capacity, and abundance of aluminum. However, the strong electrostatic interactions and delayed charge compensation between high-charge-density aluminum ions and the fixed lattice in conventional cathodes impede the development of high-performance AAIBs. To address this issue, this work introduces, for the first time, high-entropy Prussian blue analogs (HEPBAs) as cathodes in AAIBs with unique lattice tolerance and efficient multipath electron transfer. Benefiting from the intrinsic long-range disorder and robust lattice strain field, HEPBAs enable the manifestation of the lattice respiration effect and minimize lattice volume changes, thereby achieving one of the best long-term stabilities (91.2% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles at 5.0 A g-1) in AAIBs. Additionally, the interaction between the diverse metal atoms generates a broadened d-band and reduced degeneracy compared with conventional Prussian blue and its analogs (PBAs), which enhances the electron transfer efficiency with one of the best rate performance (79.2 mAh g-1 at 5.0 A g-1) in AAIBs. Furthermore, exceptional element selectivity in HEPBAs with unique cocktail effect can facile tune electrochemical behavior. Overall, the newly developed HEPBAs with a high-entropy effect exhibit promising solutions for advancing AAIBs and multivalent-ion batteries.

Recent advances and understanding of high-entropy materials for lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has extensively utilized in electric vehicles and portable electronics due to their high energy density and prolonged lifespan. However, the current commercial LIBs are plagued by relatively low energy density. High-entropy materials with multiple components have emerged as an efficient strategic approach for developing novel materials that effectively improve the overall performance of LIBs. This article provides a comprehensive review the recent advancements in rational design of innovative high-entropy materials for LIBs, as well as the exceptional lithium ion storage mechanism for high-entropy electrodes and considerable ionic conductivity for high-entropy electrolytes. This review also analyses the prominent effects of individual components on the high-entropy materials' exceptional capacity, considerable structural stability, rapid lithium ion diffusion, and excellent ionic conductivity. Furthermore, this review presents the synthesis methods and their influence on the morphology and properties of high-entropy materials. Ultimately, the remaining challenges and future research directions are outlined, aimed at developing more effective high-entropy materials and improving the overall electrochemical performance of LIBs.

Routes to high-performance layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are experiencing a large-scale renaissance to supplement or replace expensive lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and low energy density lead-acid batteries in electrical energy storage systems and other applications. In this case, layered oxide materials have become one of the most popular cathode candidates for SIBs because of their low cost and comparatively facile synthesis method. However, the intrinsic shortcomings of layered oxide cathodes, which severely limit their commercialization process, urgently need to be addressed. In this review, inherent challenges associated with layered oxide cathodes for SIBs, such as their irreversible multiphase transition, poor air stability, and low energy density, are systematically summarized and discussed, together with strategies to overcome these dilemmas through bulk phase modulation, surface/interface modification, functional structure manipulation, and cationic and anionic redox optimization. Emphasis is placed on investigating variations in the chemical composition and structural configuration of layered oxide cathodes and how they affect the electrochemical behavior of the cathodes to illustrate how these issues can be addressed. The summary of failure mechanisms and corresponding modification strategies of layered oxide cathodes presented herein provides a valuable reference for scientific and practical issues related to the development of SIBs.

Synergetic impact of high-entropy microdoping modification in Na3V2(PO4)3

High entropy polyanionic Na3V1.9(Ca,Mg,Cr,Ti,Mn)0.1(PO4)3 was synthesized, which activated a reversible redox reaction of V4+/V5+ and reached a remarkable capacity of 116 mA h g-1 at 1C and maintained 90% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 10C. Structure evolution and sodium storage mechanisms were revealed by an in situ XRD method, which disclosed the high-entropy effect of material design. Together with the full battery tests, these findings promote the wide applications of high-entropy polyanionic cathodes in SIBs.
