Magnetic and pH-responsive starch-g­-poly(acrylic acid-co­acrylamide)/graphene oxide superabsorbent nanocomposites: One-pot synthesis, characterization, and swelling behavior

Starch engineered with Moringa oleifera seeds protein crosslinked Fe3O4: A synthesis and flocculation studies

This study aimed to utilize cationic protein extracted from the Moringa oleifera seed in the fabrication of cationic starch crosslinked with magnetic nanoparticles (MagCS). Important synthesis parameters include starch to cationic protein volume ratio, magnetic nanoparticles mass fraction, reaction and crosslinking time, reaction and crosslinking temperature and crosslinker concentration. At optimum synthesis conditions, MagCS yield a 38.55% amide content, 2.46 degree of substitution, 1.1 mmol/g charge density and 78.6% crosslinking, which are much higher compared to other starch derivatives. A series of characterization analyses such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis and vibrating sample magnetometer concluded that MagCS was embedded with amide group, has high crystallinity structure, is thermally stable and shows a promising magnetic characteristic. Based on the synthesis parameters and characterization studies, the synthesis mechanism of MagCS was also postulated. The flocculation performance of MagCS was successfully assessed for the treatment of palm oil mill effluent. At optimum dosage, initial pH and settling time of 1.0 g/L, 9.0 and 15 min, the MagCS flocculant was able to remove 90.48, 83.95 and 58.19% of turbidity, color and chemical oxygen demand, respectively. This study provides an alternative eco-friendly materials in the wastewater treatment application.

Carbon Nanotubes Reinforced Maleic Anhydride-Modified Xylan-g-Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Hydrogel with Multifunctional Properties

Introducing multifunctional groups and inorganic material imparts xylan-based hydrogels with excellent properties, such as responsiveness to pH, temperature, light, and external magnetic field. In this work, a composite hydrogel was synthesized by introducing acid treated carbon nanotubes (AT-CNTs) into the maleic anhydride modified xylan grafted with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (MAX-g-PNIPAM) hydrogels network. It was found that the addition of AT-CNTs affected the MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogel structure, the swelling ratio and mechanical properties, and imparted the hydrogel with new properties of electrical conductivity and near infrared region (NIR) photothermal conversion. AT-CNTs could reinforce the mechanical properties of MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogels, being up to 83 kPa for the compressive strength when the amount was 11 wt %, which was eight times than that of PNIPAM hydrogel and four times than that of MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogel. The electroconductibility was enhanced by the increase of AT-CNTs amounts. Meanwhile, the composite hydrogel also exhibited multiple shape memory and NIR photothermal conversion properties, and water temperature was increased from 26 °C to 56 °C within 8 min under the NIR irradiation. Thus, the AT-CNTs reinforced MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogel possessed promising multifunctional properties, which offered many potential applications in the fields of biosensors, thermal-arrest technology, and drug-controlled release.

Coupled adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet under sunlight using chemically synthesized grafted sodium alginate/ZnO/graphene oxide composite

This research aimed to synthesize natural polymer nanocomposite and employ it for coupled adsorption- photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet. Sodium alginate-g-poly (acrylic acid-co-cinnamic acid) and its composites with ZnO nanorods and graphene oxide sheets were synthesized and characterized using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, HR-TEM and DR/UV-vis spectroscopy. The adsorption efficiency of samples for crystal violet has been studied in the dark. The effect of different parameters as pH, initial dye concentration, contact time and temperature on the adsorption efficiency of the synthesized sample has been examined. Kinetics studies showed that the adsorption of all samples was well described by the pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium adsorption results fitted Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity achieved at pH 5.0 was 13.85 mg g^-1. Thermodynamic studies exhibited that the adsorption is spontaneous, endothermic in nature and leads to higher entropy. Coupled adsorption-photocatalytic degradation studies under sunlight showed an enhancement in the removal efficiency by 10%. In the case of sodium alginate-g-poly (acrylic acid-co-cinnamic acid)/ZnO/graphene oxide composite, the removal efficiency after 5 h under sunlight was 94% versus 84% in the dark.
