Functionality and characterization of modified starch films with pineapple leaf fibers

The objective of this work was to modify banana starch with pineapple leaf fibers (PALF) and its production of biodegradable films. The reaction conditions of the starch modification were a Starch/PALF mass ratio of 50, a time of 1 h and a temperature of 140 °C, to obtain a yield of 41.18 %. Characterization by FTIR and NMR confirmed that the chemical reaction was carried out. XRD and TGA analysis showed that the crystalline zones of the starch were affected during the modification and the product obtained is thermally less stable compared to unmodified starch. The modified starch showed a lower pasting profile compared to the native starch; however, the modified starch showed the ability to form a film. The starch-PALF films were obtained by the casting method and partially characterized. These films presented better mechanical properties compared to the unmodified films. Also, these films could compete with conventional non-biodegradable plastics.

Evaluation of the effects of starch on polyhydroxybutyrate electrospun scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications

Efficient design for bone tissue engineering requires an understanding of the appropriate selection of biomimetic natural or synthetic materials and scalable fabrication technologies. In this research, poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and starch (5-15 wt%) as biological macromolecules were used to fabricate novel biomimetic scaffolds by electrospinning method. SEM results of electrospun scaffolds revealed bead-free nanofibers and three-dimensional homogenous structures with highly interconnected pores. Results of FTIR and Raman demonstrated that there were hydrogen bonds between the two polymers. The tensile strength of scaffolds was significantly improved by adding starch up to 10 wt%, from 3.05 to 15.54 MPa. In vitro degradation and hydrophilicity of the scaffolds were improved with the presence of starch. The viability and proliferation of MG-63 cells and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were remarkably increased in the PHB-starch scaffolds compared to the PHB and control samples. The mineralization and calcium deposition of MG-63 cells were confirmed by alizarin red staining. It is concluded that PHB/starch electrospun scaffold could be a good candidate for bone tissue engineering applications.

Technological potential of under-utilized starches from eight varieties of legumes grown in Cameroon

Starch samples from eight legumes cultivars instar of one variety of Vigna unguiculata L. (Cowpea), one variety of Vigna subterrenea V. (Bambara groundnut) and six varieties of Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Common bean), grown in Cameroon were isolated, and their physicochemical and pasting properties were evaluated. The objectives of the study were to investigate the starch properties and processing characteristics of different bean varieties, and to establish the basic foundation of improving the functionality of beans and their starch grown in the region. The result revealed significant differences amongst the properties of the starches. The swelling power of the legume starch isolates put them in the category of highly restricted-swelling starch. This characteristic is desirable for the manufacture of value-added products such as noodles and composite blends with cereals. The pasting properties were determined using a rapid visco analyzer, and various legumes bean starches exhibited different pasting profiles. The high breakdown viscosity (BV) was founded for Cowpea and Bambara groundnut and confirmed their low. ability to resist heat and shear stress when compared to Common bean varieties studies. The factors which influence the pasting characteristics resulting to decrease in peak viscosity (PV), trough viscosity (TV) and final viscosity (FV) of starch are attributed to the interaction of starch with the protein, fat, etc. which depended to their variety.

Thermal, morphological and structural characterization of a copolymer of starch and polyethylene

The objective of this paper was to perform a copolymerization between polyethylene and starch in order to obtain new environmentally friendly materials. The copolymer obtained was characterized thermally, morphologically and structurally, including its pasting profile. The starch-g-PE copolymer showed lower thermal stability compared to the control materials. FTIR analysis determined that the chemical bond signal between the starch and polyethylene in the copolymer overlaps with the native starch signals. The signal from this chemical bond was assigned by proton NMR spectroscopy at δ 4.45 ppm. X-ray studies of the copolymer showed a material with more amorphous characteristics compared to native starch. SEM analysis demonstrated the presence of cracks in the starch granules which favored the chemical interaction between the polymers. The pasting behavior of the copolymer was less pronounced compared to native starch. Therefore, the copolymerization of both polymers could be an alternative to recycle polyethylene and make biodegradable materials.
