Development of Antimicrobial Biodegradable Films Based on Corn Starch with Aqueous Extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa L

Development and characterization of pomegranate peel extract-functionalized jackfruit seed starch-based edible films and coatings for prolonging the shelf life of white grapes

In the current research, the pomegranate peel extract of varying concentrations (0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1 g/mL) were incorporated into jackfruit seed starch (5 % w/w) based edible films and coatings for the evaluation their effects on the mechanical, physical, barrier and thermal properties. Furthermore, the effects of the optimized edible coating were investigated on the postharvest shelf life of white grapes at room storage (30 ± 5 °C, RH = 70 ± 5 %) conditions for up to 8 days. The obtained results showed a significant increment in thickness (p ≤ 0.05) with higher concentration (0.1 g/mL) of pomegranate peel extract (PPE), total phenolic content (959.33 ± 43.36 mg/100 g) and antioxidant activity (87.35 ± 1.64 %) of the prepared edible films but have negative impacts on the water vapor permeability (2.82 × 10-6 ± 6.48 × 10-7 g-1h-1pa-1) and oxygen permeability (1.62 × 10-14 ± 9.32 × 10-15 cm3·cm/cm2·s·cmHg), solubility (23.24 ± 3.21 %), and tensile strength (1.60 ± 0.43 MPa). The edible film enriched with 0.4 g/mL of PPE showed higher thermal stability in terms of glass transition temperature (98.2 ± 0.21 °C) and peak temperature (110.3 ± 0.35 °C). Additionally, the application of coating treatment significantly maintains the postharvest shelf life of white grapes throughout the storage period.

Influence of Epilobium parviflorum Herbal Extract on Physicochemical Properties of Thermoplastic Starch Films

In this study, for the first time, Epilobium parviflorum Schreb. (E, hoary willowherb) aqueous extract was introduced into edible biopolymer films and its influence on physicochemical properties of the final products were investigated. Potato starch was gelatinized in the herbal tea to obtain thermoplastic starch (TPS) films via the casting method. The characterization of the films included mechanical, antioxidative, water (WVTR, contact angle, swelling degree) and UV radiation barrier properties as well as microstructure analysis (SEM). Obtained results indicated that the presence of the extract (rich in phenolic compounds) in the films acted as a co-plasticizer for starch and led to a higher elongation at break, up to 70%, with a parallel increase in tensile strength up to ca. 9 MPa. Moreover, TPS films with E exhibited lower WVTR values and absorption of UV light in comparison with the control TPS film. DPPH scavenging activity of TPS E films immersed in methanol was ca. 92%, and it was related to the release of the extract into liquid media. Novel TPS E films are characterized by multifunctional properties that can be used, e.g., in the active packaging sector.

Evaluation of the Antimicrobial, Thermal, Mechanical, and Barrier Properties of Corn Starch-Chitosan Biodegradable Films Reinforced with Cellulose Nanocrystals

Packaging materials play an essential role in the preservation and marketing of food and other products. To improve their conservation capacity, antimicrobial agents that inhibit bacterial growth are used. Biopolymers such as starch and chitosan are a sustainable alternative for the generation of films for packaging that can also serve as a support for preservatives and antimicrobial agents. These substances can replace packaging of synthetic origin and maintain good functional properties to ensure the quality of food products. Films based on a mixture of corn starch and chitosan were developed by the casting method and the effect of incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) at different concentrations (0 to 10% w/w) was studied. The effect of the incorporation of CNC on the rheological, mechanical, thermal and barrier properties, as well as the antimicrobial activity of nanocomposite films, was evaluated. A significant modification of the functional and antimicrobial properties of the starch–chitosan films was observed with an increase in the concentration of nanomaterials. The films with CNC in a range of 0.5 to 5% presented the best performance. In line with the physicochemical characteristics which are desired in antimicrobial materials, this study can serve as a guide for the development this type of packaging for food use.

Characterisation and Antibacterial Properties of Novel Biodegradable Films Based on Alginate and Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) Extract

Composite films were prepared with alginate and roselle extract (HE) at different concentrations (1%, 3%, and 5% w/v) via solvent casting technique and analyzed in terms of physical, mechanical, and antibacterial properties. The incorporation of HE into alginate films resulted in rough and heterogeneous surface characteristics with increasing concentrations of HE. The thickness and water vapor permeability of alginate-HE composite films were significantly higher (p < 0.05) compared to pure alginate films. Moreover, water content, solubility, swelling, tensile strength, and elongation at break value of the composite films decreased (p < 0.05) with increasing concentrations of the extract. FTIR spectra revealed shifts and intensity variations in the composite films and the formation of new peaks suggesting a possible interaction between alginate and HE. Alginate-HE films exhibited good antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacteria. The antibacterial effect of the films, more pronounced against Gram-positive bacteria, increased with higher amounts of HE. The resulting films may be utilised as new biodegradable, antibacterial films in the food packaging industry to prolong shelf life and preserve food safety.

Novel active starch films incorporating tea polyphenols-loaded porous starch as food packaging materials

A novel active food packaging film was developed by casting a corn starch/tea polyphenol (TP)-loaded porous starch (PS, obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis) film forming solution, with the latter helping to regulate the slow release of TP. Results showed that PS had a favorable TP adsorption capacity, and the casted films had a homogeneous distribution of the formulation components. Likewise, the active films had good mechanical properties, UV barrier properties, thermal stability, and excellent antioxidant properties. The slow release of TP from the films was sustained, which is a desired characteristic for extending the protection afforded by the active film to the food under consideration.

Effects of Poloxamer Content and Storage Time of Biodegradable Starch-Chitosan Films on Its Thermal, Structural, Mechanical, and Morphological Properties

Biodegradable packaging prepared from starch is an alternative to fossil-based plastic packaging. However, the properties of starch packaging do not comply with the necessary physicochemical properties to preserve food. Hence, in a previous study, we reported the preparation of a composite polymer material based on starch-chitosan-pluronic F127 that was found to be an adequate alternative packaging material. In this study, we modified the physicochemical properties of this material by storing it for 16 months under ambient conditions. The results indicate that the incorporation of pluronic F127 in the blend polymer can help avoid the retrogradation of starch. Moreover, at higher concentrations of pluronic F127, wettability is reduced. Finally, after storage, the materials exhibited surface modification, which is related to a color change and an increase in solubility, as well as a slight increase in stiffness.
