Alphabet-Inspired Design of (Hetero)Aromatic Push-Pull Chromophores

Synthesis, photophysics and two-photon absorption of imidazole-centred tripodal chromophores

Tripodal push-pull chromophores with D-(π-A)3 arrangement were synthesized using 1-methyl-2,4,5-triphenyl-1H-imidazole as a central electron donor, and their thermal, electrochemical, photophysical and non-linear optical properties were studied and corroborated with quantum-chemical calculations. Their facile synthesis involved Suzuki-Miyaura and Knoevenagel reactions, allowing the installation of various peripheral electron acceptors such as formyl, cyano, ester, trifluoromethyl and more complex moieties such as malonic/acetic acid derivatives, indan-1,3-dione and rhodanine. All phenyl rings appended at the central imidazole core were more or less twisted depending on the peripheral substitution. Although imidazole undergoes reversible one-electron oxidation, peripheral acceptors are reduced irreversibly in a multi-electron process. This behaviour is further seen as a variation of the LUMO, while the HOMO remained almost unaltered across the whole series. TD-DFT calculations revealed centrifugal charge transfer from the central imidazole to all C2, C4 and C5 branches occupied by the LUMO, LUMO+1 and LUMO+2. The HOMO-LUMO gap is tuneable within the range of 3.55-2.31 eV, while the longest-wavelength absorption/emission maxima were found within the broad range of 304-448/393-612 nm. Although the absorption spectra are solvent-independent, the emission depends strongly on the solvent polarity and the electron-withdrawing power of the peripheral acceptors. Extended chromophores with complex electron acceptors were investigated as two-photon absorbers, revealing relatively good cross-section values of up to 521 GM and a figure-of-merit (ΦF × δ2PA) of around 190 GM.

Sumanene-carbazole conjugate with push-pull structure and its chemoreceptor application

The first-of-its-kind tetra-substituted sumanene derivative, featuring the push-pull chromophore architecture, has been successfully designed. The inclusion of both strong electron-withdrawing (CF3) and electron-donating (carbazole) moieties in this buckybowl compound has enhanced the charge transfer characteristics of the molecule. This enhancement was supported by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and emission spectra analyses along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The application of the title sumanene-carbazole push-pull chromophore as a selective recognition material for cesium cations (Cs+) was also presented. The title compound exhibited effective and selective Cs+-trapping ability, characterized by a high apparent binding constant value (at the level of 105) and a low limit of detection (0.09-0.13 μM). Owing to the tuned optical properties of the title push-pull chromophore, this study marks the first time in sumanene-tethered chemoreceptor chemistry where efficient tracking of Cs+ binding was possible with both absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. This work introduces a new approach toward tuning the structure of bowl-shaped optical chemoreceptors.

D-π-A-π-D-Configured Imidazole-Tethered Benzothiadiazole-Based Sensor for the Ratiometric Discrimination of Picric Acid: Applications in Latent Fingerprint Imaging

A tetraphenyl imidazole-appended benzothiadiazole-based fluorogenic probe (4,7-bis(4-(1,4,5-triphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BIPT)) has been successfully synthesized and characterized by NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) spectral analyses. A low limit of detection (LOD) can be achieved to detect picric acid (PA; 7.89 nM). When benzothiadiazole acceptors are incorporated in the D-A-D probe, it can produce a large Stokes shift (206 nm) as a result. Fascinatingly, the fluorescence signals of BIPT were ratiometrically induced by the interaction with PA and exhibited an apparent emission shift from pink to green. The detection process of BIPT is triggered by an intermolecular charge transfer process, as the charge transfer takes place from the electron-rich imidazole to the electron-deficient PA. Moreover, fluorescence detection of PA has been employed in paper strips. Advantageously, sensor BIPT can potentially be applied to contact mode and real-time detection of PA in environmental water samples. Additionally, the BIPT sensor has been successfully employed for latent fingerprint imaging. The study provides clear insights into the rational design of chemosensors for sensing and real-time applications.

Self-Assembled Monolayers of Push-Pull Chromophores as Active Layers and Their Applications

In recent decades, considerable attention has been focused on the design and development of surfaces with defined or tunable properties for a wide range of applications and fields. To this end, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of organic compounds offer a unique and straightforward route of modifying and engineering the surface properties of any substrate. Thus, alkane-based self-assembled monolayers constitute one of the most extensively studied organic thin-film nanomaterials, which have found wide applications in antifouling surfaces, the control of wettability or cell adhesion, sensors, optical devices, corrosion protection, and organic electronics, among many other applications, some of which have led to their technological transfer to industry. Nevertheless, recently, aromatic-based SAMs have gained importance as functional components, particularly in molecular electronics, bioelectronics, sensors, etc., due to their intrinsic electrical conductivity and optical properties, opening up new perspectives in these fields. However, some key issues affecting device performance still need to be resolved to ensure their full use and access to novel functionalities such as memory, sensors, or active layers in optoelectronic devices. In this context, we will present herein recent advances in π-conjugated systems-based self-assembled monolayers (e.g., push-pull chromophores) as active layers and their applications.

Second-order nonlinear optical properties of X-shaped pyrazine derivatives

This work reports an investigation of the second-order NLO properties of two isomer series of X-shaped pyrazine derivatives, by means of HRS measurements and DFT calculations. The systems differ in the relative position of the donor and acceptor substituents with respect to the axis formed by the nitrogen atoms of the central pyrazine ring. Although the magnitude of the second harmonic signal is similar, HRS measurements revealed that the anisotropy of the NLO response strongly differs in the two chromophore series, the one of the 2,3-isomers being strikingly dipolar, while the one of the 2,6-isomers is mostly octupolar. The experimental observations are well supported by DFT calculations. In particular, the sum-over-states approach allows us to rationalize the different NLO anisotropies observed in the two isomer series through a detailed analysis of the symmetry of the low-lying excited states.

Solvatochromic and Aggregation-Induced Emission Active Nitrophenyl-Substituted Pyrrolidinone-Fused-1,2-Azaborine with a Pre-Twisted Molecular Geometry

Boron-nitrogen-containing heterocycles with extended conjugated π-systems such as polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines, hold the fascination of organic chemists due to their unique optoelectronic properties. However, the majority of polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines aggregate at high concentrations or in the solid-state, resulting in aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) of emission. This practical limitation poses significant challenges for polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines' use in many applications. Additionally, only a few solvatochromic polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines have been reported and they all display minimal solvatochromism. Therefore, the scope of available polycyclic 1,2-azaborines needs to be expanded to include those displaying fluorescence at high concentration and in the solid-state as well as those that exhibit significant changes in emission intensity in various solvents due to different polarities. To address the ACQ issue, we evaluate the effect of a pre-twisted molecular geometry on the optoelectronic properties of polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines. Specifically, three phenyl-substituted pyrrolidinone-fused 1,2-azaborines (PFAs) with similar structures and functionalized with diverse electronic moieties (-H, -NO2, -CN, referred to as PFA 1, 2, and 3, respectively) were experimentally and computationally studied. Interestingly, PFA 2 displays two distinct emission properties: 1) solvatochromism, in which its emission and quantum yields are tunable with respect to solvent polarity, and 2) fluorescence that can be completely "turned off" and "turned on" via aggregation-induced emission (AIE). This report provides the first example of a polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborine that displays both AIE and solvatochromism properties in a single BN-substituted backbone. According to time-dependent density function theory (TD-DFT) calculations, the fluorescence properties of PFA 2 can be explained by the presence of a low-lying n-π* charge transfer state inaccessible to PFA 1 or PFA 3. These findings will help in the design of future polycyclic aromatic 1,2-azaborines that are solvatochromic and AIE-active as well as in understanding how molecular geometry affects these compounds' optoelectronic properties.

Azatriseptanes: Strained Framework Analogs of [7,7,7]Circulenes

The synthesis and characterization of heptagon-embedded polycyclic aromatic compounds are essential for understanding the effect of negative curvature on carbon allotropes such as fullerenes and graphenes that have applications in functional organic materials. However, owing to the synthetic difficulties in functionalizing and embedding seven-membered rings, these strain-challenged structures are relatively unexplored. We report here the synthesis, characterization, and properties of a triarylamine core bridged with ethano chains at the 2,2'-positions. In doing so, we provide access to the first heterocycle containing three fused heptagon rings with a nitrogen at its core (BATA-NHAc). X-ray crystallographic analysis and DFT calculations revealed a remarkably strained structure wherein two of the bridged aryl units approach coplanarity, while the third ring is twisted out of plane at 70°. UV-vis and emission spectroscopies identify red-shifted absorption and concentration-dependent emission profiles, respectively, as a result of the unique conformation and self-assembly properties of BATA-NHAc. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry shows a decrease in the oxidation potential for BATA-NHAc in comparison to the non-bridged analog. This study opens new avenues in understanding the structure-property relationships of curved π-aromatics and the construction of π-frameworks of increasing complexity.

Long-Wavelength Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells: Materials and Device Engineering

Long-wavelength light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are potential deep-red and near infrared light sources with solution-processable simple device architecture, low-voltage operation, and compatibility with inert metal electrodes. Many scientific efforts have been made to material design and device engineering of the long-wavelength LECs over the past two decades. The materials designed the for long-wavelength LECs cover ionic transition metal complexes, small molecules, conjugated polymers, and perovskites. On the other hand, device engineering techniques, including spectral modification by adjusting microcavity effect, light outcoupling enhancement, energy down-conversion from color conversion layers, and adjusting intermolecular interactions, are also helpful in improving the device performance of long-wavelength LECs. In this review, recent advances in the long-wavelength LECs are reviewed from the viewpoints of materials and device engineering. Finally, discussions on conclusion and outlook indicate possible directions for future developments of the long-wavelength LECs. This review would like to pave the way for the researchers to design materials and device engineering techniques for the long-wavelength LECs in the applications of displays, bio-imaging, telecommunication, and night-vision displays.

A double co-sensitization strategy using heteroleptic transition metal ferrocenyl dithiocarbamate phenanthrolene-dione for enhancing the performance of N719-based DSSCs

Three new heteroleptic dithiocarbamate complexes with formula [M(Phen-dione)(Fcdtc)]PF₆ (where M = Ni(ii) Ni-Fc, Cu(ii) Cu-Fc) and [Co(Phen-dione)(Fcdtc)₂]PF₆ (Co-Fc) (Fcdtc = N-ethanol-N-methylferrocene dithiocarbamate and Phen-dione = 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione; PF₆ ^- = hexafluorophosphate) were synthesized and characterized using microanalysis, FTIR, electronic absorption spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The solution state electronic absorption spectroscopy for all three complexes displayed a band at ∼430 nm corresponding to the ferrocene unit and another low-intensity band in the visible region arising because of the d-d transitions. These newly synthesized complexes were used as co-sensitizers for the state-of-the-art di-tetrabutylammonium cis-bis(isothiocyanato)bis(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylato)ruthenium(ii) (N719) dye in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Among the three co-sensitizers/co-adsorbent-based DSSC set-ups, the assembly fabricated using Co-Fc/N719 displayed good photovoltaic performance with 5.31% efficiency (η) while a new triple component strategy inculcating N719, Co-Fc and Cu-Fc dyes offered the best photovoltaic performance with 6.05% efficiency (η) with incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 63%. This indicated an upliftment of the DSSC performance by ∼38% in comparison to the set-up constructed by employing only N719 dye (η = 4.39%) under similar experimental conditions.

Synthesis, photophysical and nonlinear optical properties of push-pull tetrazoles

A 2,5-disubstituted tetrazole with p-nitrophenyl and 3-pyridyl units as acceptors (1a), and three push–pull tetrazoles with p-nitrophenyl as an acceptor and phenyl (1b), 2-(dibenzo[b,d]furan-4-yl) (1c), and 4-(N,N-diphenylamino)phenyl (1d) as donor groups, were synthesized by copper-catalyzed aerobic C–N coupling of p-nitrophenyl tetrazole with appropriately substituted aryl boronic acids. The absorption and emission spectra of 1a–c showed minimal dependence on the polarity of the solvent; however, in the case of 1d a blue shift was noted in the longest absorption band (λ₁) as the polarity increased. The fluorescence intensity of the title compounds was found to be solvent-dependent; however, no apparent correlation to solvent polarity could be established. The absorption and emission characteristics of 1a–d were also influenced by the nature of the substituent as 1d, bearing a strong electron donating 4-(N,N-diphenylamino)phenyl group, displayed a significant red shifted absorption (λ₁) as well as emission (λ_em) bands compared to other compounds. Time dependent density functional calculations (CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G**) revealed that the longest wavelength band (λ₁) is associated with an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from HOMO/HOMO-1/HOMO-2 → LUMO/LUMO+1 in these molecules. The first hyperpolarizability values, β_HRS, of 1a–d were measured using the solution-based hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique using a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser and the highest NLO activity was measured for 1d with the greatest push–pull characteristics. A strong correlation was observed between the calculated hyperpolarizability (β_tot) and experimentally measured values (β_HRS).

A 2,5-disubstituted tetrazole with a p-nitrophenyl unit as an acceptor and a 4-(N,N-diphenylamino) phenyl group as a donor exhibits strong push–pull characteristics and displays high NLO activity.

DFT, ADMET and Molecular Docking Investigations for the Antimicrobial Activity of 6,6'-Diamino-1,1',3,3'-tetramethyl-5,5'-(4-chlorobenzylidene)bis[pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione]

Heterocyclic compounds, including pyrimidine derivatives, exhibit a broad variety of biological and pharmacological activities. In this paper, a previously synthesized novel pyrimidine molecule is proposed, and its pharmaceutical properties are investigated. Computational techniques such as the density functional theory, ADMET evaluation, and molecular docking were applied to elucidate the chemical nature, drug likeness and antibacterial function of molecule. The viewpoint of quantum chemical computations revealed that the molecule was relatively stable and has a high electrophilic nature. The contour maps of HOMO-LUMO and molecular electrostatic potential were analyzed to illustrate the charge density distributions that could be associated with the biological activity. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis revealed details about the interaction between donor and acceptor within the bond. Drug likeness and ADMET analysis showed that the molecule possesses the agents of safety and the effective combination therapy as pharmaceutical drug. The antimicrobial activity was investigated using molecular docking. The investigated molecule demonstrated a high affinity for binding within the active sites of antibacterial and antimalarial proteins. The high affinity of the antibacterial protein was proved by its low binding energy (-7.97 kcal/mol) and a low inhibition constant value (1.43 µM). The formation of four conventional hydrogen bonds in ligand-protein interactions confirmed the high stability of the resulting complexes. When compared to known standard drugs, the studied molecule displayed a remarkable antimalarial activity, as indicated by higher binding affinity (B.E. -5.86 kcal/mol & Ki = 50.23 M). The pre-selected molecule could be presented as a promising drug candidate for the development of novel antimicrobial agents.

Turning the Light on Phenols: New Opportunities in Organic Synthesis

Phenols ( I ) are extremely relevant chemical functionalities in natural, synthetic and industrial chemistry. Their corresponding electron-rich anions, namely phenolates ( I ), are characterized by interesting physicochemical properties that can be drastically altered upon light excitation. Specifically, phenolates ( I ) become strong reducing agents in the excited state and are able to generate reactive radicals from suitable precursors via single-electron transfer processes. Thus, these species can photochemically trigger strategic bond-forming reactions, including their direct aromatic C-H functionalization. Moreover, substituted phenolate anions can act as photocatalysts to enable synthetically useful organic transformations. An alternative mechanistic manifold is represented by the ability of phenolate derivatives I to form ground state electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes with electron-poor radical sources. These complementary scenarios have paved the way for the development of a wide range of relevant organic reactions. In this Minireview, we present the main examples of this research field, and give insight on emerging trends in phenols photocatalysis towards richer organic synthesis.

DFT and TD-DFT study on quadratic NLO response and optoelectronic activity in novel Y-shaped imidazole-based push-pull chromophores

A theoretical analysis of a series of imidazole-based Y-shaped chromophores, D1-D8, is performed in order to investigate their non(linear) optical, fluorescence, and charge-transport properties. The calculations have been carried out employing DFT and TD-DFT methods at CAM-B3LYP and M06-2X levels of theory. FMO analysis reveals that in ground state, the highest occupied molecular orbital is localized on the 4,5-dimethylanilino donor moiety and imidazole core while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital spreads on π-linker and nitro acceptor moieties. Vertical absorption and fluorescence transitions are characterized as intramolecular charge transfer and maximum absorption and fluorescence wavelengths show that by changing the π-bridge to the imidazole C2, we can tune fluorescence color from cyan to orange. Calculated (hyper)polarizabilities show that elongation of π-linker by polarizable subunits, such as double bonds or heteroaromatic rings, increases significantly the nonlinear response and shifts the charge-transfer band bathochromically. Calculated reorganization energies indicate that the studied compounds are hole-transporting materials rather than electron-transporters. Interestingly, D7 and D8, with higher hyperpolarizabilities, are predicted to be potent candidates for NLO-devices while D5 and D8 molecules are expected to be promising candidates for luminescent materials and good hole-transport materials for organic light-emitting diodes.

Loop-mediated fluorescent probes for selective discrimination of parallel and antiparallel G-Quadruplexes

Herein we report simple pyridinium (1-3) and quinolinium (4) salts for the selective recognition of G-quadruplexes (G4s). Among them, the probe 1, interestingly, selectively discriminated parallel (c-KIT-1, c-KIT-2, c-MYC) G4s from anti-parallel/hybrid (22AG, HRAS-1, BOM-17, TBA) G4s at pH 7.2, through a switch on response in the far-red window. Significant changes in the absorption (broad 575 nm → sharp 505 nm) and emission of probe 1 at 620 nm, attributed to selective interaction with parallel G4s, resulted in complete disaggregation-induced monomer emission. Symmetrical push/pull molecular confinements across the styryl units in probe 1 enhanced the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) by restricting the free rotation of CC units in the presence of sterically less hindered and highly accessible G4 surface/bottom tetrads in the parallel G4s, which is relatively lower extent in antiparallel/hybrid G4s. We confirm that the disaggregation of probe 1 was very effective in the presence of parallel G4-forming ODNs, due to the presence of highly available free surface area, resulting in additional π-stacking interactions. The selective sensing capabilities of probe 1 were analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, molecular dynamics (MD)-based simulation studies, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. This study should afford insights for the future design of selective compounds targeting parallel G4s.

Band Gap Engineering in Solvochromic 2D Covalent Organic Framework Photocatalysts for Visible Light-Driven Enhanced Solar Fuel Production from Carbon Dioxide

Solar light-driven fuel production from carbon dioxide using organic photocatalysts is a promising technique for sustainable energy sources. Band gap engineering in sustainable organic photocatalysts for improving efficiency and fulfilling the requirements is highly anticipated. Here, we present a new strategy to engineer the band gap in covalent organic framework (COF) photocatalysts by varying the push-pull electronic effect. To implement this strategy, we have designed and synthesized four different COFs using a tripodal amine 4,4',4″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris(([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-amine)) [Ttba] with 1,3,5-triformylbenzene (COF-1), 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (COF-2), 2,4,6-triformylphenol (COF-3), and 2,4,6-triformylresorcinol (COF-4). On varying the number of hydroxyl units in the aldehyde precursor, the resulting COFs allow the fine-tuning of their band gap and band edge positions and result in different morphologies with varying surface areas. The enhanced optical properties of COF-3 and COF-4 with very suitable band gaps of 2.02 and 1.95 eV, respectively, enable them to demonstrate a high-efficiency photobiocatalytic system for NADH photoregeneration and enhanced visible light-driven formic acid production at a rate of 226.3 μmol g^-1 in 90 min. The triazine core enables efficient charge separation, while the hydroxyl groups induce an electronic push-pull effect, regulating their photocatalytic efficiency. The results demonstrated the morphology-guided enhanced surface area and dual keto-enol tautomerism-induced push-pull effect in asymmetrical charge distribution as key features in the fine-tuning of the photocatalysts.

Quantum chemistry-machine learning approach for predicting and elucidating molecular hyperpolarizability: Application to [2.2]paracyclophane-containing push-pull polymers

Nonlinear optical properties of organic chromophores are of great interest in diverse photonic and optoelectronic applications. To elucidate general trends in the behaviors of molecules, large amounts of data are required. Therefore, both an accurate and a rapid computational approach can significantly promote the theoretical design of molecules. In this work, we combined quantum chemistry and machine learning (ML) to study the first hyperpolarizability (β) in [2.2]paracyclophane-containing push-pull compounds with various terminal donor/acceptor pairs and molecular lengths. To generate reference β values for ML, the ab initio elongation finite-field method was used, allowing us to treat long polymer chains with linear scale efficiency and high computational accuracy. A neural network (NN) model was built for β prediction, and the relevant molecular descriptors were selected using a genetic algorithm. The established NN model accurately reproduced the β values (R² > 0.99) of long molecules based on the input quantum chemical properties (dipole moment, frontier molecular orbitals, etc.) of only the shortest systems and additional information about the actual system length. To obtain general trends in molecular descriptor-target property relationships learned by the NN, three approaches for explaining the ML decisions (i.e., partial dependence, accumulated local effects, and permutation feature importance) were used. The effect of donor/acceptor alternation on β in the studied systems was examined. The asymmetric extension of molecular regions end-capped with donors and acceptors produced unequal β responses. The results revealed how the electronic properties originating from the nature of substituents on the microscale controlled the magnitude of β according to the NN approximation. The applied approach facilitates the conceptual discoveries in chemistry by using ML to both (i) efficiently generate data and (ii) provide a source of information about causal correlations among system properties.

Twisted One-Dimensional Charge Transfer and Related Y-Shaped Chromophores with a 4H-Pyranylidene Donor: Synthesis and Optical Properties

Three series of push–pull derivatives bearing 4H-pyranylidene as electron donor group and a variety of acceptors were designed. On one hand, one-dimensional chromophores with a thiophene ring (series 1H) or 5-dimethylaminothiophene moiety (series 1N) as an auxiliary donor, non-coplanar with the π-conjugated system, were synthesized. On the other hand, related two-dimensional (2D) Y-shaped chromophores (series 2) were also prepared to compare how the diverse architectures affect the electrochemical, linear, and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The presence of the 5-dimethylaminothiophene moiety in the exocyclic C=C bond of the pyranylidene unit gives rise to oxidation potentials rarely low, and the protonation (with an excess of trifluoroacetic acid) of its derivatives results in the apparition of a new blue-shifted band in the UV–visible spectra. The analysis of the properties of derivatives with and without the additional thiophene ring shows that this auxiliary donor leads to a higher NLO response, accompanied by an enhanced transparency. Y-shaped chromophores of series 2 present a blue-shifted absorption, higher molar extinction coefficients, and higher E_ox values compared to their linear twisted counterparts. As concerns NLO properties, 2D Y-shaped architecture gives rise to somewhat lower μβ values (except for thiobarbiturate derivatives).

Ferrocene donor linked to pyridine/pyridinium acceptor via a systematically enlarged π-linker

Nine chromophores with ferrocene donor and pyridine/pyridinium acceptors have been prepared and further investigated. The performed X-ray analysis showed partially polarized and geometrically oblate pyridine unit. An extension of the π-system and N-quaternization were revealed as suitable tools for exclusive manipulation of the LUMO with the almost steady HOMO. Whereas the electrochemical HOMO–LUMO gap can be tuned from 3.01 to 1.49 eV, the high- and low-energy absorption bands were found within the range of 280–402/456–547 nm. The pyridinium chromophores showed distinct negative solvatochromism. A thorough DFT analysis has been performed; it turned out that ferrocene donor is capable of two principal D–A interactions, whose employment depends on the appended electron-withdrawing moiety.

Nine chromophores with ferrocene donor and pyridine/pyridinium acceptors have been prepared and further investigated.

ThDione: A Powerful Electron-Withdrawing Moiety for Push-Pull Molecules

A series of new push-pull chromophores based on a combined cyclopenta[c]thiophene-4,6-dione (ThDione) acceptor, N,N-dimethylaniline, N-piperidinylthiophene or ferrocene donors, and ethylene or buta-1,3-dienylene π-linkers has been designed and synthesized. Utilizing one or two ThDione acceptors afforded linear or branched push-pull molecules. Experimental and theoretical study of their fundamental properties revealed thermal robustness up to 260 °C, a electrochemical/optical HOMO-LUMO gap that is tunable within the range of 1.47-2.19/1.99-2.39 eV, and thorough elucidation of structure-property relationships. Compared to currently available portfolio of heterocyclic electron-withdrawing units, ThDione proved to be a powerful and versatile acceptor unit. It imparts significant intramolecular charge transfer and polarizes the π-system, which results in enhanced (non)linear optical response.

Linear and Star-Shaped Extended Di- and Tristyrylbenzenes: Synthesis, Characterization and Optical Response to Acid and Metal Ions

Two linear 1,4-distyrylbenzenes and five star-shaped 1,3,5-tristyrylbenzene derivatives (L2a and L2b , Y0 -Y3 and YNBu ) were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. The photophysical properties, optical response to acid and metal ions were investigated. Upon backbone extension of linear distyrylbenzenes or the introduction of dibutylanilines, the electronic spectra are redshifted. Incorporation of electron-deficient pyridyl units does not significantly affect the optical properties. Variation of the number of pyridine rings and substitution pattern tune the fluorescence response to acids and metal ions. The novel arenes discriminate Al3+ , Mn2+ , Fe3+ , Fe2+ , Cd2+ , Ag+ and Hg2+ .

NLO-active Y-shaped ferrocene conjugated imidazole chromophores as precursors for SHG polymeric films

New Y-shaped ferrocene conjugated imidazole chromophores were prepared and fully characterized. The Y-shaped structure was confirmed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The chromophores show interesting second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in solution, as determined by the Electric-Field Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique. Remarkably, the trifluoro substituted compound 3 is characterized by a high μβEFISH value and has good potential as a molecular building block for composite films with Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) properties. For all compounds, the dipole moments and frontier orbital energies were calculated by the Density Functional Theoretical method.

Molecular Wires with Controllable π-Delocalization Incorporating Redox-Triggered π-Conjugated Switching Units

A perfluorobiphenyl-2,2'-diyl dication and its corresponding dihydrophenanthrene-type electron donor are interconvertible upon two-electron transfer. Redox-triggered C-C bond-formation/cleavage caused a drastic change in the torsion angle of the biphenyl unit. Thus, π-delocalization ON/OFF switching was observed as a change in the UV absorption upon electrolysis of the linearly extended analogue with two phenylethynyl groups. A further extended π-system with a molecular length of ca. 3.5 nm, which has two switching units, was synthesized. Spectroelectrograms as well as voltammetric analyses showed that the two units act nearly simultaneously because of the very small inter-unit electrostatic repulsion in the tetracationic state. Thus, the present pair is a promising candidate as a switching unit for "molecular wires" with controllable π-delocalization, in which a higher ON/OFF ratio of delocalization could be realized by incorporating multiple switching units.

Triarylalkenes from the site-selective reductive cross-coupling of benzophenones and aldehydes

PhP(Li)TMS converts benzophenones to phosphaalkenes which upon activation under oxidizing, basic conditions react with aromatic aldehydes under the formation of triarylalkenes. The one-pot reaction omits transition metals, proceeds at room temperature and precludes the formation of any homo-coupling products. Systematic substrate variations reveal reactivity patterns that are useful for the identification of ketone/aldehyde combinations that can be coupled in yields up to 80%.

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds: Simple in Structure, Complex in Application

Quaternary ammonium compounds, referred to as QACs, are cationic substances with a structure on the edge of organic and inorganic chemistry and unique physicochemical properties. The purpose of the present work is to introduce QACs and their wide application potential. Fundamental properties, methods of preparation, and utilization in organic synthesis are reviewed. Modern applications and the use of QACs as reactive substrates, reagents, phase-transfer catalysts, ionic liquids, electrolytes, frameworks, surfactants, herbicides, and antimicrobials are further covered. A brief discussion of the health and environmental impact of QACs is also provided. The emphasis is largely on tetraalkylammonium compounds bearing linear alkyl chains.

Structural elaboration of dicyanopyrazine: towards push–pull molecules with tailored photoredox activity

As an extension of the successful dicyanopyrazine photoredox catalysts, a series of X-shaped push–pull molecules with a systematically altered structure were designed and facilely synthesized; their structure–property relationship was elucidated in detail via experimental as well as theoretical calculations. Dicyanopyrazines are proven to be powerful photoredox catalysts with a push–pull arrangement that allows facile property tuning by interchanging a particular part of the D–π–A system. Changing the mutual position of the cyano acceptors and the methoxy, methylthio and thienyl donors as well as modifying the linker allowed wide tuning of the fundamental properties of the catalysts. Contrary to the currently available organic photoredox catalysts, we provided a series of catalysts based on a pyrazine heterocyclic scaffold with easy synthesis and further modification, diverse photoredox characteristics and wide application potential across modern photoredox transformations. The photoredox catalytic activities of the target catalysts were examined in a benchmark cross-dehydrogenative coupling and novel and challenging annulation reactions.

X-shaped push–pull molecules based on dicyanopyrazine were designed, synthesized and experimentally/theoretically investigated. They proved to be tunable photoredox catalysts in selected chemical transformations.

Solvatochromism and pH effect on the emission of a triphenylimidazole-phenylacrylonitrile derivative: experimental and DFT studies

In this work, a study of the photophysical properties in different solvents and at different pH values of a luminogenic compound with a donor–π–acceptor (D–π–A) structure was carried out. The compound (Z)-3-(4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-2-phenylacrylonitrile (2) was synthesized and characterized by SCXRD, FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, EIMS, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence. The SCXRD characterization reveals a monoclinic system, P2₁/c, with Z = 4 and an imidazole core having hydrogen bonding with respect to water molecules present in the asymmetric unit. It leads to a strong π–π-interaction in the solid state. The fluorescence λ_max emission of the powder and thin film was observed at 563 nm and 540 nm respectively. Several degrees of positive solvatochromic fluorescence were observed due to different molecular conformations in various solvents. When the pH of the compound was changed with HCl or NaOH, a shift in the wavelength of emission was observed in a reversible manner. At pH 2, the λ_max of emission was at 541 nm whereas at pH 14 there were two emissions at 561 nm and 671 nm. Due to their good emission in the solid state, compound 2 was tested as an emitting layer in OLEDs; the devices showed an acceptable performance with a luminance average of 450 cd m⁻². The band gap was analyzed by optical absorption, cyclic voltammetry measurement and DFT calculations.

The optical properties of an imidazole derivative were studied at various pH values and in solvents and the solid-state through experimental and DFT calculation.

Push-Pull N,N-Diphenylhydrazones Bearing Bithiophene or Thienothiophene Spacers as Nonlinear Optical Second Harmonic Generators and as Photosensitizers for Nanocrystalline TiO2 Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

A series of push-pull heterocyclic N,N-diphenylhydrazones were prepared to study the effect of structural modifications (different π-spacers and electron-withdrawing groups) on the optical (linear and nonlinear) and electronic properties of the molecules. The photovoltaic response of dye-sensitized solar cells assembled using nanocrystalline titania photosensitized with the synthesized dyes was also studied. These heterocyclic push-pull conjugated dyes involve N,N-diphenylhydrazones as electron donors linked to bithiophene or thieno[3,2-b]thiophene spacers and were functionalized with carboxylic acid, cyanoacetic acid, or dicyanovinyl acceptor groups. A combination of Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, Vilsmeier formylation, and condensation reactions was used to synthesize the intermediates and final products. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent-DFT calculations were used to obtain information on conformation, electronic structure, and electron distribution, both for the free dyes and those adsorbed on TiO₂. The results of this multidisciplinary study indicate that dyes 5b and 6b have the strongest second-order nonlinear optical response with hyperpolarizability values in the range of β = 2330 × 10^-30 to 2750 × 10^-30 esu, whereas photovoltaic power conversion efficiencies reach values in the range of 0.7-3.0% for dyes 5a-b and 7c and were enhanced by coadsorbing deoxycholic acid (0.8-5.1%).

Reductive coupling of two aldehydes to unsymmetrical E-alkenes via phosphaalkene and phosphinate intermediates

Stilbenes with push-pull electronics are directly accessible from an electron-rich and an electron-deficient benzaldehyde in a novel reductive aldehyde cross-coupling reaction. The one-pot procedure is enabled by the oxidation of a transient phosphinite to the corresponding phosphinate which exhibits sufficient reactivity towards deactivated aldehydes.
