Advances and future perspectives of water defluoridation by adsorption technology: A review

Fluoride contamination in water sources poses a significant challenge to human health and the environment. In recent years, adsorption technology has emerged as a promising approach for water defluoridation due to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This review article comprehensively explores the advances in water defluoridation through adsorption processes. Various adsorbents, including natural and synthetic materials, have been investigated for their efficacy in removing fluoride ions from water. The mechanisms underlying adsorption interactions are elucidated, shedding light on the factors influencing defluoridation efficiency. Influence of the surface modification of granular-activated carbon synthesized from macauba on heavy metal sorption

Adsorption on activated carbon is a promising technique for the treatment of low-concentration heavy metal pollutants in water with high efficiency and simple operation. However, commercial-activated carbon is often associated with high costs. Therefore, much attention has been given to activated carbon derived from low-cost agricultural and residual biomass. In this work, adsorption of Zn, Cd, and Pb ions in aqueous solutions was conducted using granular-activated carbon obtained from macauba palm, biomass waste of biofuel production, after surface modification using different methods. The adsorbents were obtained in granular form which facilitates all steps of the use, recovery, and reuse of the material, differently from the powdered-activated carbon normally used. The materials were characterized by using XPS, elemental analysis, N₂ sorption (BET method), and zeta potential measurements. Such techniques allowed observation of the functionalization of the carbon surface. The materials presented high adsorption capacities when compared to other works in the literature, with a capacity of approximately 7.69, 8.42, and 1.63 mmol g^-1 for Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺, respectively. In addition, the materials showed a high capacity to be reused, removing 75% of Pb and 99% of both Cd and Zn after 4 cycles.

Adsorptive removal of fluoride using ionic liquid-functionalized chitosan - Equilibrium and mechanism studies

In this study, novel biosorbents, based on chitosan and imidazolium ionic liquid, were prepared for the removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM-EDS and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption. To investigate the adsorption mechanism and behavior of chitosan adsorbents, batch experiments were conducted under different adsorbent dosages (2, 4, 10 g/L), pH (4, 7, 9) and initial concentration (0.5-25.0 mg/L). The influence of the method of synthesis of ionic liquid on the adsorption performance were also studied. Experimental data were evaluated by Freundlich, Langmuir and Sips models. The introduction of ionic liquid significantly improved the uptake of fluoride compared to pure chitosan. The adsorption was influenced by the experimental conditions, as well as the method of ionic liquid synthesis. The highest fluoride removal was observed at pH 4 and found to decrease with increasing pH. The removal efficiency and adsorption capacity values indicated that the dose of 4 g/L was the optimum adsorbent dosage. The equilibrium data fitted best with the Sips isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 8.068 mg/g for modified chitosan beads. The mechanism of fluoride adsorption onto ionic liquid-modified chitosan involves electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and ion pair interaction.

Evaluation of fluoride adsorption in solution by synthetic Al2 O3 /CeO2 : A fixed-bed column study

A highly efficient fluoride adsorbent Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ was synthesized in this work and used it to fluoride removal in the fixed-bed adsorption through changing the different experimental conditions (influent F^- concentration, flow velocity, and bed heights). The adsorption capacity was 9.72 mg/g. In addition, the Adams-Bohart and Thomas models were used to fit and evaluate the column breakthrough curve of fluoride removal process by Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ , and the correlation coefficients (R² ) of the Thomas model were close to 1 under all experimental conditions. The structure of Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ and the adsorption mechanism were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), N₂ adsorption and desorption isotherm, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, the adsorption of fluoride (F^- ) was mainly through metal binding (MF) and hydroxyl binding (AlOH⋯F) on the surface of the Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ . Furthermore, the regeneration and coexisting anions studies of Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ were carried out, and the efficiency of adsorption was still above 70% after five cycles. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Removal of fluoride was studied by fixed-bed experiment, and the adsorption capacity of composite Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ was 9.72 mg/g. The metal complex played important role in fluoride removal and reusability makes a long-term application for fluoride adsorption. Fluoride wastewater is pumped to the fixed-bed column, and fluoride ions are absorbed by Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ through fluoride metal complex and aluminum hydrofluoride.

Graphene oxide-iron modified clinoptilolite based composites for adsorption of arsenate and optimization using response surface methodology

In this study, graphene oxide and composites of graphene oxide-iron modified clinoptilolite were synthesized and used for arsenate removal from aqueous solution. All adsorbents were characterized using X-ray diffraction and specific surface area analysis. The specific surface areas of composites were found to be less than the iron modified clinoptilolite. The time required to reach equilibrium was determined as 3 hours for all adsorbents. The Box-Behnken statistical experiment design method was used to determine the effects of initial arsenate concentration, pH and the amount of adsorbent on the percent arsenate removal. Graphene oxide was not as effective as composites for arsenate adsorption from water. Arsenate adsorption on composites was showed good compatibility with the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum arsenate uptake was realized at pH 4 for graphene oxide and at pH 7 for composites. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained at the optimum points determined by using the Box-Behnken design method were calculated as 39.49, 117.98 and 124.64 µg.g^-1 for graphene oxide and composites, respectively.
