Abstract
The behavior of the structural orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transition of Pr2-xNdxNiO4+δ, a candidate material for solid oxide fuel cells and oxygen permeation membranes, was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry (TG), under controlled oxygen partial pressures, P(O2). The structural phase transition temperature, TP, of Pr2-xNdxNiO4+δ increased with increasing Nd content, x, or increasing P(O2). The phase transitions of all compositions involved discrete variations in the oxygen content, Δδ, which were observed in the TG curves under various P(O2) values. Δδ of Pr2-xNdxNiO4+δ with 0.5 ≤x≤ 1.5 were between those of Nd2NiO4+δ and Pr2NiO4+δ, regardless of P(O2), and were slightly increased with decreasing P(O2). It was proposed that the effect of the valence change of the Pr ion on Δδ was decreased with increasing Nd content. The standard enthalpy change, ΔH°, and entropy change, ΔS°, of the phase transition were estimated from the Ellingham diagrams and van't Hoff plots, which were prepared from the relationship between P(O2) and TP using an ideal solution model. ΔS° was decreased with increasing Nd content for the specimens with 0.0 ≤x≤ 1.5. The ΔH° of Pr2-xNdxNiO4+δ with 0.0 ≤x≤ 1.5 was almost constant for all Nd contents. The increase in the phase transition temperature of Pr2-xNdxNiO4+δ with increasing x from 0.0 to 1.5 was successfully explained using the calculated values of ΔH° and ΔS°.

Abstract
Abstract
Crystalline orthorhombic rare earth carbonate hydroxides Ln[CO3][OH] (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) were synthesised as phase pure powders via a simple hydrothermal reaction. CO2 from air acted as natural carbonate source and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide was added as templating agent to an aqueous rare earth nitrate solution. Single-crystal X-ray structure determination was performed on La[CO3][OH] (Pnma, a=7.4106(5), b=5.0502(3), c=8.5901(6) Å, 563 independent reflections, 38 refined parameters, wR2=0.037), Pr[CO3][OH] (Pnma, a=7.2755(4), b=4.9918(3), c=8.5207(5) Å, 744 independent reflections, 38 refined parameters, wR2=0.04), Eu[CO3][OH] (Pnma, a=7.1040(4), b=4.8940(3), c=8.4577(5) Å, 1649 independent reflections, 38 refined parameters, wR2=0.05) and Gd[CO3][OH] (Pnma, a=7.069(7), b=4.874(5), c=8.464(9) Å, 431 independent reflections, 38 refined parameters, wR2=0.051). These findings are supported by powder XRD, infrared spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy and, for Pr[CO3][OH] and Eu[CO3][OH], by measurements of the non-linear optical properties. Thermal analysis could demonstrate the possible use of the Ln[CO3][OH] phases as precursors for rare earth carbonate dioxides Ln
2[CO3]O2 and rare earth oxides Ln
2O3. The decomposition products inherit the precursor’s morphology. The lattice parameters of Pr2[CO3]O2 were refined from high-temperature powder XRD data.

On the dimorphism of Pr6Mo10O39. ZEITSCHRIFT FUR NATURFORSCHUNG SECTION B-A JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL SCIENCES 2017. Abstract
Abstract
Attempts to synthesize Pr4Mo7O27 using Pr, Pr6O11 and MoO3 in a molar ratio of 8:6:77 led to a main product of scheelite-type Pr0.667[MoO4] and few single crystals of the triclinic A-type Pr6Mo10O39. The latter crystallizes in space group P1̅ (a=945.25(1), b=1058.49(2), c=1815.16(3) pm; α=104.149(1), β=95.220(1), γ=102.617(1)°, Z=2). Its crystal structure comprises six crystallographically independent Pr3+ cations, eight tetrahedral [MoO4]2− units, and one [Mo2O7]2− entity. The cations display coordination numbers of seven (1×) and eight (5×), while the [MoO4]2− tetrahedra are surrounded by five Pr3+ cations each. The [Mo2O7]2− anions exhibit a coordination environment of seven Pr3+ cations. The attempt to synthesize PrF[MoO4] using PrOF (from in situ thermal decomposition of PrF[CO3]) as reagent did not lead to the desired product but to monoclinic B-type Pr6Mo10O39. This slightly less dense modification compared to its triclinic analogue crystallizes in space group C2/c (a=1247.93(3), b=1989.68(6), c=1392.52 (4) pm, β=100.505(2)°, Z=4) with three crystallographically independent Pr3+ cations, four [MoO4]2− tetrahedra, and again one [Mo2O7]2− unit in the crystal structure. Thus, both Pr6Mo10O39 modifications are better described with the structured formula Pr6[MoO4]8[Mo2O7]. The coordination numbers around the Pr3+ cations are seven (1×) and eight (2×) while all four [MoO4]2− anions are again surrounded by five Pr3+ cations each. Six of the latter represent the coordination environment around the [Mo2O7]2− entities. Besides the thorough comparison of the crystal structures single crystal Raman spectra were recorded for both Pr6Mo10O39 phases.
