Disiloxanediolates and Metallasilsesquioxanes of the Rare Earth Elements

A trinuclear metallasilsesquioxane of uranium(III)

The silsesquioxane ligand (iBu)7Si7O9(OH)3 (iBuPOSSH3) is revealed as an attractive system for the assembly of robust polynuclear complexes of uranium(III) and allowed the isolation of the first example of a trinuclear U(III) complex ([U3(iBuPOSS)3]) that exhibits magnetic communication and promotes dinitrogen reduction in the presence of reducing agent.

Synthesis of Novel Luminescent Double-Decker Silsesquioxanes Based on Partially Condensed TetraSilanolPhenyl POSS and Tb3+/Eu3+ Lanthanide Ions

In this study, novel lanthanide-containing double-decker polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) were prepared by combining the partially condensed TetraSilanolPhenyl POSS with terbium (Tb3+) and europium (Eu3+) ions. This open-cage POSS possesses four diametrically opposite silanol groups that are able to coordinate, under mild conditions, different luminescent ions through a simple corner-capping method. The two metal-containing POSS functionalized with Tb3+ and with an equimolar combination of Tb3+ and Eu3+ show a completely condensed structure with different luminescent properties. Their emission features depend on the chemical nature of the metal ions incorporated in the framework. An improved stokes shift was detected in the bimetallic compound containing both the Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions, promoted by the occurrence of a Tb3+→Eu3+ energy transfer mechanism. These characteristics identify this metal-functionalized silica platform as a potential candidate for the development of novel luminescent devices.

Azido-Functionalized Aromatic Phosphonate Esters in RPOSS-Cage-Supported Lanthanide Ion (Ln = La, Nd, Dy, Er) Coordination

Within this work, a modified preparation of diethyl 4-azidobenzylphosphonate (L1) is presented and the family of 4- or 4'-azido-substituted aromatic phosphonate esters is increased by three new ligand platforms: diisopropyl 4-azidobenzylphosphonate (L2), diisopropyl ((4'-azido-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)methyl)phosphonate (L3), and diisopropyl 4-azido-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzylphosphonate (L4), which exhibit an anomalous splitting of the N₃ stretching vibrations. Subsequent coordination to the in situ generated ^RPOSS (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane)-cage-supported lanthanide precursors [(Ln{^RPOSS})₂(THF)_m] (P1-P6) (Ln = La, Nd, Dy, Er; R = iBu, Ph; m = 0, 1) yields complexes of the general formula [Ln{^RPOSS}(L1-L4)_n(S1)_x(THF)_m] (1-30) (n = 2, 3; x = 0, 1; m = 0-2) retaining the azide unit for future semiconductor surface immobilization. Because the latter compounds are mostly oils or viscous waxes, preliminary solution-state structure elucidations via DOSY-ECC-MW estimations have been carried out which are in accordance with ¹H NMR integral ratios as well as solid-state structures, where available. Moreover, the optical properties of the Nd, Dy, and Er derivatives of complexes 1-30 are examined in the visible and NIR spectral regions, where applicable.

Structure and small molecule activation reactivity of a metallasilsesquioxane of divalent ytterbium

The first metallasilsesquioxane of a divalent lanthanide was synthetized and structurally characterized. The dinuclear Yb(ii) complex effects the two electrons reduction of azobenzene, and the selective CO₂ reduction to CO and carbonate.

High-yield synthesis of a unique Mn(iii) siloxide complex through KMnO4 oxidation of a Mn(ii) precursor

A unique trivalent manganese siloxide complex, blue-violet Mn^IIILi₂Cl[(Ph₂SiO)₂O]₂(THF)₄·2THF (3) has been prepared by a straightforward two-step synthetic protocol. Lithiation of (Ph₂SiOH)₂O (1) followed by reaction with MnCl₂(THF)₂ gave the structurally remarkable Mn(ii) precursor Mn^IILi₄Cl₂[(Ph₂SiO)₂O]₂(THF)₅·2THF (2). Surprisingly, the final oxidation step could be achieved using KMnO₄ in THF to provide the Mn(iii) species 3 in high yield (91%). Both title compounds were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Rare Earth Doped Silica Nanoparticles via Thermolysis of a Single Source Metallasilsesquioxane Precursor

Rare earth metal doped silica nanoparticles have significant advantages over traditional organic dyes and quantum dots. Silsesquioxanes are promising precursors in the production of silica nanoparticles by thermolysis, due to their structural similarities with silica materials. This manuscript describes the production of a new Eu3+-based metallasilsesquioxane species and its use as a single source precursor in the thermolytic production of luminescent rare earth metal doped silica nanoparticles with characteristic emission in the visible region of the spectrum.

Synthesis and structural study of new metallasilsesquioxanes of potassium and uranium

Heterometallic europium disiloxanediolates: synthesis, structural diversity, and photoluminescence properties

This contribution presents a full account of a structurally diverse class of heterometallic europium disiloxanediolates. The synthetic protocol involves in situ metalation of (HO)SiPh2OSiPh2(OH) (1) with either (n)BuLi or KN(SiMe3)2 followed by treatment with EuCl3 in suitable solvents such as 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) or tetrahydrofuran (THF). Reaction of EuCl3 with 2 equiv of (LiO)SiPh2OSiPh2(OLi) in DME afforded the Eu(III) bis(disiloxanediolate) "ate" complex [{(Ph2SiO)2O}2{Li(DME)}3]EuCl2 (2), which upon attempted reduction with Zn gave the tris(disiloxanediolate) [{(Ph2SiO)2O}3{Li(DME)}3]Eu (3). Treatment of EuCl3 with (LiO)SiPh2OSiPh2(OLi) in a molar ratio of 1:2 yielded both the ate complex [{(Ph2SiO)2O}3Li{Li(THF)2}{Li(THF)}]EuCl·Li(THF)3 (4) and the LiCl-free europium(III) complex [{(Ph2SiO)2O}2{Li(THF)2}2]EuCl (5). Compound 5 was found to exhibit a brilliant red triboluminescence. When (KO)SiPh2OSiPh2(OK) was used as starting material in a 3:1 reaction with EuCl3, the Eu(III) tris(disiloxanediolate) [{(Ph2SiO)2O}3{K(DME)}3]Eu (6) was isolated. Attempted ligand transfer between 5 and (DAD(Dipp))2Ba(DME) (DAD(Dipp) = N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene) afforded the unique mixed-valent Eu(III)/Eu(II) disiloxanediolate cluster [(Ph2SiO)2O]6Eu(II)4Eu(III)2Li4O2Cl2 (7). All new complexes were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. Photoluminescence studies were carried out for complex 5 showing an excellent color quality, due to the strong (5)D0→(7)F2 transition, but a weak antenna effect.
