Indium Kα radiation from a MetalJet X-ray source: comparison of the Eiger2 CdTe and Photon III detectors

The MetalJet source makes available new Kα radiation wavelengths for use in X-ray diffraction experiments. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the application of indium Kα radiation in independent-atom model refinement, as well as approaches using aspherical atomic form factors. The results vary greatly depending on the detector employed, as the energy cut-off of the Eiger2 CdTe provides a solution to a unique energy contamination problem of the MetalJet In radiation, which the Photon III detector cannot provide.

Scandium–copper–indides deriving from the ZrNiAl and MnCu2Al type structures

Phase analytical studies in the Sc–Cu–In system led to samples of the solid solutions ScCu1–x–y In1+x and ScCu2–x In which were studied by X-ray powder diffraction. At room temperature the compounds ScCu1–x–y In1+x crystallize with the ZrNiAl type, space group P 6 ‾ $\overline{6}$ 2m. Exemplarily, the structure of ScCu0.76In1.17 was refined from single crystal X-ray diffractometer data, revealing strong anisotropic displacements for the scandium atoms and a mixed occupied Cu/In site. Superstructure formation is observed at low temperatures. The ScCu0.78In1.14 and ScCu0.76In1.16 structures were refined from diffraction data recorded at 90 K. Both compounds adopt the HfRhSn type, space group P 6 ‾ $\overline{6}$ 2c, a klassengleiche subgroup of index 2; doubling of the subcell c axis. The Cu/In filled trigonal Sc6 prisms are strongly distorted in the superstructure, resulting from pairwise dislocation of the Cu/In atoms from ideal positions within an equidistant chain to shorter (311.0 pm) and longer (392.8 pm) Cu/In–Cu/In distances. Single crystal data of the Heusler phases ScCu1.95In and ScCu1.94In show small degrees of copper vacancies.

Communication: Determination of relativistic effects from X-ray structure factors

In this communication, a procedure is presented which allows for the determination of the scalar-relativistic contraction of individual electronic shells of transition metal atoms from X-ray structure factor data. The procedure is verified and benchmarked employing theoretical and experimental F(hkl) data, revealing an overall good agreement between the experimentally determined results and the theoretical reference values. From the experimental data, the relativistic contraction of the n = 2 shell of a cerium atom is, for example, determined as 0.097 pm, compared to a theoretical reference value of 0.116 pm. It is further demonstrated that the reproducibility of the results is excellent when comparing different experimental data sets. Finally, the dependency of the according results on the data resolution of the structure factor data is investigated.

1D to 3D dimensional crossover in the superconducting transition of the quasi-one-dimensional carbide superconductor Sc3CoC4

The transition metal carbide superconductor Sc(3)CoC(4) may represent a new benchmark system of quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) superconducting behavior. We investigate the superconducting transition of a high-quality single crystalline sample by electrical transport experiments. Our data show that the superconductor goes through a complex dimensional crossover below the onset T(c) of 4.5 K. First, a quasi-1D fluctuating superconducting state with finite resistance forms in the [CoC(4)](∞) ribbons which are embedded in a Sc matrix in this material. At lower temperature, the transversal Josephson or proximity coupling of neighboring ribbons establishes a 3D bulk superconducting state. This dimensional crossover is very similar to Tl(2)Mo(6)Se(6), which for a long time has been regarded as the most appropriate model system of a quasi-1D superconductor. Sc(3)CoC(4) appears to be even more in the 1D limit than Tl(2)Mo(6)Se(6).

Comparison of silver and molybdenum microfocus X-ray sources for single-crystal structure determination

The quality of diffraction data obtained using silver and molybdenum microsources has been compared for six model compounds with a wide range of absorption factors. The experiments were performed on two 30 W air-cooled Incoatec IµS microfocus sources with multilayer optics mounted on a Bruker D8 goniometer with a SMART APEX II CCD detector. All data were analysed, processed and refined using standard Bruker software. The results show that Ag Kα radiation can be beneficial when heavy elements are involved. A numerical absorption correction based on the positions and indices of the crystal faces is shown to be of limited use for the highly focused microsource beams, presumably because the assumption that the crystal is completely bathed in a (top-hat profile) beam of uniform intensity is no longer valid. Fortunately the empirical corrections implemented in SADABS, although originally intended as a correction for absorption, also correct rather well for the variations in the effective volume of the crystal irradiated. In three of the cases studied (two Ag and one Mo) the final SHELXL R1 against all data after application of empirical corrections implemented in SADABS was below 1%. Since such corrections are designed to optimize the agreement of the intensities of equivalent reflections with different paths through the crystal but the same Bragg 2θ angles, a further correction is required for the 2θ dependence of the absorption. For this, SADABS uses the transmission factor of a spherical crystal with a user-defined value of μr (where μ is the linear absorption coefficient and r is the effective radius of the crystal); the best results are obtained when r is biased towards the smallest crystal dimension. The results presented here suggest that the IUCr publication requirement that a numerical absorption correction must be applied for strongly absorbing crystals is in need of revision.
