Osmotic behavior of in vitro produced bovine blastocysts in cryoprotectant solutions as a potential predictive test of survival

Vitrification of bovine embryos followed by in vitro hatching and expansion

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of bovine embryo vitrification by applying three different vitrification solutions containing ethylene glycol (EG) and dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) at different concentrations (10, 20 or 25% each) combined with 1.0 M glucose or 1.0 M sucrose, on the in vitro hatching and expansion rates. Healthy oocytes were selected for in vitro maturation and fertilization from 200 bovine ovaries, and subsequently cultured up to the blastocyst stage (n = 800). Control (n = 200) and vitrified cells (n = 100 per treatment; 600 in total) were cultured for an extra 24 or 48 h to evaluate hatching and expansion, respectively. Vitrification significantly decreased embryonic re-expansion and hatching rates independently of the tested solution when compared with control embryos, but solutions with 25% EG + 25% DMSO resulted in the highest re-expansion (75%) and hatching (70%) rates, independently of the added sugar. The addition of sucrose resulted in higher rates of re-expanded and hatched embryos when compared with glucose addition. We concluded that the combination of 25% EG + 25% DMSO and 1.0 M sucrose allowed hatching and expansion of vitrified-warmed bovine embryos produced in vitro.

Effect of antifreeze glycoprotein 8 supplementation during vitrification on the developmental competence of bovine oocytes

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of antifreeze glycoprotein 8 (AFGP8) supplementation during vitrification on the survival, fertilization, and embryonic development of bovine oocytes and the underlying molecular mechanism(s). Survival, fertilization, early embryonic development, apoptosis, DNA double-strand breaks, reactive oxygen species levels, meiotic cytoskeleton assembly, chromosome alignment, and energy status of mitochondria were measured in the present experiments. Compared with that in the nonsupplemented group; survival, monospermy, blastocyst formation rates, and blastomere counts were significantly higher in the AFGP8-supplemented animals. Oocytes of the latter group also presented fewer double-strand breaks and lower cathepsin B and caspase activities. Rates of normal spindle organization and chromosome alignment, actin filament impairment, and mitochondrial distribution were significantly higher in the AFGP8-supplemented group. In addition, intracellular reactive oxygen species levels significantly decreased in the AFGP8-supplemented groups, maintaining a higher ΔΨm than that in the nonsupplemented group. Taken together, these results indicated that supplementation with AFGP8 during vitrification has a protective effect on bovine oocytes against chilling injury.

Effect of cryopreservation technique and season on the survival of in vitro produced cattle embryos

Embryo cryopreservation is a major tool for conservation and propagation of genetically superior animals. However, it adversely affects the survival of embryos. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of cryopreservation technique (vitrification compared with slow freezing) and different seasons in which oocytes were obtained on the post-warming survival of in vitro produced (IVP) cattle morulae. In experiment 1, morulae (Day 6 post-IVF), obtained from abattoir-sourced oocytes during spring, summer, fall and winter over a period of 3.5 years, were subjected to either vitrification (n=271 morulae), slow freezing (n=281 morulae) or no freezing (control; n=249 morulae). After warming, the morulae were cultured to the expanded blastocyst stage (Day 8 post-IVF). Data were compared using Glimmix procedure in SAS(®). Blastocyst rate differed (P<0.05) among the treatments: unfrozen control (78±3.6%), vitrification (52±4.6%) and slow freezing (35±4.2%). The re-expansion of vitrified morulae upon warming was not correlated with subsequent blastocyst rate (r=-0.048; P>0.05). The morulae produced during fall season had lesser (P<0.05) cleavage and morula rates (67±1.6%; Day 2 post-IVF and 22±1.4%; Day 6 post-IVF, respectively) than all other seasons (74±1.1 and 30±1.2%, respectively). Blastocyst rate was the least (P<0.05) when oocytes were collected during the summer season in both control and slowly frozen groups. Blastocyst development rate did not change due to season in vitrification group (P>0.05). In conclusion, vitrification is a more desirable technique than slow freezing for cryopreservation of IVP cattle morulae. If the slow freezing method is employed, greater success can be achieved using oocytes collected in the winter and spring with a primary contributing factor being lesser morulae development if oocytes are collected in the fall and also the lesser blastocyst formation of cryopreserved morulae when oocytes are collected in the summer.

Effect of culture system on survival rate of vitrified bovine embryos produced in vitro

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of in vitro culture system on bovine blastocyst yield and quality after vitrification. In Experiment 1, IVM/IVF zygotes were allocated to three culture conditions: (I) Oviductal cells-SOF (OCM-SOF); (II) Oviductal cells-TCM (OCM-TCM); and (III) SOF for 8 days. There was no significant difference between blastocyst rates among groups. In Experiment 2, the IVP-blastocysts in three above culture conditions were vitrified within groups segregated according to age (Day 7 and 8) and blastocoelic cavity size (early and expanded blastocysts). A trend of higher survival rate was obtained in vitrified/warmed early blastocysts compared with expanded ones, so that the difference in OCM-TCM group was significant (P<0.001). Higher survival and hatching rates (P<0.001) were obtained in OCM-SOF and OCM-TCM groups (co-culture) compared with SOF group and the age of blastocyst had no effect on post-thaw survival and hatching rates. In Experiment 3, after staining of blastocysts, in fresh blastocysts the highest number of trophectoderm cells was observed in OCM-TCM group and the number of inner cell mass (ICM) was higher in co-culture groups than SOF group (P<0.001). In vitrified/warmed blastocysts the number of ICM and trophectoderm cells in co-culture groups was higher than SOF group (P<0.001) except for the ICM of expanded blastocysts. In conclusion, in our culture conditions, the blastocyst yield is not influenced by culture system, while the cryotolerance of IVP-blastocysts is positively influenced by the presence of somatic cells. Moreover, the expanded blastocysts are more susceptible to cryoinjury than early blastocysts.

Set up of a serum-free culture system for bovine embryos: embryo development and quality before and after transient transfer

It is well known that serum in culture medium negatively affects blastocyst quality. The objective of this work was to develop and test a serum-free culture medium which could improve embryo quality, measured by the resistance to freezing, lipid and glutathione content of the resulting blastocysts, as well as the ability of the blastocysts to elongate after transient transfer to recipient cows. In a first experiment we showed that adding a mixture of insulin, transferrin and selenium to serum-free Synthetic Oviduct Fluid medium (SOF-ITS) improved embryo development and quality. In the second experiment, the addition of BSA to SOF-ITS further improved blastocyst development. Moreover, a reduction in lipid content of morulae was observed in SOF-ITS-BSA by comparison with morulae cultured with serum (SOF-FCS). The resistance to freezing measured by hatching rates 24h post-thawing was also improved for blastocysts with a diameter between 160 and 180 microm cultured in SOF-ITS-BSA by comparison to those produced with serum. In order to evaluate the redox potential of the embryos, reduced glutathione content (GSH) was evaluated both before and after cryopreservation. A significant decrease in glutathione was observed after freezing, whatever the culture medium, but no difference was observed between culture conditions. Transient transfers were performed and elongated D-13 embryos were recovered. Elongation was more pronounced and the embryonic disk more often visible in embryos cultured in SOF-ITS-BSA than in embryos cultured with FCS. In conclusion, the serum-free system we developed to produce in vitro bovine embryos meets the developmental and qualitative requirements for a large-scale use.

In-straw cryoprotectant dilution of IVP bovine blastocysts vitrified in hand-pulled glass micropipettes

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of two ethylene glycol-based vitrification solutions on in vitro and in vivo survival after in-straw cryoprotectant dilution of vitrified in vitro-produced bovine embryos. Day-7 expanded blastocysts were selected according to diameter (> or = 180 microm) and osmotic characteristics and randomly assigned to one of three groups (i) VSa: vitrification in 40% EG+17.1% SUC+0.1% PVA; (ii) VSb: vitrification in 20% EG+20% DMSO; (iii) control: non-vitrified embryos. Vitrification was performed in hand-pulled glass micropipettes (GMP) and cryoprotectant dilution in 0.25 ml straws after warming in a plastic tube. Embryo viability was assessed by re-expansion and hatching rates after 72 h of IVC and by pregnancy rates after direct transfer of vitrified embryos. No differences in re-expansion rates were observed between vitrified groups after 24 h in culture (VSa=84.5%; VSb=94.8%). However, fewer VSa embryos (55.2%, P<0.05) hatched after 72 h than the VSb (75.8%) and control embryos (80.0%). To evaluate in vivo viability, vitrified embryos (VSa=20; VSb=21) were warmed under field conditions and individually transferred to synchronous recipients. Pregnancy rates (day 60) were similar between groups (VSa=20%; VSb=19%). Greater hatching rates occurred after 72 h of IVC for EG+DMSO than EG+SUC+PVA vitrification solutions. However, using a GMP vitrification container and in-tube warming, both solutions provided similar pregnancy rates after the in-straw cryoprotectant dilution and direct embryo transfer.

Vitrification of In Vitro-produced Bovine Embryos by Addition of Ethylene Glycol in One-step

The objective of this study was to simplify two-step addition of cryoprotectant for vitrification of bovine embryos by developing a one-step procedure. Survival was calculated as a percentage of non-vitrified controls developed from the same batch of oocytes. In experiment 1, bovine blastocysts were vitrified following one- or two-step addition of cryoprotectant. Exposure of embryos to cryoprotectant in one-step resulted in survival rates not significantly lower (p > 0.1) than those obtained by two-step addition (85% vs 98%, respectively). Based on these results, experiments 2-4 were designed to test one-step addition of cryoprotectant more rigorously. Experiment 2 exposed day 7 blastocysts to 6, 7 or 8 M ethylene glycol for 2.5 or 3.5 min. At 24 h post-vitrification, survival of embryos was similar, irrespective of ethylene glycol concentration or exposure time (6 M 38%, 7 M 51%, 8 M 59%; 2.5 min 54%, 3.5 min 45%). In experiment 3, blastocysts were exposed to 7 M ethylene glycol for shorter times (30 or 60 s); 30 s exposure resulted in decreased survival (8% vs 31%, p < 0.05). Experiment 4 concerned one-step addition of cryoprotectant to day 6 bovine morulae, exposed to 7 M ethylene glycol for 1 or 1.5 min. There was no difference in survival between exposure times of 1 or 1.5 min (28% vs 45%, respectively; p > 0.1). It is unclear why many embryos survive vitrification with one-step addition of cryoprotectant, but others do not. Although, one-step addition of cryoprotectant simplifies the vitrification procedure, survival rates were inadequate for routine cryopreservation of in vitro-produced bovine embryos.

Generation of viable fish from cryopreserved primordial germ cells

An increasing number of wild fish species are in danger of extinction, often as a result of human activities. The cryopreservation of gametes and embryos has great potential for maintaining and restoring threatened species. The conservation of both paternal and maternal genetic information is essential. However, although this technique has been successfully applied to the spermatozoa of many fish species, reliable methods are lacking for the long-term preservation of fish eggs and embryos. Here, we describe a protocol for use with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) primordial germ cells (PGCs) and document the restoration of live fish from gametes derived from these cryopreserved progenitors. Genital ridges (GRs), which are embryonic tissues containing PGCs, were successfully cryopreserved in a medium containing 1.8 M ethylene glycol (EG). The thawed PGCs that were transplanted into the peritoneal cavities of allogenic trout hatchlings differentiated into mature spermatozoa and eggs in the recipient gonads. Furthermore, the fertilization of eggs derived from cryopreserved PGCs by cryopreserved spermatozoa resulted in the development of fertile F1 fish. This PGC cryopreservation technique represents a promising tool in efforts to save threatened fish species. Moreover, this approach has significant potential for maintaining domesticated fish strains carrying commercially valuable traits for aquaculture purposes.

Permeability of mouse oocytes and embryos at various developmental stages to five cryoprotectants

To assess the permeability of mouse oocytes and embryos, matured oocytes and embryos at various stages of development were placed in five cryoprotectant solutions at 25 C for 25 min. From the cross-sectional areas of the oocytes/embryos, the relative change in volume was analyzed. In oocytes, shrinkage was least extensive and recovery was quickest in the propylene glycol solution, showing that propylene glycol permeates the oocytes most rapidly. Dimethyl sulfoxide, acetamide, and ethylene glycol permeated the oocytes slightly more slowly than propylene glycol. The oocytes in glycerol shrunk extensively and then expanded marginally, indicating slow permeation. The volume changes of 1-cell and 2-cell embryos were similar to those of oocytes, showing little change in permeability. In 8-cell embryos, the volume recovered much faster than in the earlier stages especially in glycerol and acetamide. In morulae, the volume recovery was much faster in glycerol and in ethylene glycol; in ethylene glycol, the extent of shrinkage was small and the recovery was fast, indicating an extremely rapid permeation. Although the permeability of oocytes/embryos generally increased as embryo development proceeded, the degree of increase varied greatly among the cryoprotectants. Interestingly, the volume change in propylene glycol was virtually unaffected by the stage of development. Such information will be valuable for determining a suitable protocol for the cryopreservation of oocytes/embryos at different stages of development.

Impact of pro-oxidant agents on the morula-blastocyst transition in bovine embryos

Exposing day 5 bovine morulae to reactive oxygen species induces a delayed degeneration of some blastocysts on day 8 post-insemination (pi) but without affecting the blastocyst rates. The aim of this study was to characterize the resisting and the degenerating population of blastocysts. The kinetics of degeneration of the embryos exposed to the two pro-oxidant agents: 2,2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) and buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) was evaluated using time-lapse cinematography. With both agents the first signs of degeneration appeared at day 7.5 pi but the duration of the degeneration process was shorter in presence of AAPH than BSO (4.2 vs. 12.5 hr, ANOVA, P < 0.05). The resisting blastocysts derived from morulae with a larger diameter (mean diameter: 161 vs. 154 microm, ANOVA, P < 0.05) and showed an earlier cavitation (135 vs. 142 hpi, P < 0.05) than the degenerating ones. The profile of protein neosynthesis at day 7 was not affected by the treatment. The proportion of male embryos was more important in the resisting than in the degenerating population (70 vs. 55%, chi2, P < 0.05) especially when the stress was induced by AAPH. The quality of the resisting embryos, measured by the total cell number and the rate of apoptosis, did not seem to be affected when compared to control embryos. In conclusion, resistance to oxidative stress seems related to the kinetics of development and/or the sex of the embryos. Resisting embryos apparently display a quality similar to untreated embryos.

Establishment of pregnancies after serial dilution or direct transfer by vitrified equine embryos

Experiments were conducted to determine viability of equine embryos in vivo after vitrification. In a preliminary study (Experiment 1), embryos were exposed in three steps to vitrification solutions containing increasing concentrations of ethylene glycol and glycerol (EG/G); the final vitrification solution was 3.4 M glycerol + 4.6 M ethylene glycol in a base medium of phosphate-buffered saline. Embryos were warmed in a two-step dilution and transferred into uteri of recipients. No pregnancies were observed after transfer of blastocysts >300 microm (n = 3). Transfer of morulae or blastocysts < or = 300 microm resulted in four embryonic vesicles (4/6, 67%). In a second experiment, embryo recovery per ovulation was similar for collections on Day 6(28/36, 78%) versus Days 7 and 8(30/48, 62%). Embryos < or = 300 and >300 microm were vitrified, thawed and transferred as in Experiment 1. Some embryos < or = 300 microm were also transferred using a direct-transfer procedure (DT). Embryo development rates to Day 16 were not different for embryos < or = 300 microm that were treated as in Experiment 1(10/22, 46%) or transferred by DT (16/26, 62%). Embryos > 300 microm (n = 19) did not produce embryonic vesicles.

High pregnancy rates can be achieved after freezing and thawing human blastocysts

OBJECTIVE

To examine the results of a 3-year trial using blastocyst cryopreservation to limit multiple pregnancy and optimize overall pregnancy per cycle.

DESIGN

Retrospective clinical evaluation of pregnancy rates after freezing and thawing human blastocysts.

SETTING

Tertiary-care academic center.

PATIENT(S)

Seven hundred fifty-three different patients treated in 783 IVF cycles with blastocysts frozen from July 2000 to June 2003.

INTERVENTION(S)

Two thousand, two hundred fifty-nine blastocysts were frozen in cycles in which only blastocysts were cryopreserved (cycles with pronuclear stage oocytes or pre-embryos also cryopreserved were excluded from the analysis). Of these, 628 (27.6%) were thawed in 218 cycles.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)

Pregnancy rate per cycle with thaw.

RESULT(S)

Four hundred seventy-nine (76.3%) blastocysts survived thawing, and 440 (92.0%) were transferred after exhibiting evidence of survival (most commonly, blastocoele reexpansion). In cycles with a thaw, 211 (96.8%) of 218 underwent intrauterine transfer. An average of 2.09 blastocysts was transferred per replacement. One hundred twenty-five (59.2%) clinical pregnancies were established, which included 23 sets of twins and 5 triplet gestations. Two sets of monozygotic twins were identified after the replacement of a single thawed blastocyst (1.6%). The age of the patient at the time of cryopreservation (<37 years) was an important factor in the establishment of clinical and ongoing pregnancy. The mode of ovarian stimulation, replacement method, and whether blastocysts were frozen on day 5 or day 6 of development did not demonstrate clinical significance.

CONCLUSION(S)

Cryopreserved and thawed blastocysts demonstrated a similar potential for implantation when compared with fresh pre-embryos on day 3. On the basis of these results, the blastocyst stage of development appears to be optimal for clinical freeze-thaw trials.

An overview of oocyte cryopreservation

The ability to cryopreserve human oocytes and store them indefinitely would be beneficial for cancer patients at risk of becoming sterile after therapy, allow women to delay reproduction, and alleviate religious concerns associated with embryo storage. In 1986, Chen was the first to report a pregnancy originating from a frozen-thawed human oocyte. Although over 100 babies have been born from oocyte storage since then, pregnancy rates remain unacceptably low. Adapting embryo cryopreservation techniques to oocyte storage has had limited success and new reproducible methods are needed. Problem areas other than intracellular ice formation and osmotic effects need to be identified. A broad approach of critical analysis should be conducted regarding the entire cryopreservation process from pre-equilibration and cooling, to thawing and stepout. All established facets deserve reanalysis in order to assess which aspects can be optimized or changed so that cellular demise can be avoided and cellular viability enhanced. New methods, including the use of choline-based media and vitrification have proven useful in increasing survival and pregnancy rates in some clinics. Other methods yet untested, such as injection of complex carbohydrates into the oocyte, deserve further studies. Vitrification research has led to the formulation of new ideas and has demonstrated the flexibility of cells to survive cryopreservation. Although successful, vitrification protocols are potentially harmful and technically challenging, due to elevated cryoprotectant concentrations and rapid cooling rates. Bovine embryo vitrification methods have been used to store human oocytes and embryos, particularly blastocysts with some success. Vitrification solutions containing high molecular weight polymers have also proved beneficial by reducing solution toxicity. In general, further advances are needed to improve human oocyte storage before widespread routine clinical use.

Aquaporin proteins in murine trophectoderm mediate transepithelial water movements during cavitation

Mammalian blastocyst formation is dependent on establishment of trophectoderm (TE) ion and fluid transport mechanisms. We have examined the expression and function of aquaporin (AQP) water channels during murine preimplantation development. AQP 3, 8, and 9 proteins demonstrated cell margin-associated staining starting at the 8-cell (AQP 9) or compacted morula (AQP 3 and 8) stages. In blastocysts, AQP 3 and 8 were detected in the basolateral membrane domains of the trophectoderm, while AQP3 was also observed in cell margins of all inner cell mass (ICM) cells. In contrast, AQP 9 was predominantly observed within the apical membrane domains of the TE. Murine blastocysts exposed to hyperosmotic culture media (1800 mOsm; 10% glycerol) demonstrated a rapid volume decrease followed by recovery to approximately 80% of initial volume over 5 min. Treatment of blastocysts with p-chloromercuriphenylsulfonic acid (pCMPS, > or =100 microM) for 5 min significantly impaired (P < 0.05) volume recovery, indicating the involvement of AQPs in fluid transport across the TE. Blastocysts exposure to an 1800-mOsm sucrose/KSOMaa solution did not demonstrate volume recovery as observed following treatment with glycerol containing medium, indicating glycerol permeability via AQPs 3 and 9. These findings support the hypothesis that aquaporins mediate trans-trophectodermal water movements during cavitation.

Nonequilibrium cryopreservation of rabbit embryos using a modified (sealed) open pulled straw procedure

The study was designed to evaluate the efficiency of a modified (sealed) open pulled straw (mOPS) method for cryopreserving rabbit embryos by vitrification or rapid freezing. An additional objective was to determine whether the mOPS method could cause the vitrification of a cryoprotectant solution generally used in rapid freezing procedures. Two consecutive experiments of in vitro and in vivo viability were performed. In Experiment 1, the in vitro viability of rabbit embryos at the morula, compacted morula, early blastocyst and blastocyst stages was assessed after exposure to a mixture of 25% glycerol and 25% ethylene glycol (25GLY:25EG: vitrification solution) or 4.5 M (approximately 25% EG) ethylene glycol and 0.25 M sucrose (25EG:SUC: rapid freezing solution). Embryos were loaded into standard straws or mOPS and plunged directly into liquid nitrogen. The mOPS consisted of standard straws that were heat-pulled, leaving a wide opening for the cotton plug and a narrow one for loading embryos by capillarity. The embryos were aspirated into the mOPS in a column positioned between two columns of cryoprotectant solution separated by air bubbles. The mOPS were then sealed with polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) sealing powder. The vitrification 25GLY:25EG solution became vitrified both in standard straws and mOPS, whereas the rapid freezing 25EG:SUC solution crystallized in standard straws, but vitrified in mOPS. The total number of embryos cryopreserved was 1695. Embryos cryopreserved after exposure to each solution in mOPS showed higher rates (88.2%) of survival immediately after thawing and removal of the cryoprotectant than those cryopreserved in 0.25 ml standard straws (78.8%; P < 0.0001). After culture, the developmental stage of the cryopreserved embryos significantly affected the rates of development to the expanded blastocyst stage. Regardless of the cryoprotectant used, lower rates of in vitro development were obtained when the embryos were cryopreserved at the morula stage, and higher rates achieved using embryos at blastocyst stages. Based on the results of Experiment 1, the second experiment was performed on blastocysts using the mOPS method. Experiment 2 was designed to evaluate the in vivo viability of cryopreserved rabbit blastocysts loaded into mOPS after exposure to 25GLY:25EG or 25EG:SUC. Embryos cryopreserved in mOPS and 25GLY:25EG solution gave rise to rates of live offspring (51.7%) not significantly different to those achieved using fresh embryos (58.5%). In conclusion, the modified (sealed) OPS method allows vitrification of the cryoprotectant solution at a lower concentration of cryoprotectants than that generally used in vitrification procedures. Rabbit blastocysts cryopreserved using a 25GLY:25EG solution in mOPS showed a similar rate of in vivo development after thawing to that shown by fresh embryos.

Vitrification of in vitro produced bovine embryos: in vitro and in vivo evaluations

The efficacy of different vitrification solutions to cryopreserve in vitro produced bovine blastocysts was evaluated based upon in vitro development of embryos in culture and on in vivo development of embryos transferred into recipients. In the first experiment, ethylene glycol + glycerol (Eg + Gly) + different sucrose concentrations were evaluated. There were no significant differences in development rates among solutions. As for hatching, the Eg + Gly + 0.1 M sucrose group had a greater rate as compared with Eg + Gly + 0 M sucrose and Eg + Gly + 0.5 M sucrose groups in the evaluations of Day 6, Day 7 and Day 6 + Day 7 embryos; and, Eg + Gly + 0.3 M sucrose group had a greater rate as compared with the Eg + Gly + 0 M sucrose and Eg + Gly + 0.5 M sucrose groups in evaluations of Day 6 and Day 6 + Day 7 embryos. There were no significant differences in development and hatching rates between Day 6 and 7 in in vitro produced bovine embryos within each treatment group. There were significant differences in nuclei number after vitrification between Eg + Gly + 0.1 M and Eg + Gly + 0 M sucrose groups and the Eg + Gly + 0.5 M sucrose group. Pregnancy after 60 days of transfer and calving rates showed a difference between in vivo produced embryos freshly transferred and in vitro produced embryos vitrified with Eg + Gly + 0.3 M. There were no significant differences in gestation length and sex ratio between treatments. As for birth weight, there were significant differences between fresh in vivo produced embryos and all treatments of in vitro produced embryos. There were significant differences in dystocial parturition between in vivo produced embryos and all treatments with in vitro produced embryos. These results demonstrate that vitrification can be used successfully in the cryopreservation of in vitro produced bovine embryos, and that it might be considered for use in commercial programs.
