Abstract
Due to their low cost, simplicity, and pump-free liquid transport properties, colorimetric assays on paper spots and microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) are regarded as useful tools for point-of-care testing (POCT). However, for certain types of colorimetric assays, the "non-transparent" and "white" characters of paper can be a disadvantage. In this work, the possibilities of using cellophane as an alternative platform for colorimetric assays have been investigated. Cellophane is a low cost and easy-to-handle transparent film made of regenerated cellulose. Owing to its hydrophilic character, cellophane-based microfluidic channels fabricated through a print-cut-laminate approach enabled pump-free liquid transport into multiple detection areas, similar to µPADs. In addition, the water absorption characteristics of cellophane allowed the stable immobilization of water-soluble colorimetric indicators without any surface modification or additional reagents. The transparency of cellophane provides possibilities for simple background coloring of the substrates, increasing the dynamic signal range for hue-based colorimetric assays, as demonstrated for two model assays targeting H2O2 (46-fold increase) and creatinine (3.6-fold increase). Finally, a turbidity detection-based protein assay was realized on black background cellophane spots. The lowest limits of detection achieved with the cellophane-based devices were calculated as 7 µM for H2O2, 2.7 mg dL-1 for creatinine, and 3.5 mg dL-1 for protein (human serum albumin).

Abstract
The salt permeability through three commercial cation-exchange membranes with different morphologies is investigated in aqueous NaCl solutions. Ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) find application in different processes such as electrodialysis, reverse osmosis, diffusion dialysis, membrane electrolysis, membrane fuel cells and ion exchange bioreactors. The aim of this paper is the experimental determination of the electrolyte permeability in the following membranes: MK-40 membrane, Nafion N324 membrane and Nafion 117 membrane. The latter is selected as being a reference membrane. The effect of an increase in the NaCl concentration in the solutions on membranes transport properties is analyzed. With regard to membranes sorption, a decrease in the water content was observed when the external electrolyte concentration is increased. Concerning permeation through the membranes, the salt permeability increased with concentration for the Nafion 117 membrane and remained nearly constant for the other two membranes. A close relation between the degree of liquid sorption by the membranes and the electrolyte permeability was observed.

Abstract
The membrane potential arising through nanofiltration membranes separating two aqueous solutions of the same electrolyte at identical hydrostatic pressures but different concentrations is investigated within the scope of the steric, electric, and dielectric exclusion model. The influence of the ion size and the so-called dielectric exclusion on the membrane potential arising through both neutral and electrically charged membranes is investigated. Dielectric phenomena have no influence on the membrane potential through neutral membranes, unlike ion size effects which increase the membrane potential value. For charged membranes, both steric and dielectric effects increase the membrane potential at a given concentration but the diffusion potential (that is the high-concentration limit of the membrane potential) is affected only by steric effects. It is therefore proposed that membrane potential measurements carried out at high salt concentrations could be used to determine the mean pore size of nanofiltration membranes. In practical cases, the membrane volume charge density and the dielectric constant inside pores depend on the physicochemical properties of both the membrane and the surrounding solutions (pH, concentration, and chemical nature of ions). It is shown that the Donnan and dielectric exclusions affect the membrane potential of charged membranes similarly; namely, a higher salt concentration is needed to screen the membrane fixed charge. The membrane volume charge density and the pore dielectric constant cannot then be determined unambiguously by means of membrane potential experiments, and additional independent measurements are in need. It is suggested to carry out rejection rate measurements (together with membrane potential measurements).
