Raman spectroscopic study of the tellurite mineral: rodalquilarite H3Fe2(3+)(Te4+O3)4Cl

Tellurites may be subdivided according to formula and structure. There are five groups based upon the formulae (a) A(XO3); (b) A(XO3).xH2O; (c) A2(XO3)3.xH2O; (d) A2(X2O5) and (e) A(X3O8). Rodalquilarite, a tellurite mineral of type (a) has been studied using Raman spectroscopy. Observed from the spectra was the presence of protons, an essential stabilising element for the minerals structure and stability. The tellurite ion should show a maximum of six bands. The free tellurite ion shows C3v symmetry and has four modes, 2A1 and 2E. Three Raman bands at 726, 755 and 780 cm(-1) are assigned to the nu1 (TeO3)2- symmetric stretching mode and the two bands at 610 and 642 cm(-1) are attributed to the nu3 (TeO3)2- antisymmetric stretching mode. The two bands at 321 and 345 cm(-1) and the two bands at 449 and 473 cm(-1) are assigned to the (TeO3)2-nu2 (A1) bending mode and (TeO3)2-nu4 (E) bending mode. Raman bands observed at 2341, 2796 and 2870 cm(-1) are attributed to OH stretching vibrations caused by interaction between the protons and the oxygen of the tellurite units. The values for these OH stretching vibrations provide hydrogen bond distances of 2.550 (6) A (2341 cm(-1)), 2.610 (3) A (2796 cm(-1)) and 2.623 (2) A (2870 cm(-1)) which are comparatively short for secondary minerals.

[Cd2(Te6O13)][Cd2Cl6] and Cd7Cl8(Te7O17): Novel Tellurium(IV) Oxide Slabs and Unusual Cadmium Chloride Architectures

Initial attempts to prepare new Ln-Cd-Te-O-Cl compounds led to the isolation of two novel cadmium tellurium(IV) oxychlorides with two different types of structures, namely, [Cd(2)(Te(6)O(13))][Cd(2)Cl(6)] and Cd(7)Cl(8)(Te(7)O(17)). Both compounds feature novel polymeric tellurium(IV) oxide anions and unusual cadmium chloride substructures. The structure of [Cd(2)(Te(6)O(13))][Cd(2)Cl(6)] is composed of 1D [Cd(2)Cl(6)](2)(-) double chains and (002) [Cd(2)(Te(6)O(13))](2+) layers. The 1D Te(6)O(13)(2)(-) slab of the [Cd(2)(Te(6)O(13))](2+) layer is formed by TeO(3), TeO(4), and TeO(5) groups via corner- and edge-sharing, and it contains six- and seven-membered tellurium(IV) polyhedral rings. The structure of Cd(7)Cl(8)(Te(7)O(17)) features a 3D network with long-narrow tunnels along the b axis. The two types of structural building blocks are 1D [Te(7)O(17)](6)(-) anions and unusual corrugated [Cd(7)Cl(8)](6+) layers based on "cyclohexane-like" Cd(3)Cl(3) rings.

Structural modulation of molybdenyl iodate architectures by alkali metal cations in AMoO3(IO3) (A = K, Rb, Cs): a facile route to new polar materials with large SHG responses

Three new molybdenyl iodates, KMoO3(IO3) (1), RbMoO3(IO3) (2), and CsMoO3(IO3) (3), have been prepared through the hydrothermal reactions of MoO3 with AIO4 (A = K, Rb, or Cs) at 180 C. These compounds are isolated as nearly colorless, air-stable crystals. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments reveal that 1 possesses a corrugated layered structure constructed from molybdenum oxide chains that are bridged by iodate anions. The puckering of the layers is caused by the alignment of bent molybdenyl (MoO2(2+)) groups along one side of the molybdenum oxide chains. The K+ cations separate these layers from one another and serve to balance charge. In contrast, compounds 2 and 3, which are isostructural, form three-dimensional structures with small cavities filled with Rb+ or Cs+ cations. The differences between the structures of 1 and those of 2 and 3 are due to rotation of the molybdenyl units as translation occurs down the molybdenum oxide chains in order to accommodate the increased size of the Rb+ and Cs+ cations. This rotation allows for the iodate anions to bridge the molybdenum oxide chains in an additional dimension, creating a three-dimensional network structure. Furthermore, while 1 crystallizes in a centrosymmetric space group, 2 and 3 crystallize in polar space groups. Second-harmonic generation measurements on 2 and 3 show large responses of 400x alpha-quartz. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements demonstrate that 2 and 3 are thermally stable to 494 and 486 C, respectively. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra of these compounds show a high degree of transparency from 1 to 3 eV and a band gap of 3.1 eV.

Excision of uranium oxide chains and ribbons in the novel one-dimensional uranyl iodates K(2)[(UO(2))3(IO(3))(4)O(2)] and Ba[(UO(2)2(IO(3))(2)O(2)](H(2)O)

The alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal uranyl iodates K(2)[(UO(2))(3)(IO(3))(4)O(2)] and Ba[(UO(2))(2)(IO(3))(2)O(2)](H(2)O) have been prepared from the hydrothermal reactions of KCl or BaCl(2) with UO(3) and I(2)O(5) at 425 and 180 degrees C, respectively. While K(2)[(UO(2))(3)(IO(3))(4)O(2)] can be synthesized under both mild and supercritical conditions, the yield increases from <5% to 73% as the temperature is raised from 180 to 425 degrees C. Ba[(UO(2))(2)(IO(3))(2)O(2)](H(2)O), however, has only been isolated from reactions performed in the mild temperature regime. Thermal measurements (DSC) indicate that K(2)[(UO(2))(3)(IO(3))(4)O(2)] is more stable than Ba[(UO(2))(2)(IO(3))(2)O(2)](H(2)O) and that both compounds decompose through thermal disproportionation at 579 and 575 degrees C, respectively. The difference in the thermal behavior of these compounds provides a basis for the divergence of their preparation temperatures. The structure of K(2)[(UO(2))(3)(IO(3))(4)O(2)] is composed of [(UO(2))(3)(IO(3))(4)O(2)](2)(-) chains built from the edge-sharing UO(7) pentagonal bipyramids and UO(6) octahedra. Ba[(UO(2))(2)(IO(3))(2)O(2)](H(2)O) consists of one-dimensional [(UO(2))(2)(IO(3))(2)O(2)](2)(-) ribbons formed from the edge sharing of distorted UO(7) pentagonal bipyramids. In both compounds the iodate groups occur in both bridging and monodentate binding modes and further serve to terminate the edges of the uranium oxide chains. The K(+) or Ba(2+) cations separate the chains or ribbons in these compounds forming bonds with terminal oxygen atoms from the iodate ligands.
