The Current Status of Somatostatin-Interneurons in Inhibitory Control of Brain Function and Plasticity

The mammalian neocortex contains many distinct inhibitory neuronal populations to balance excitatory neurotransmission. A correct excitation/inhibition equilibrium is crucial for normal brain development, functioning, and controlling lifelong cortical plasticity. Knowledge about how the inhibitory network contributes to brain plasticity however remains incomplete. Somatostatin- (SST-) interneurons constitute a large neocortical subpopulation of interneurons, next to parvalbumin- (PV-) and vasoactive intestinal peptide- (VIP-) interneurons. Unlike the extensively studied PV-interneurons, acknowledged as key components in guiding ocular dominance plasticity, the contribution of SST-interneurons is less understood. Nevertheless, SST-interneurons are ideally situated within cortical networks to integrate unimodal or cross-modal sensory information processing and therefore likely to be important mediators of experience-dependent plasticity. The lack of knowledge on SST-interneurons partially relates to the wide variety of distinct subpopulations present in the sensory neocortex. This review informs on those SST-subpopulations hitherto described based on anatomical, molecular, or electrophysiological characteristics and whose functional roles can be attributed based on specific cortical wiring patterns. A possible role for these subpopulations in experience-dependent plasticity will be discussed, emphasizing on learning-induced plasticity and on unimodal and cross-modal plasticity upon sensory loss. This knowledge will ultimately contribute to guide brain plasticity into well-defined directions to restore sensory function and promote lifelong learning.

Massively parallel networks for edge localization and contour integration--adaptable relaxation approach

The paper describes a new adaptive neural network for edge-based pattern extraction problems. In the model, each neuron represents an edge with continuous state variables describing its location and orientation. The post-synaptic distribution is dependent on the state variables. Each neuron adjusts its state to increase its membrane potential, which results in highly adaptive dynamics of the synaptic weight distribution. The network allocates multiple neurons with different orientation modes for each edge. The strategy allows accurate modeling of multi-modal distributions at key-points such as corners and junctions. As a result, the network delineates edges at sub-pixel accuracy while preserving key-points. It is also capable of processing a sequence of images and following moving objects. The network is extended for contour integration and key-point detection tasks. The paper presents experiments conducted on both synthetic and non-synthetic data to demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique.

Laminar differences in plasticity in area 17 following retinal lesions in kittens or adult cats

Circumscribed retinal lesions in adult cats result in a reorganization of circuitry in area 17 such that neurons in the lesion projection zone (LPZ) can now be activated, not from their original receptive fields (RFs) but from regions of normal retina adjacent to the lesion ('ectopic' RFs). We have studied this phenomenon further by making circumscribed monocular retinal lesions in 8-week-old kittens and recording responses to visual stimuli of neurons in the LPZ of area 17 when these cats reached adulthood. These responses have been compared with those in adult-lesioned cats either of relatively short postlesion survival (2-24 weeks) or long postlesion survival (3.5-4.5 years). In both kitten-lesioned and adult-lesioned animals most LPZ neurons recorded from the supragranular layers (II and III) not only exhibited new ectopic RFs when stimuli were presented via the lesioned eye but the RF properties (e.g. the sizes of excitatory RFs, orientation and direction selectivities, velocity preferences and upper cut-off velocities) were often indistinguishable from those seen when stimuli were presented via the nonlesioned eye. Similarly, in both kitten-lesioned and adult-lesioned animals, most LPZ neurons recorded from the granular and infragranular layers (IV, V, VI), like those recorded from the supragranular layers, were binocular. However, in adult-lesioned but not in kitten-lesioned animals, the responses and the upper cut-off velocities of LPZ cells recorded from the granular and infragranular layers to stimuli presented via ectopic RFs tended to be, respectively, substantially weaker and lower than those for stimuli presented via the nonlesioned eye. The age-related laminar differences in reorganizational plasticity of cat striate cortex correlate with the lamino-temporal pattern of distribution of N-methyl-d-aspartate glutamate receptors in striate cortex.

Activity-dependent receptive field changes in the surround of adult cat visual cortex lesions

Extracellular single cell spike activity was recorded in the visual cortex of anaesthetized adult cats at identical sites before and 2 days after focal excitotoxic lesions induced by injections of ibotenic acid. In the surround of the lesions (up to 5 mm from the border of the lesion), the average postlesion receptive field (RF) sizes were not different from the prelesion RFs. However, RFs of neurons with increased postlesion excitability were slightly enlarged; such neurons were mainly found close to the anterior border of the lesion (< or = 1 mm). After applying a visual training procedure for 1 h to the postlesion RFs (repetitive, synchronous stimulation of a part of the RF and the neighbouring unresponsive part of the visual field), there was a small (0.4-0.8 degrees ) but significant and specific increase of RF size in about half of the tested neurons. This RF enlargement was similar to that observed with the same training procedure in the visual cortex of normal cats. Thus, small RF changes can be induced by visual stimulation within one hour in normal cells as well as in cells at the border of cortical lesions. Any differences between normal and lesioned animals appear to be related to lesion-induced changes of excitability.
