Abstract
We study biosourced core-shell particles with a starch-based core and thermo-responsive polymer brush shell using surface-initiated single-electron transfer living radical polymerization (SI-SET-LRP) as a Pickering stabilizer. The shell endows the Pickering stabilizer with reversible emulsification/demulsification of oil and water properties. The initiator attached to the starch-based nanosphere (Br-SNP) core particle was first fabricated using the precipitation method. Subsequently, dense poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brush graft-modified starch-based nanoparticles (SNP- g-PNIPAM) were obtained via the SI-SET-LRP process. Interfacial properties of the resultant particles were analyzed by interfacial tensiometer measurements, as were the effects of the grafted polymer chain length and temperature on the interfacial activity. Pickering emulsion was obtained using SNP- g-PNIPAM particles as the stabilizer. The effect of the concentration of the Pickering stabilizer on the size of emulsion droplets was analyzed. The emulsification/demulsification process of the Pickering emulsion can be reversed and easily repeated by changing the temperature.

Abstract
The reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization method was adopted here to prepare a series of thermo-sensitive copolymers, poly (N,N-diethyl- acrylamide-b-N-vinylpyrrolidone). Their structures, molecular weight distribution and temperature sensitivity performances were characterized by the nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR), the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and the fluorescence spectrophotometer, respectively. It has been identified that the synthesis reaction of the block copolymer was living polymerization. The thermo-sensitivity study suggested that N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), played a key role on the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) performance.

Abstract
The present study focuses on the use of copolymer nanoparticles as a dispersant for a model pigment (silica). Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) alcoholic dispersion polymerization was used to synthesize sterically stabilized diblock copolymer nanoparticles. The steric stabilizer block was poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMA) and the core-forming block was poly(benzyl methacrylate) (PBzMA). The mean degrees of polymerization for the PDMA and PBzMA blocks were 71 and 100, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies confirmed a near-monodisperse spherical morphology, while dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies indicated an intensity-average diameter of 30 nm. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) reported a volume-average diameter of 29 ± 0.5 nm and a mean aggregation number of 154. Aqueous electrophoresis measurements confirmed that these PDMA71-PBzMA100 nanoparticles acquired cationic character when transferred from ethanol to water as a result of protonation of the weakly basic PDMA chains. Electrostatic adsorption of these nanoparticles from aqueous solution onto 470 nm silica particles led to either flocculation at submonolayer coverage or steric stabilization at or above monolayer coverage, as judged by DLS. This technique indicated that saturation coverage was achieved on addition of approximately 465 copolymer nanoparticles per silica particle, which corresponds to a fractional surface coverage of around 0.42. These adsorption data were corroborated using thermogravimetry, UV spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. TEM studies indicated that the cationic nanoparticles remained intact on the silica surface after electrostatic adsorption, while aqueous electrophoresis confirmed that surface charge reversal occurred below pH 7. The relatively thick layer of adsorbed nanoparticles led to a significant reduction in the effective particle density of the silica particles from 1.99 g cm-3 to approximately 1.74 g cm-3, as judged by disk centrifuge photosedimentometry (DCP). Combining the DCP and SAXS data suggests that essentially no deformation of the PBzMA cores occurs during nanoparticle adsorption onto the silica particles.

Abstract
Stratified coatings are used to provide properties at a surface, such as hardness or refractive index, which are different from underlying layers. Although time-savings are offered by self-assembly approaches, there have been no methods yet reported to offer stratification on demand. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to create self-assembled stratified coatings, which can be switched to homogeneous structures when required. We use blends of large and small colloidal polymer particle dispersions in water that self-assemble during drying because of an osmotic pressure gradient that leads to a downward velocity of larger particles. Our confocal fluorescent microscopy images reveal a distinct surface layer created by the small particles. When the pH of the initial dispersion is raised, the hydrophilic shells of the small particles swell substantially, and the stratification is switched off. Brownian dynamics simulations explain the suppression of stratification when the small particles are swollen as a result of reduced particle mobility, a drop in the pressure gradient, and less time available before particle jamming. Our strategy paves the way for applications in antireflection films and protective coatings in which the required surface composition can be achieved on demand, simply by adjusting the pH prior to deposition.

Abstract
Recently, polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has become widely recognized as a robust and efficient route to produce block copolymer nanoparticles of controlled size, morphology, and surface chemistry. Several reviews of this field have been published since 2012, but a substantial number of new papers have been published in the last three years. In this Perspective, we provide a critical appraisal of the various advantages offered by this approach, while also pointing out some of its current drawbacks. Promising future research directions as well as remaining technical challenges and unresolved problems are briefly highlighted.

Abstract
A near-monodisperse poly(stearyl methacrylate) macromolecular chain transfer agent (PSMA macro-CTA) was prepared via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) solution polymerisation in toluene. This PSMA macro-CTA was then utilised as a stabiliser block for the RAFT dispersion polymerisation of a highly polar monomer, N-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl pyrrolidone (NMEP), in n-dodecane at 90 °C. 1H NMR studies confirmed that the rate of NMEP polymerisation was significantly faster than that of a non-polar monomer (benzyl methacrylate, BzMA) under the same conditions. For example, when targeting a PSMA14-PNMEP100 diblock copolymer, more than 99% NMEP conversion was achieved within 30 min, whereas only 19% BzMA conversion was obtained on the same time scale for the corresponding PSMA14-PBzMA100 synthesis. The resulting PSMA-PNMEP diblock copolymer chains underwent polymerisation-induced self-assembly (PISA) during growth of the insoluble PNMEP block to form either spherical micelles, highly anisotropic worms or polydisperse vesicles, depending on the target DP of the PNMEP chains. Systematic variation of this latter parameter, along with the solids content, allowed the construction of a phase diagram which enabled pure morphologies to be reproducibly targeted. Syntheses conducted at 10% w/w solids led to the formation of kinetically-trapped spheres. A monotonic increase in particle diameter with PNMEP DP was observed for such PISA syntheses, with particle diameters of up to 462 nm being obtained for PSMA14-PNMEP960. Increasing the copolymer concentration to 15% w/w solids led to worm-like micelles, while vesicles were obtained at 27.5% w/w solids. High (≥95%) NMEP conversions were achieved in all cases and 3 : 1 chloroform/methanol GPC analysis indicated relatively high blocking efficiencies. However, relatively broad molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn > 1.50) were observed when targeting PNMEP DPs greater than 150. This indicates light branching caused by the presence of a low level of dimethacrylate impurity. Finally, PSMA14-PNMEP49 spheres were evaluated as Pickering emulsifiers. Unexpectedly, it was found that either water-in-oil or oil-in-water Pickering emulsions could be obtained depending on the shear rate employed for homogenisation. Further investigation suggested that high shear rates lead to in situ inversion of the initial hydrophobic PSMA14-PNMEP49 spheres to form hydrophilic PNMEP49-PSMA14 spheres.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of cationic sterically stabilized diblock copolymer nanoparticles via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) using a RAFT aqueous dispersion polymerization formulation. The cationic steric stabilizer is a macromolecular chain-transfer agent (macro-CTA) based on quaternized poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PQDMA), and the hydrophobic core-forming block is based on poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PHPMA). The effect of varying synthesis parameters such as the salt concentration, solids content, relative block composition, and cationic charge density has been studied. In the absence of salt, self-assembly is problematic because of the strong repulsion between the highly cationic PQDMA stabilizer chains. However, in the presence of salt this problem can be overcome by reducing the charge density within the coronal stabilizer layer by either (i) statistically copolymerizing QDMA monomer with a nonionic comonomer (e.g., glycerol monomethacrylate, GMA) or (ii) using a binary mixture of a PQDMA macro-CTA and a poly(glycerol monomethacrylate) (PGMA) macro-CTA. These cationic diblock copolymer nanoparticles were analyzed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and aqueous electrophoresis. NMR studies suggest that the HPMA polymerization is complete within 2 h at 70 °C. Depending on the specific reaction conditions, either spherical, wormlike or vesicular nanoparticles can be prepared with tunable cationic surface charge.

Abstract
Suzuki-Miyaura polycondensation of 2-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)-7-bromo-9,9-dioctylfluorene in aqueous miniemulsion with only two equivalents of NaOH as a base yields colloidally stable nanoparticles of polyfluorene with Mn ca. 2 × 104 g mol-1 and particle sizes of 40-85 nm, depending on the surfactant concentration. Polymerization in the presence of CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots affords hybrid nanoparticles of nonaggregated quantum dots, in particular nanoparticles composed of a single quantum dot embedded in a polyfluorene shell. Microphotoluminescence spectroscopy on single hybrid particles reveals an enhanced photostability of the quantum dots and indicates an efficient Förster energy transfer from the polyfluorene shell to the quantum dot.

Abstract
Charge detection mass spectrometry (CD-MS) combined with electrospray ionization was used to determine, in a direct way and for the first time, the molar mass of self-assembled amphiphilic block copolymer nanoobjects prepared via living radical emulsion polymerization. CD-MS supplies enough data for calculating statistically significant measurements of the mass of particles in the megadalton to gigadalton range and their resulting mass distribution.

Abstract
The peptide-mediated functionalization of inorganic particle surfaces is demonstrated on gadolinium oxide (GdO) particles, revealing specific means to functionalize nano- or microparticles. Phage display screening is exploited to select 12mer peptides, which exhibit sequence-specific adhesion onto surfaces of GdO particles. These peptide adhesion domains are exploited to effectively decorate GdO particles with fluorescently labeled poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), proving to result in a stable surface modification as shown by significant reduction of protein adsorption by 80%, compared to nonfunctionalized particles. Peptide adhesion and stability of the noncovalent coating are investigated by adsorption/elution experiments and Langmuir isotherms. Fluorescence microscopy, contact angle, and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) measurements confirmed the sequence specificity of the interactions by comparing adhesion sequences with scrambled peptide sequences. Noncovalent, but specific modification of inorganic particle surfaces represents a generic strategy to modulate functionality and function of nano- or microparticle surfaces.

Abstract
Water-soluble macroalkoxyamines are shown to be particularly well-suited initiators for nitroxide-mediated emulsion polymerization. They lead to the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers that self-assemble in situ into well-defined nanoobject morphologies, in agreement with the principles of polymerization-induced micellization. Depending on the molar mass of the hydrophobic block, the formed nanoparticles are hairy spherical micelles, nanofibers, or vesicles. The nanofibers are the most intriguing and spectacular structure and strongly affect the physicochemical properties of the aqueous dispersions.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of anionic sterically stabilized diblock copolymer nanoparticles via polymerization-induced self-assembly using a RAFT aqueous dispersion polymerization formulation. The anionic steric stabilizer is a macromolecular chain-transfer agent (macro-CTA) based on poly(potassium 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PKSPMA), and the hydrophobic core-forming block is based on poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PHPMA). The effect of varying synthesis parameters such as the salt concentration, solids content, relative block composition, and anionic charge density has been studied. In the absence of salt, self-assembly is problematic when using a PKSPMA stabilizer because of lateral repulsion between highly charged anionic chains. However, in the presence of added salt this problem can be overcome by reducing the charge density within the coronal stabilizer layer by either (i) statistically copolymerizing the KSPMA monomer with a nonionic comonomer (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, HEMA) or (ii) using a binary mixture of a PKSPMA macro-CTA and a poly(glycerol monomethacrylate) (PGMA) macro-CTA. These diblock copolymer nanoparticles were analyzed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and aqueous electrophoresis. NMR studies suggest that the HPMA polymerization is complete within 2 h at 70 °C, and DMF GPC analysis confirms that the resulting diblock copolymers have relatively low polydispersities (M(w)/M(n) < 1.30). NMR also suggests a significant degree of hydration for the core-forming PHPMA chains. Depending on the specific reaction conditions, a series of spherical nanoparticles with mean diameters ranging from 50 to 200 nm with tunable anionic surface charge can be prepared. If a binary mixture of anionic and nonionic macro-CTAs is utilized, then it is also possible to access a vesicular morphology.

Abstract
The syntheses of amphiphilic block copolymers are successfully performed in water by chain extension of hydrophilic macromolecules with styrene at 80 °C. The employed strategy is a one-pot procedure in which poly(acrylic acid), poly(methacrylic acid) or poly(methacrylic acid-co-poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate) macroRAFTs are first formed in water using 4-cyano-4-thiothiopropylsulfanyl pentanoic acid (CTPPA) as a chain transfer agent. The resulting macroRAFTs are then directly used without further purification for the RAFT polymerization of styrene in water in the same reactor. This simple and straightforward strategy leads to a very good control of the resulting amphiphilic block copolymers.
