Multicomponent Polymerization of Alkynes

Clusterization-Triggered Color-Tunable Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from 1,4-Dihydropyridine-Based Polymers

A series of poly(1,4-dihydropyridine)s (PDHPs) were successfully synthesized via one-pot metal-free multicomponent polymerization of diacetylenic esters, benzaldehyde, and aniline derivatives. These PDHPs without traditional luminescent units were endowed with tunable triplet energy levels by through-space conjugation from the formation of different cluster sizes. The large and compact clusters can effectively extend the phosphorescence wavelength. The triplet excitons can be stabilized by using benzophenone as a rigid matrix to achieve room-temperature phosphorescence. The nonconjugated polymeric clusters can show a phosphorescence emission up to 645 nm. A combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering was conducted for insight into the structural information on formed clusters in the host matrix melt. Moreover, both the fluorescence and phosphorescence emission can be easily tuned by the variation of the excitation wavelength, the concentration, and the molecular weight of the guest polymers. This work provides a unique insight for designing polymeric host-guest systems and a new strategy for the development of long wavelength phosphorescence materials.

Catalyst-Free Four-Component Polymerization of Propiolic Acids, Benzylamines, Organoboronic Acids, and Formaldehyde toward Functional Poly(propargylamine)s

Multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) are a group of fascinating polymer synthesis approaches that are developed rapidly in the recent decade. As a popular alkyne-based MCP, the A³ -polycouplings of alkynes, aldehydes, and amines are developed for the synthesis of poly(propargylamine)s under the catalysis of metal catalysts. In this work, through the design of carboxylic acid group-activated alkyne monomers, a catalyst-free, four-component polymerization of propiolic acids, benzylamines, organoboronic acids, and formaldehyde is reported under mild condition at 45 °C in dichloroethane. This four-component polymerization is applicable to different monomer structures, which can afford seven poly(propargylamine)s with up to 94% yields and molecular weights of up to 13 900 g mol^-1 . Moreover, the poly(propargylamine)s demonstrate good solubility and processibility, high thermal stability and light refractivity, unique photophysical property, and so on. The simple monomers, mild condition, low cost, high efficiency, and procedure simplicity of this catalyst-free four-component polymerization demonstrates an elegant example of functional polymer synthesis.

Synthesis of Functional Poly(propargyl imine)s by Multicomponent Polymerizations of Bromoarenes, Isonitriles, and Alkynes

Here we reported a versatile and multicomponent polymerization (MCP) approach that enabled the synthesis of functional poly(propargyl imine)s with well-defined structures and high molecular weight (M_w up to 38 200) in excellent yields (up to 93%) from readily accessible monomers of dibromoarenes, isonitriles, and diynes. This MCP had the advantages of simple operation, wide substrate scope, and mild reaction conditions. The resulting polymers possessed good solubility and showed high thermal stability and refractive indices. The tetraphenylethene-containing polymer displayed a phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission and could respond to various acidic vapors.

Dual Sequence Control of Uniform Macromolecules through Consecutive Single Addition by Selective Passerini Reaction

The selective Passerini reactions of 4-formylbenzoic acid and 4-isocyanobenzoic acid with aliphatic isocyanides and aldehydes were utilized to synthesize sequence-defined uniform macromolecules. Our strategy does not involve any protecting groups or reactive group transformation steps and allows direct and consecutive propagation of sequence in each step. Introduction of diverse side groups by using different aliphatic components provided a range of sequence-defined uniform macromolecules in high yield and gram scale. The strategy also allows further Passerini self-coupling or cross-coupling of the formed sequences with other small molecules, affording polymers with up to 5098.3 Da and 20 side groups. Thus, this strategy will show promise for more efficient synthesis of new sequence-defined macromolecules.
