Abstract
In this communication, we report the first evidence of slow-spin relaxation of a low-spin FeIII carborane complex. Iron S = 1/2 complexes showing such behaviour are particularly appealing as qubit candidates because they fulfil some of the main requirements to reach long decoherence times, such as moderate magnetic anisotropy, small spin, metal element mainly with zero-nuclear spin and furthermore, large versatility to introduce chemical modifications.

Abstract
Stoichiometric oxidation of phosphines with water and ferrocenium(III) cation as the oxygen atom source and the oxidizing reagent, respectively, was achieved in acetonitrile under visible-light irradiation by using 2,6-lutidine as the proton acceptor. The reaction required light irradiation, under which fluorescence was observed for the acetonitrile solution of the ferrocenium(III) cation.

Abstract
The half-sandwich complex [Cp'Fe(μ-I)]2 (1; Cp' = η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2) is cleaved when heated in toluene to form a cation-anion pair [{Cp'Fe(η6-toluene)}+{Cp'FeI2}-] (2), in which the two Fe(ii) atoms adopt different spin states, i.e., a low-spin (S = 0) and a high-spin (S = 2) configuration. Upon oxidation of 1 with C2H4I2, the thermally stable 15VE species [Cp'FeI2] (3) can be isolated, in which the Fe(iii) atom adopts an intermediate spin (S = 3/2) configuration. Complex 3 is an excellent starting material for further functionalizations and it reacts with Mg(CH2SiMe3)2 to form the unprecedented Fe(iii) (S = 3/2) bis(alkyl) complex [Cp'Fe(CH2SiMe3)2] (4). The respective spin states of complexes 2-4 are confirmed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, zero-field 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and solid-state magnetic susceptibility measurements. In contrast to the related 14VE high-spin (S = 2) Fe(ii) alkyl species [Cp'FeCH(SiMe3)2], which resists the reaction with H2 as a consequence of a spin-induced reaction barrier, complex 4 reacts cleanly with H2 (8 bar) in cyclohexane to yield iron hydrides [{Cp'Fe}2(μ-H)3] (5) and [Cp'Fe(μ-H)2]2 (6) in a 1 : 4 ratio. However, when the hydrogenation of 4 is carried out in benzene, a green 19VE [Cp'Fe(η6-C6H6)] (A) intermediate is formed, which dimerizes to the bis(cyclohexadienyl)-bridged product [(Cp'Fe)2(μ2-η5:η5-C12H12)] (7). Further evidence for the intermediacy of [Cp'Fe(η6-C6H6)] (A) was gathered by X-band EPR and UV/vis spectroscopy. Interestingly, attempts to oxidize 7 with AgSbF6 proceeded via C-C bond cleavage instead of metal oxidation to form [Cp'Fe(C6H6)][SbF6] (8).

Abstract
The stability and electronic structures of the new sandwich compounds M(CrB6H6)2 (M = Cr, Mn(+), Fe(2+)) are investigated by density functional theory. All the investigated sandwich complexes are in D(6d) symmetry and all of them are thermodynamically stable according to the large HOMO-LUMO gap, binding energy, vertical ionization potential and vertical electron affinity analyses, as well as Fe(C5H5)2 and Cr(C6H6)2, following the 18-electron principle. The natural bond orbital, detailed molecular orbitals and adaptive natural density partitioning analyses suggest that the spd-π interaction plays an important role in the sandwich compounds. This work challenges the traditional chemical bonding of the inorganic metal compound, investigates first the bonding style of the d atom orbital interacting with the π MO which was formed by p-d atomic orbitals, and indicates that the metal-doped borane ring can also be an ideal type π-electron donor ligand to stabilize the transition metal.

Abstract
The radical pair recombination of an intramolecular electron-transfer system containing a transition metal moiety has been addressed by femtosecond spectroscopy. The radical pair is formed by ultrafast electron transfer (90 fs) from a ferrocene residue to a photoexcited Nile blue moiety. Its recombination proceeds on the picosecond time scale in a multiexponential fashion. The kinetic pattern is a manifestation of spin processes competing with electron transfer. Magnetic field effects on these kinetics allow one to disentangle the two contributions. Their temperature dependencies yield the activation parameters of the two processes. The discussion focuses on the mechanism of electron spin relaxation. Strong evidence for the Orbach/Kivelson mechanism will be given.

Abstract
Threshold photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy has been used to investigate the dissociation kinetics of the cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl ion, CpMn(CO)(3)(+). The ionization energy of CpMn(CO)(3) was measured from the threshold photoelectron spectrum to be 7.69 +/- 0.02 eV. The dissociation of the CpMn(CO)(3)(+) ion proceeds by the sequential loss of three CO molecules. The first and third CO loss reactions were observed to be slow (lifetimes in the microsecond range). By simulating the resulting asymmetric time-of-flight peak shapes and breakdown diagram, 0 K onsets for three product ions were determined to be 8.80 +/- 0.04, 9.43 +/- 0.04, and 10.51 +/- 0.06 eV, respectively. Combined with the adiabatic ionization energy, the three successive Mn-CO bond energies in the CpMn(CO)(3)(+) were found to be alternating with values of 1.11 +/- 0.04, 0.63 +/- 0.04, and 1.08 +/- 0.06 eV, respectively. Using a scaled theoretical Cp-Mn(+) bond energy of 3.10 +/- 0.10 eV and the combined results from theory and experiment, the 298 K gas-phase heat of formation of CpMn(CO)(3) is suggested to be -419 +/- 15 kJ/mol. Based on this value, the 298 K heats of formation of CpMn(CO)(3)(+), CpMn(CO)(2)(+), CpMnCO(+), and CpMn(+) are 325 +/- 15, 546 +/- 15, 719 +/- 15, and 938 +/- 15 kJ/mol, respectively. By scaling theoretical calculated neutral bond energies with the experimental information derived in this study, the successive Mn-CO bond energies were estimated to be 1.88, 1.10, and 1.03 eV, respectively, while the Cp-Mn bond energy was found to be 2.16 eV. Comparison between the quantum chemical calculations and experimental values shows that the loss of CO groups follows the lowest energy adiabatic path, in which electronic spin on the metal center is not conserved.

Abstract
The reaction of Fe(II)(C5Me5)(C5H5), FeCpCp, with percyano acceptors, A [A = C4(CN)6 (hexacyanobutadiene), TCNQF4 (perfluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane), and DDQ (2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone)], results in formation of 1:1 charge-transfer salts of [Fe(III)CpCp]*]*+[A]*- composition. With A = TCNQ (7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane) a 1:2 electron-transfer salt with FeCpCp forms. With A = TCNE (tetracyanoethylene) a pair of 1:1 salts as well as a pair of 2:3 salts of [FeCpCp]2[TCNE]3.S (S = CH2Cl2, THF) have been isolated and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [FeCpCp][TCNE] consists of parallel 1-D.D(*+)A(*-)D(*+)A(*-)D(*+)A(*-). chains, while [FeCpCp][TCNE].MeCN has a herringbone array of D(*+)A2(2-)D(*+) dimers separated by solvent molecules. Although each [TCNE](-) is disordered, the diamagnetic [TCNE]2(2-) dimer is structurally different from those observed earlier with an intradimer separation of 2.79 A. The [TCNE](-) in the 2:3 [FeCpCp]2[TCNE]3.S exists as an eclipsed diamagnetic [TCNE]2(2-) dimer with an intradimer ethylene C.C separation of 2.833 and 2.903 A for the CH2Cl2- and THF-containing materials, respectively. The bond distances and angles for all the cations are essentially equivalent, and the distances are essentially equivalent to those previously reported for [FeCp2](*+) and [FeCp2](*+) cations. The average Fe-C5H5-ring and Fe-C5Me5-ring centroid distances are 1.71 and 1.69 A, respectively, which are 0.05 A longer than reported for Fe(II)CpCp. The one-electron reduction potential for Fe(II)CpCp is 0.11 V (vs SCE). The 5 K EPR of [FeCpCp](*+)[BF4](-) exhibits an axially symmetric powder pattern with g(parallel) = 4.36 and g(perpendicular) = 1.24, and the EPR parameters are essentially identical to those reported for ferrocenium and decamethylferrocenium. The high-temperature magnetic susceptibility for polycrystalline samples of these complexes can be fit by the Curie-Weiss law, chi = C/(T - theta), with low theta values and mu(eff) values from 2.08 to 3.43 mu(B), suggesting that the polycrystalline samples measured had varying degrees of orientation. [FeCpCp][TCNE] exhibits the highest effective moment of 3.43 mu(B)/Fe and weak ferromagnetic coupling, as evidenced from the theta of 3.3 K; however, unexpectedly, it does not magnetically order above 2 K. The formation of the four phases comprising FeCpCp and TCNE emphasizes the diversity of materials that may form and the present inability to predict neither solid-state compositions nor structure types.

Abstract
The photochemically induced arene dissociation reaction of the widely used cationic photoinitiator complex [CpFe-(eta 6-isopropylbenzene)]PF6 has quantitatively been investigated in several different solvents at 293 K as a function of excitation wavelength at 355, 458, 488, 514, 633, and 683 nm. The complex was excited into the lowest-lying singlet ligand field manifold (355-514 nm) and directly into the corresponding lowest-lying triplet ligand field state (633, 683 nm). Absolute photochemical quantum efficiency (phi cr) results reveal that the system exhibits a strong excitation wavelength dependence in each investigated solvent and that the reaction is extremely efficient in the UV and visible regions. The wavelength dependence also reveals that the photochemistry does not occur solely from the lowest-lying ligand field triplet excited state. New insights in terms of both photophysical and mechanistic aspects of this system are obtained from the quantitative photochemical results.
