Resonance Character of Hydrogen-bonding Interactions in Water and Other H-bonded Species

Hydrogen bonding underlies the structure of water and all biochemical processes in aqueous medium. Analysis of modern ab initio wave functions in terms of natural bond orbitals (NBOs) strongly suggests the resonance-type "charge transfer" (CT) character of H-bonding, contrary to the widely held classical-electrostatic viewpoint that underlies current molecular dynamics (MD) modeling technology. Quantum cluster equilibrium (QCE) theory provides an alternative ab initio-based picture of liquid water that predicts proton-ordered two-coordinate H-bonding patterns, dramatically different from the ice-like picture of electrostatics-based MD simulations. Recent X-ray absorption and Raman scattering experiments of Nilsson and co-workers confirm the microstructural two-coordinate picture of liquid water. We show how such cooperative "unsaturated" ring/chain topologies arise naturally from the fundamental resonance-CT nature of B:cdots, three dots, centeredHA hydrogen bonding, which is expressed in NBO language as n(B)-->sigma(AH)(*) intermolecular delocalization from a filled lone pair n(B) of the Lewis base (B:) into the proximal antibond sigma(AH)(*) of the Lewis acid (HA). Stabilizing n(O)-->sigma(OH)(*) orbital delocalization, equivalent to partial mixing of resonance structures H(2)O:cdots, three dots, centeredHOH H(3)O(+) cdots, three dots, centered(-):OH, is thereby seen to be the electronic origin of general enthalpic and entropic propensities that favor relatively small cyclic clusters such as water pentamers W(5c) in the QCE liquid phase. We also discuss the thermodynamically competitive three-coordinate clusters (e.g., icosahedral water buckyballs, W(24)), which appear to play a role in hydrophobic solvation phenomena. We conclude with suggestions for incorporating resonance-CT aspects of H-bonding into empirical MD simulation potentials in a computationally tractable manner.

Relativistic double group spinor representations of nonrigid molecules

The character theory of relativistic double group spinor representations is developed in order to represent the total rovibronic states of nonrigid molecules. It is shown that the double groups can be represented in terms of wreath products and powerful matrix cycle type generators that are used to construct their character tables. It is shown that these tables are of use when spin-orbit coupling is included in the Hamiltonian even for molecules containing lighter atoms. Applications to nonrigid molecules such as Tl2H4/Tl2H4+ are considered. It is shown that the tunneling splittings and the nuclear spin statistical weights can be obtained for such species using the character tables thus constructed. The spinor double groups of several other molecules such as hexamethyl dilead and heavy weakly bound clusters such as (PoH2)4 are also considered.

HIGH RESOLUTION SPECTROSCOPY IN THE GAS PHASE: Even Large Molecules Have Well-Defined Shapes

▪ Abstract  A review of recent high-resolution microwave, infrared, and optical spectroscopy experiments demonstrates that remarkable progress has been made in the past 20 years in determining the equilibrium geometries of large polyatomic molecules and their clusters in the gas phase, and how these geometries change when the photon is absorbed. A special focus is on the dynamical information that can be obtained from such studies, particularly of electronically excited states.

The Vibrational Spectroscopy and Dynamics of Weakly Bound Neutral Complexes

A growing number of binary and tertiary van der Waals and hydrogen-bonded complexes are being studied by means of near-infrared laser spectroscopy. Studies of this type have generated a wealth of detailed structural and dynamical information that provides exacting tests of the corresponding theoretical methods. An additional incentive for the investigation of such clusters arises from the fact that they may be considered as intermediates between the gas and condensed phases of matter. As a result, these systems represent a fertile meeting ground for researchers from both fields and can often be studied with a variety of methods.
