Recent Advances in Alkane Dehydrogenation Catalyzed by Pincer Complexes

Platinum thiolate complexes supported by PBP and POCOP pincer ligands as efficient catalysts for the hydrosilylation of carbonyl compounds

Diphosphino-boryl-based PBP pincer platinum thiolate complexes, [Pt(SR){B(NCH₂P^tBu₂)₂-1,2-C₆H₄}] (R = H, 1a; Ph, 1b), and benzene-based bisphosphinite POCOP pincer platinum thiolate complexes, [Pt(SR)(^tBu₂PO)₂-1,3-C₆H₃] (R = H, 2a; Ph, 2b), were prepared and fully characterized by multinuclear NMR, X-ray crystallography, HRMS and elemental analyses. The application of these complexes in the catalytic hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones was investigated. It was found that these platinum thiolate complexes are efficient catalysts for the hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones at 65-75 °C. Comparatively, the PBP complexes are more active than the corresponding POCOP complexes. Both phenylsilane and polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) can be used as silyl reagents. The expected alcohols were obtained in good to excellent yields after the basic hydrolysis of the hydrosilylation products and many functional groups were not affected. With turnover frequencies (TOFs) of up to 67 000 h^-1, the present catalytic system represents the most effective platinum catalytic system for the hydrosilylation of carbonyl compounds. The reactions were likely catalysed by the in situ generated platinum hydride species.

Ligand-free Guerbet-type reactions in air catalyzed by in situ formed complexes of base metal salt cobaltous chloride

Inexpensive, earth-abundant & environmentally benign CoCl2 efficiently catalyses the β-alkylation of alcohol in unprecedented yields (89%) & turnovers (8900). Mechanistic studies are indicative of in situ generated homogeneous molecular Co catalysts.

The Stability of Diphosphino-Boryl PBP Pincer Backbone: PBP to POP Ligand Hydrolysis

Since moisture may frequently be present in many solvents, it is important to know the reactivity of a catalyst against water for catalytic reactions. In order to explore the stability and understand the transformation process of diphosphino-boryl-based PBP pincer platform, [PdCl{B(NCH₂ P^t Bu₂ )₂ -o-C₆ H₄ }] (1) was treated with PdCl₂ , HB(NCH₂ PPh₂ )₂ -o-C₆ H₄ was reacted with [PdCl₂ (cod)] (cod=cyclo-octa-1,5-diene) and [Pd₂ (dba)₃ ] (dba=dibenzylideneacetone), respectively, in the presence of water. Some novel palladium POP complexes, [Pd₂ Cl₂ (μ-Cl){μ-κ³ -P,O,P-OB(NCH₂ P^t Bu₂ )₂ -o-C₆ H₄ }] (2 a), [Pd₄ (μ-Cl)₂ (μ-O)₂ {μ-κ³ -P,O,P-OB(NCH₂ PPh₂ )₂ -o-C₆ H₄ }₂ ] (2 b), [Pd₂ {μ-κ⁴ -P,P,P,P-O(B(NCH₂ PPh₂ )₂ -o-C₆ H₄ )₂ }{μ-κ² -P,P-(NHCH₂ PPh₂ )₂ -o-C₆ H₄ }] (3), were obtained. It was found that the PBP pincer backbone can easily be converted into a POP backbone in the presence of water. From the crystal structures of the resultant palladium complexes, possible pincer backbone transformation pathways were discussed.

Catalytic oxidations by dehydrogenation of alkanes, alcohols and amines with defined (non)-noble metal pincer complexes

The present review highlights the latest developments in the field of transition metal-catalysed oxidations, in particular C–C–, C–O– and C–N-bond dehydrogenations.

The Reactivity of Mercapto Groups against Boron Hydrides in Pincer Ligated Nickel Mercapto Complexes

Several pincer ligated nickel mercapto complexes, [2,6-(R₂ PCH₂ )₂ C₆ H₃ ]NiSH (R=tBu, 1 a; iPr, 1 b), [2,6-(R₂ PO)₂ C₆ H₃ ]NiSH (R=tBu, 2 a; iPr, 2 b) and [4-MeOCO-2,6-(tBu₂ PO)₂ C₆ H₂ ]NiSH (3 a), were synthesized and fully characterized. The reactivity of the mercapto groups against boron hydrides and organic bases was investigated. It was found that the mercapto groups are difficult to be deprotonated by boron hydrides or organic bases. The treatment of complex 2 a or 2 b with an excess amount of catecholborane (HBcat) afforded the corresponding pincer ligated nickel borohydride complexes and the HBcat degradation product. The treatment of complex 1 a, 2 a or 2 b with an excess amount of BH₃ ⋅THF produced the corresponding nickel borohydride species and the S-bridged triborane species THF⋅BH₂ -μ₂ -S(B₂ H₅ ) (5). No reactions between these complexes and organic bases were observed. DFT calculations were carried out to understand this reactivity and get mechanistic insights into the reactions.

A reaction of [2,6-(tBu2PO)2C6H3]NiSCH2Ph with BH3·THF: borane mediated C–S bond cleavage

C–S bond cleavage of the thiolato ligand of [2,6-(^tBu₂PO)₂C₆H₃]NiSCH₂Ph mediated by BH₃ as a suitable model for the transition metal catalyzed C–S bond activation of mercaptans.

Catalytic dehydrogenative aromatization of cyclohexanones and cyclohexenones

Prompted by the scant attention paid by published literature reviews to the comprehensive catalytic dehydrogenative aromatization of cyclohexa(e)nones, this review describes recent methods developed to-date involving transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative aromatization and metal-free strategies for the transformation of cyclohexa(e)nones to substituted phenols.

Synthesis and coordination chemistry of new asymmetric donor/acceptor pincer ligands, 1,3-C6H4(CH2PtBu(Rf))2 (Rf = CF3, C2F5)

Syntheses of new asymmetric pincer precursors 1,3-C₆H₄{CH₂P(^tBu,X)}₂ (^tBu,XPCPH; X = Cl, SiMe₃, OPh) and a new class of hybrid donor/acceptor pincer ligands 1,3-C₆H₄{CH₂P(^tBu,R_f)}₂ (^tBu,RfPCPH; R_f = CF₃, C₂F₅) are reported.

A new and selective cycle for dehydrogenation of linear and cyclic alkanes under mild conditions using a base metal

Selectively converting linear alkanes to α-olefins under mild conditions is a highly desirable transformation given the abundance of alkanes as well as the use of olefins as building blocks in the chemical community. Until now, this reaction has been primarily the remit of noble-metal catalysts, despite extensive work showing that base-metal alkylidenes can mediate the reaction in a stoichiometric fashion. Here, we show how the presence of a hydrogen acceptor, such as the phosphorus ylide, when combined with the alkylidene complex (PNP)Ti=CH^tBu(CH₃) (PNP=N[2-P(CHMe₂)₂-4-methylphenyl]₂^-), catalyses the dehydrogenation of cycloalkanes to cyclic alkenes, and linear alkanes with chain lengths of C₄ to C₈ to terminal olefins under mild conditions. This Article represents the first example of a homogeneous and selective alkane dehydrogenation reaction using a base-metal titanium catalyst. We also propose a unique mechanism for the transfer dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons to olefins and discuss a complete cycle based on a combined experimental and computational study.

Tryptophan/copper-catalyzed aromatization reaction of chiral cyclohexanones to phenols

By merging organocatalysis with copper catalysis, a highly efficient stereospecific approach for the synthesis of chiral phenols from cyclohexanones has been developed for the first time. The aromatization reaction proceeds through the in situ formation of enone intermediates and further subsequent bromination/dehydrobromination reactions. And a series of functionalized phenol derivatives are obtained in good yields (up to 89%) and good to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee).

A long-tethered (P–B–P)-pincer ligand: synthesis, complexation, and application to catalytic dehydrogenation of alkanes

A new long-tethered boron-containing (P–B–P)-pincer ligand has been synthesized. This ligand was introduced to Ir to form (P–B–P)Ir(H)Cl complex. Subsequent reaction with nBuLi led to the formation of dihydride complex (P–B–P)Ir(H)₂. Both complexes were found to be moderately active for the catalytic dehydrogenation of alkanes.
