Mixture Effect on the Dilatation Rheology of Asphaltenes-Laden Interfaces

Asphaltenes are a solubility class of crude oils comprising polyaromatic and heterocyclic molecules with different interfacial activities. The previously neglected effects of compositional mixture on dilatational rheology are discussed in the light of diffusional relaxation models. It is demonstrated that the reported deviations from the Lucassen-van den Tempel model for a single-component solution could largely originate from a distribution in adsorption coefficients within the asphaltenes class. This particularly applies to the peculiar gel point rheology previously ascribed to asphaltenes cross-linking at the interface. Furthermore, an extensive bibliographical review shows that asphaltenes dilatational rheology data always verify the main features of diffusional relaxation, including a decrease in modulus at high bulk concentrations and phase shift values always lower than 45°. Using diffusional relaxation concepts, the reanalysis of the most extensive dataset so far confirmed recently published studies, showing that asphaltenes exhibit a unique equation of state (EOS) irrespective of adsorption conditions. This EOS proves to be very similar for bitumen and petroleum asphaltenes. Finally, a numerical application of a binary diffusional model proved efficient to capture both dynamic interfacial tension and dilatational rheology, with the same parameters. It appears that a minority of asphaltenes (less than 10%) have a much stronger interfacial activity than the bulk of them, as previously demonstrated by fractionation. These results open up the need for a reinterpretation of the physical mechanisms of asphaltenes adsorption in terms of classical amphiphilic behavior, with a potential impact on emulsion breaking and enhanced oil recovery strategies.

Terthiophene derivatives of cholesterol-based molecular gels and their sensing applications

Three novel terthiophene derivatives of cholesterol (TtGC, TtLPC, TtDPC), of which the two building blocks are linked by a structure of glycine, l-phenylalanine, or d-phenylalanine, respectively, were designed and prepared, and their gelation behaviors in 26 liquids were tested. It was demonstrated that the compounds show different gelation abilities with the variation of the linker structures even though the variation is small. FTIR, (1)H NMR, and UV-vis measurements revealed that intermolecular hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interaction are the main driving forces for the gel formation. As for TtDPC, CD and AFM measurements revealed that it aggregated into chiral structures of left-helical feature in benzene. Importantly, the morphologies of the gel networks could be subtly adjusted via alteration of the gelator concentration. Considering the brightness in fluorescence and the unique micro/nanostructures of the gel networks, a fluorescent film (film 1) was fabricated by simple dip-coating of TtDPC/benzene solution (before gelation) onto a glass plate surface. Fluorescent studies demonstrated that the film is photochemically unstable. Two hours UV irradiation of the film results in film 2, which is almost fluorescent silence. However, the presence of HAc vapor or the vapors of some other volatile organic liquids induces new fluorescence emission, laying the foundation for creating a turn-on type fluorescent sensor of the organic vapors. Furthermore, as a new type of low-molecular-mass gelators (LMMGs), of which oligothiophene was employed as a building block, the present study has provided a possibility to explore the photo-/electronic applications of oligothiophenes via a molecular gel strategy.

Advances in supramolecular electronics - from randomly self-assembled nanostructures to addressable self-organized interconnects

Supramolecular organic electronics rests on the use of bottom-up chemical self-assembly processes in order to design conducting components on the 5-100 nm scale. The challenges in this field are both the construction of 1D-nanostructures displaying optimized transport properties and their precise connections to electrodes. The present Research News highlights important advances in such materials regarding their electrical performances, from semiconductors to organic metals, but also regarding their processability. In particular, by externally controlling light-responsive supramolecular polymerization processes, and by using appropriate methods of casting with an applied electric field, it becomes possible to pre-determine the accurate positioning of organic interconnects within patterned nano-circuitry. These strategies using external stimuli to obtain addressability, thus hold promising alternatives to other conducting materials such as carbon nanotubes for further technological applications in nanosciences.
