Aminosilane-Assisted Electrodeposition of Gold Nanodendrites and Their Catalytic Properties

A promising alternative route for the synthesis of three-dimensional Au dendrites was developed by direct electrodeposition from a solution of HAuCl4 containing 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS). Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry were used to study the interaction of APTS in electrolyte. The effect of APTS on the formation of the hierarchical structure of Au dendrites was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, rotating disk electrode, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and quartz crystal microbalance. The growth directions of the trunks and branches of the Au dendrites can be controlled by sweep-potential electrodeposition to obtain more regular structures. The efficacy of as-synthesised Au dendrites was demonstrated in the enhanced electro-catalytic activity to methanol electro-oxidation and the high sensitivity of glucose detection, which have potential applications in direct-methanol fuel cells and non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose biosensors, respectively.

Structure and energetics of hydrogen-bonded networks of methanol on close packed transition metal surfaces

Methanol is a versatile chemical feedstock, fuel source, and energy storage material. Many reactions involving methanol are catalyzed by transition metal surfaces, on which hydrogen-bonded methanol overlayers form. As with water, the structure of these overlayers is expected to depend on a delicate balance of hydrogen bonding and adsorbate-substrate bonding. In contrast to water, however, relatively little is known about the structures methanol overlayers form and how these vary from one substrate to another. To address this issue, herein we analyze the hydrogen bonded networks that methanol forms as a function of coverage on three catalytically important surfaces, Au(111), Cu(111), and Pt(111), using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory. We investigate the effect of intermolecular interactions, surface coverage, and adsorption energies on molecular assembly and compare the results to more widely studied water networks on the same surfaces. Two main factors are shown to direct the structure of methanol on the surfaces studied: the surface coverage and the competition between the methanol-methanol and methanol-surface interactions. Additionally, we report a new chiral form of buckled hexamer formed by surface bound methanol that maximizes the interactions between methanol monomers by sacrificing interactions with the surface. These results serve as a direct comparison of interaction strength, assembly, and chirality of methanol networks on Au(111), Cu(111), and Pt(111) which are catalytically relevant for methanol oxidation, steam reforming, and direct methanol fuel cells.

Pt-Ru/CeO2/carbon nanotube nanocomposites: an efficient electrocatalyst for direct methanol fuel cells

Pt-Ru/CeO(2)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) electrocatalysts were prepared using a rapid sonication-facilitated deposition method and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and voltammetry. Morphological characterization by TEM revealed that CeO(2) nanoparticles (NPs) were in intimate contact with Pt-Ru NPs, and both were highly dispersed on the exteriors of nanotubes with a small size and a very narrow size distribution. Compared with the Pt-Ru/MWNT and Pt/MWNT electrocatalysts, the as-prepared Pt-Ru/CeO(2)/MWNT exhibited a significantly improved electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and a remarkably enhanced activity toward methanol oxidation. The effects of the Pt-Ru loading and the Pt-to-Ru molar ratio on the electrocatalytic activity of Pt-Ru/CeO(2)/MWNT for methanol oxidation were investigated. We found that a maximum activity toward methanol oxidation reached at the 10 wt % of Pt-Ru loading and 1:1 of Pt-to-Ru ratio. Moreover, the role of CeO(2) in the catalysts for the enhancement of methanol oxidation was discussed in terms of both bifunctional mechanism and electronic effects.

Effect of reduction temperature on the preparation and characterization of Pt-Ru nanoparticles on multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) supported platinum-ruthenium (Pt-Ru) catalysts were prepared by impregnation-reduction using an ethanolic solution of H2PtCl6 and RuCl3. The effect of reduction temperatures on particle size, surface area and their relationship to the electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for the catalyst characterization. XRD analysis showed that the PtRu/ CNT catalysts possibly consist of separate Pt and Ru phases. XPS analysis showed that the catalysts contain hydrous ruthenium oxide in addition to Pt and Ru metal and oxide species. The electrocatalytic activities of the catalysts were investigated in half-cell experiments using cyclic voltammetry, CO stripping voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the catalyst reduced at a temperature of 350 degrees C had the largest electrochemical surface area, lowest charge transfer resistance and the highest electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation. The superior catalytic activity is discussed based on the presence of appropriate amount of hydrated Ru oxide.
