Always returning: feedback and sensory processing in visual cortex and thalamus

Feedback projections are an integral part of the mammalian visual system. Although it is tempting to relegate them to a subsidiary role in visual processing, because their supposed latency and lag might appear to be unfavourable for an involvement in fast processing, this is a dangerous simplification. Certainly for the world in motion, feedback from higher motion areas can influence the transfer of ascending input when, or even before, the input arrives. Here, we consider the circuit formed by layer 6 feedback cells in the visual cortex and how this straddles the retinothalamic and thalamocortical transfer of visual input. We discuss its links to feedback from the cortical motion area MT (V5), and suggest that motion perception involves a dynamic interplay between MT, V1 and the thalamus. Orientation and direction selectivity of neurons in V1 of alert monkeys: functional relationships and laminar distributions

We studied orientation selectivity in V1 of alert monkeys and its relationship to other physiological parameters and to anatomical organization. Single neurons were stimulated with drifting bars or with sinusoidal gratings while compensating for eye position. Orientation selectivity based on spike counts was quantified by circular variance and by the bandwidth of the orientation tuning curve. The circular variance distribution was bimodal, suggesting groups with low and with high selectivity. Orientation selectivity was clearly correlated with spontaneous activity, classical receptive field (CRF) size and the strength of surround suppression. Laminar distributions of neuronal properties were distinct. Neurons in the output layers 2/3, 4B and 5 had low spontaneous activity, small CRFs and high orientation selectivity, while the input layers had greater diversity. Direction-selective cells were among the neurons most selective for orientation and most had small CRFs. A narrow band of direction- and orientation-selective cells with small CRFs was located in the middle of layer 4C, indicating appearance of very selective cells at an early stage of cortical processing. We suggest that these results reflect interactions between excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms specific to each sublamina. Regions with less inhibition have higher spontaneous activity, larger CRFs and broader orientation tuning. Where inhibition is stronger, spontaneous activity almost disappears, CRFs shrink, and orientation selectivity is high.

Pattern motion is present in V1 of awake but not anaesthetized monkeys

We compared responses of neurons, recorded in striate cortex (area V1) of awake, fixating monkeys, to a single drifting grating with those to a 'plaid' pattern comprised of two superimposed drifting gratings separated in orientation by 90 degrees. Five out of 54 (9%) of V1 direction selective neurons responded to the direction of motion of the whole pattern [pattern motion (PM) selectivity]. Tuning curves for plaid stimuli were similar in both optimum direction and width of tuning to those for single gratings. Twenty nine out of 54 (54%) responded simply to the motion of individual orientated gratings within the pattern [component motion (CM) selectivity]. The remaining 37% (20/54) neurons were unclassified. In control experiments, 39 direction selective neurons were recorded in area V1 of anaesthetized monkey and cats. Unlike area V1 in behaving monkeys, none of these neurons exhibited PM selectivity to the drifting plaids. Twenty eight out of 39 (72%) of them responded to the direction of the component gratings and were classified as CM selectivity. Our results indicate that although most V1 neurons are CM selective, as described in anaesthetized animals, a subpopulation is clearly PM selective in behaving monkeys, reflecting integration of locally derived motion signals. Neurons in V1 therefore carry signals that may contribute to pattern motion processing and perception. This perceptual interpretation in V1 might depend much more critically on information integration mechanisms that only function properly in awake, perceiving animals.

Self-organizing neural network model of motion processing in the visual cortex during smooth pursuit

A physiologically based neural network model was constructed to study cortical motion processing during pursuit eye movements. The model consists of three layers of computational units, simulating information processing by direction selective neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1), motion selective neurons in the middle-temporal area, and pursuit selective neurons in the middle-superior-temporal (MST) area. MST units integrate visual and eye-movement related information, and their connections develop during an unsupervised training process. The resulting MST units represent a transition from retinal to real-world reference frame. By analyzing the model connectivity, mechanisms underlying the functions performed by the network are studied.

Corticothalamic interactions in the transfer of visual information

Thalamic function does not stand apart, as a discrete processing step, from the cortical circuitry. The thalamus receives extensive feedback from the cortex and this influences the firing pattern, synchronization and sensory response mode of relay cells. A crucial question concerns the extent to which the feedback simply controls the state and transmission mode of relay cells and the extent to which the feedback participates in the specific processing of sensory information. Using examples from experiments examining the influence of feedback from the visual cortex to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), we argue that thalamic mechanisms are selectively focused by visually driven feedback to optimize the thalamic contribution to segmentation and global integration. This involves effects on both the temporal and spatial parameters characterizing the responses of LGN cells and includes, for example, motion-driven feedback effects from MT (middle temporal visual area) relayed via layer 6 of V1 (primary visual cortex).

Surround suppression in primate V1

We investigated the spatial organization of surround suppression in primate primary visual cortex (V1). We utilized drifting stimuli, configured to extend either from within the classical receptive field (CRF) to surrounding visual space, or from surrounding visual space into the CRF or subdivided to generate direction contrast, to make a detailed examination of the strength, spatial organization, direction dependence, mechanisms, and laminar distribution of surround suppression. Most cells (99/105, 94%) through all cortical layers, exhibited suppression (mean reduction 67%) to uniform stimuli exceeding the CRF, and 43% exhibited a more than 70% reduction. Testing with an annulus revealed two different patterns of surround influence. Some cells (37% of cells), classical surround suppression (CSS) cells exhibited responses to an annulus encroaching on the CRF that were less than the plateau in the spatial summation curve. The majority (63%), center-gated surround suppression (CGSS) cells, showed responses to annuli that equaled or exceeded the plateau in the spatial summation curve. Analysis suggested the CSS mechanism was implemented in all cells while the CGSS mechanism was implemented in varying strength across the sample with the extreme reflected in cells that gave larger responses to annuli than to a center stimulus. Reversing the direction of motion of the portion of the stimulus surrounding the CRF revealed four different patterns of effect: no reduction in the degree of suppression (22% of cells), a reduction in surround suppression (41%), a facilitation of the response above the level to the inner stimulus alone (37%), and a facilitation of the response above that to the inner stimulus alone that also exceeded the values associated with an optimal inner stimulus. The facilitatory effects were only seen for reverse direction interfaces between the central and surrounding stimulus at diameters equal to or more than the CRF size. The zones driving the suppressive influences and the direction contrast facilitation were often spatially heterogeneous and for a number of cells bore strong comparison with the class of behavior reported for surround mechanisms in MT. This suggests a potential role, for example, in extracting information about motion contrast in the representation of the three dimensional structure of moving objects.
