Nanoscale morphological evolution of monocrystalline Pt surfaces during cathodic corrosion

Cathodic corrosion is a relatively unexplored but highly enigmatic electrochemical phenomenon that transforms, roughens, and dissolves metal surfaces under cathodic polarization. We show how cathodic corrosion of a platinum spherical single-crystal electrode in an aqueous alkaline electrolyte leads initially to the formation of etch pits that reflect the local symmetry of the surface and subsequently develop into a growth regime in which self-similar diffusion-limited patterns emerge. These are unique observations that may eventually open the door to controlled surface patterning and nanoparticle preparation.

This paper studies the cathodic corrosion of a spherical single crystal of platinum in an aqueous alkaline electrolyte, to map out the detailed facet dependence of the corrosion structures forming during this still largely unexplored electrochemical phenomenon. We find that anisotropic corrosion of the platinum electrode takes place in different stages. Initially, corrosion etch pits are formed, which reflect the local symmetry of the surface: square pits on (100) facets, triangular pits on (111) facets, and rectangular pits on (110) facets. We hypothesize that these etch pits are formed through a ternary metal hydride corrosion intermediate. In contrast to anodic corrosion, the (111) facet corrodes the fastest, and the (110) facet corrodes the slowest. For cathodic corrosion on the (100) facet and on higher-index surfaces close to the (100) plane, the etch pit destabilizes in a second growth stage, by etching faster in the (111) direction, leading to arms in the etch pit, yielding a concave octagon-shaped pit. In a third growth stage, these arms develop side arms, leading to a structure that strongly resembles a self-similar diffusion-limited growth pattern, with strongly preferred growth directions.

Phospholipid bilayers supported on thiolate-covered nanostructured gold: in situ Raman spectroscopy and electrochemistry of redox species

Thiol-covered nanostructured gold has been tested as a platform for the preparation of high-area phospholipid bilayer systems suitable for optical and electrochemical sensing. In situ and ex situ Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements are made to study methylene blue (MB) and flavin-adenine dinucleotide (FAD) incorporation into dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayers prepared by vesicle fusion on dithiothreitol (DTT)-covered nanostructured gold. Results show that lipophilic positively charged MB molecules are incorporated in the bilayer reaching the DTT-gold interface. On the other hand, the negatively charged FAD molecules are immobilized at the outer part of the phospholipid bilayer and cannot be electrochemically detected. Our results demonstrate that DTT-covered nanostructured gold provides a suitable high-area platform for phospholipid membranes that are able to separate and sense different kinds of molecules and biomolecules.

Restricted surface mobility of thiolate-covered metal surfaces: a simple strategy to produce high-area functionalized surfaces

We have studied the self-assembly of thiol monolayers on high-area nanostructured gold surfaces. These surfaces are highly irregular with a fractal dimension close to 2.5. Auger electron spectroscopy and voltammetric data indicate that thiol self-assembly with a maximum surface coverage approximately 1/3 takes place, the same result as that found for smooth gold surfaces. Therefore, neither curvature effects, which would promote higher coverage, nor excluded volume effects, which would result in lower coverage, are present in these irregular surfaces. The high surface area of the bare electrodes exhibits a rapid surface decay in different liquid media that is hindered by alkanethiolate chemisorption. The presence of thiolate SAMs reduces markedly the mass transport surface diffusion of gold adatoms, hindering surface area decay and freezing the system in a metastable state for days. This effect cannot be explained by considering only hydrocarbon-hydrocarbon chain interactions, because it is also observed for ordered arrays of adsorbed S atoms. Therefore, interactions between ordered chemisorbed species at high coverage seem to be responsible for the observed behavior. The thiol-covered high-area metallic substrates can be used to efficiently anchor a large number of molecules, biomolecules, or nanostructures, improving the performance of SAM-based optical and electrochemical devices.

Exploring Three-Dimensional Nanosystems with Raman Spectroscopy: Methylene Blue Adsorbed on Thiol and Sulfur Monolayers on Gold

Resonant Raman and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopies, complemented with scanning tunnel microscopy and electrochemical techniques, have been used to obtain information about the amount and spatial distribution of methylene blue (MB) molecules immobilized on sulfur and four ultrathin molecular alkanethiolate films self-assembled on Au(111) and rough Au electrodes. The intensity of the Raman signals allow one to estimate the amount of immobilized MB at different organic films, whereas the decrease in the SERS intensity as a function of distance for the rough Au electrodes is used to locate the average position of the MB species with respect to the Au substrate. We found that significant amounts of cationic MB species are able to diffuse into methyl-terminated thiols, but they are stopped at the outer plane of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) by negatively charged carboxylate groups. The relative shift of C-N stretching Raman modes indicates that the binding of MB to S is different from that found for MB on thiols. Most of the molecules immobilized on methyl- and carboxylate-terminated thiols are electrochemically inactive, suggesting that strong coupling between the Au electrode and the MB molecules is needed for charge transfer. Our results are consistent with a small population of electrochemically active MB species very close to the Au surface that reach this position driven by their lipophilic (hydrophobic) character through defects at SAMs.
