Abstract
Nowadays, the tendency in pharmaceutical and food industries is to replace synthetic antioxidants with the natural ones. For this reason, there is a growing interest in analyzing natural, healthy and non-toxic additives as potential antioxidants. Some plants, which contain high levels of phenolic compounds, present an increasing interest for medicine due to their ability to scavenge free radicals, along with other pharmacological activities, such as antibacterial activity, wound healing and anti-inflammatory effect, to mention only a few. The aim of this review is to explore the therapeutic potential of Ocimum basilicum and Trifolium pratense in relation with their phytochemical profile and to highlight the pharmacological activity of aqueous or ethanol extracts. Special attention was devoted to the dermal pathology and wound healing effects, in the context of multiple skin conditions such as acne, eczema boils, psoriasis and rashes. Additionally, both extracts (Trifolium sp. and Ocimum sp.) are characterized by high content of antioxidant compounds, which are responsible for the radiance and resistance of the skin and slowing down of the aging process by maintaining estrogen levels. Moreover, the potential combined effect of the mixed extract is pointed out in terms of future applications for wound healing, based on some preliminary results obtained from a “scratch tests” assay performed with respect to human dermal fibroblasts.

Abstract
Formononetin is a promising bioactive phytoestrogen with evident pharmacological properties. However, the potential hepatoprotective benefit is evidenced limitedly in experiments. This study was designed to investigate the hepatoprotective mechanism and benefit of formononetin against liver injury via network pharmacology combined with biochemical determination. The computational data from network pharmacology identified the crucial genes of formononetin against liver injury, listed as TNF-α, NFκB-p65, TLR3, RELA, TRAF6, IKBKG, IKBKB, TNFRSF1A. And the anti-liver injury of formononetin were mainly involved in suppression of inflammatory pathways, including TNF signaling pathway, NF-κB signaling pathway, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway. In animal investigation, formononetin-dosed mice showed reduced body weight loss and hepatomegaly, meliorated liver function, suppressed hepatotoxicity and inflammatory reaction. Furthermore, the down-regulated expressions of TNF-α, NFκB-p65, TLR3 mRNAs and proteins in the livers of formononetin-dosed mice were detected accordingly. Therefore, we concluded that computational findings based on network pharmacology reveal the pharmacological targets, biological processes, and molecular mechanisms of formononetin against liver injury before some of findings were partially certified in vivo. Overall, formononetin may be a potential active component to prevent or treat liver injury.

Abstract
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is an important cool-season legume plant, which is used as forage. Leaf senescence is a critical developmental process that negatively affects plant quality and yield. The regulatory mechanism of leaf senescence has been studied, and genes involved in leaf senescence have been cloned and characterized in many plants. However, those works mainly focused on model plants. Information about regulatory pathways and the genes involved in leaf senescence in red clover is very sparse. In this study, to better understand leaf senescence in red clover, transcriptome analysis of mature and senescent leaves was investigated using RNA-Seq. A total of about 35,067 genes were identified, and 481 genes were differentially expressed in mature and senescent leaves. Some identified differentially expressed genes showed similar expression patterns as those involved in leaf senescence in other species, such as Arabidopsis, Medicago truncatula and rice. Differentially expressed genes were confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Genes involved in signal transduction, transportation and metabolism of plant hormones, transcription factors and plant senescence were upregulated, while the downregulated genes were primarily involved in nutrient cycling, lipid/carbohydrate metabolism, hormone response and other processes. There were 64 differentially expressed transcription factor genes identified by RNA-Seq, including ERF, WRKY, bHLH, MYB and NAC. A total of 90 genes involved in biosynthesis, metabolism and transduction of plant hormones, including abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, cyokinin, brassinosteroid, salicylic acid and ethylene, were identified. Furthermore, 207 genes with direct roles in leaf senescence were demonstrated, such as senescence-associated genes. These genes were associated with senescence in other plants. Transcriptome analysis of mature and senescent leaves in red clover provides a large number of differentially expressed genes. Further analysis and identification of senescence-associated genes can provide new insight into the regulatory mechanisms of leaf development and senescence in legume plant and red clover.
