High-Spatial-Resolution Benchtop X-ray Fluorescence Imaging through Bragg-Diffraction-Based Focusing with Bent Mosaic Graphite Crystals: A Simulation Study

X-ray fluorescence imaging (XFI) can localize diagnostic or theranostic entities utilizing nanoparticle (NP)-based probes at high resolution in vivo, in vitro, and ex vivo. However, small-animal benchtop XFI systems demonstrating high spatial resolution (variable from sub-millimeter to millimeter range) in vivo are still limited to lighter elements (i.e., atomic number Z≤45). This study investigates the feasibility of focusing hard X-rays from solid-target tubes using ellipsoidal lens systems composed of mosaic graphite crystals with the aim of enabling high-resolution in vivo XFI applications with mid-Z (42≤Z≤64) elements. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to characterize the proposed focusing-optics concept and provide quantitative predictions of the XFI sensitivity, in silico tumor-bearing mice models loaded with palladium (Pd) and barium (Ba) NPs. Based on simulation results, the minimum detectable total mass of PdNPs per scan position is expected to be on the order of a few hundred nanograms under in vivo conform conditions. PdNP masses as low as 150 ng to 50 ng could be detectable with a resolution of 600 μm when imaging abdominal tumor lesions across a range of low-dose (0.8 μGy) to high-dose (8 μGy) exposure scenarios. The proposed focusing-optics concept presents a potential step toward realizing XFI with conventional X-ray tubes for high-resolution applications involving interesting NP formulations.

Reimagining Radiology: A Comprehensive Overview of Reviews at the Intersection of Mobile and Domiciliary Radiology over the Last Five Years

(Background) Domiciliary radiology, which originated in pioneering studies in 1958, has transformed healthcare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, through advancements such as miniaturization and digitization. This evolution, driven by the synergy of advanced technologies and robust data networks, reshapes the intersection of domiciliary radiology and mobile technology in healthcare delivery. (Objective) The objective of this study is to overview the reviews in this field with reference to the last five years to face the state of development and integration of this practice in the health domain. (Methods) A review was conducted on PubMed and Scopus, applying a standard checklist and a qualification process. The outcome detected 21 studies. (Key Content and Findings) The exploration of mobile and domiciliary radiology unveils a compelling and optimistic perspective. Notable strides in this dynamic field include the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), revolutionary applications in telemedicine, and the educational potential of mobile devices. Post-COVID-19, telemedicine advances and the influential role of AI in pediatric radiology signify significant progress. Mobile mammography units emerge as a solution for underserved women, highlighting the crucial importance of early breast cancer detection. The investigation into domiciliary radiology, especially with mobile X-ray equipment, points toward a promising frontier, prompting in-depth research for comprehensive insights into its potential benefits for diverse populations. The study also identifies limitations and suggests future exploration in various domains of mobile and domiciliary radiology. A key recommendation stresses the strategic prioritization of multi-domain technology assessment initiatives, with scientific societies' endorsement, emphasizing regulatory considerations for responsible and ethical technology integration in healthcare practices. The broader landscape of technology assessment should aim to be innovative, ethical, and aligned with societal needs and regulatory standards. (Conclusions) The dynamic state of the field is evident, with active exploration of new frontiers. This overview also provides a roadmap, urging scholars, industry players, and regulators to collectively contribute to the further integration of this technology in the health domain.

Radiology as a Specialty in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis on Medical Students, Radiology Trainees, and Radiologists

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing radiology by automating tasks and assisting in abnormality detection and understanding perceptions of medical students, radiology trainees, and radiologists is vital for preparing them for AI integration in radiology.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following established guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched up to March 5, 2023. Eligible studies reporting outcomes of interest were included, and relevant data were extracted and analyzed using STATA software version 17.0.

RESULTS

A meta-analysis of 21 studies revealed that 22.36% of individuals were less likely to choose radiology as a career due to concerns about advances in AI. Medical students showed higher rates of concern (31.94%) compared to radiology trainees and radiologists (9.16%) (P < .01). Radiology trainees and radiologists also demonstrated higher basic AI knowledge (71.84% vs 35.38%). Medical students had higher rates of belief that AI poses a threat to the radiology job market (42.66% vs 6.25%, P < .02). The pooled rate of respondents who believed that "AI will revolutionize radiology in the future" was 79.48%, with no significant differences based on participants' positions. The pooled rate of responders who believed in the integration of AI in medical curricula was 81.75% among radiology trainees and radiologists and 70.23% among medical students.

CONCLUSION

The study revealed growing concerns regarding the impact of AI in radiology, particularly among medical students, which can be addressed by revamping education, providing direct AI experience, addressing limitations, and emphasizing medico-legal issues to prepare for AI integration in radiology.

Evaluating Hydroxyapatite, Gold Nanoparticles, and Graphene-Copper as Bimodal Agents for X-ray and Computed Tomography

A global need exists for new and more effective contrast agents for computed tomography and traditional X-ray modalities. Among the few options available nowadays, limitations imposed by industrial production, performance, and efficacy restrict the use and reduce the potential of both imaging techniques. The use of nanomaterials as new contrast agents for X-ray and computed tomography is an innovative and viable way to increase the options and enhance performance. In this study, we evaluated eight nanomaterials: hydroxyapatite doped with zinc (Zn-HA 10%); hydroxyapatite doped with strontium (Sr-HA 10%); hydroxyapatite without thermal treatment (HA 282 STT); thermally treated hydroxyapatite (HA 212 500 °C and HA 01.256 CTT 1000 °C); hydroxyapatite microspheres (HA microspheres); gold nanoparticles (AuNP); and graphene oxide doped with copper (Cu-GO). The results showed that for both imaging modalities; HA microspheres were the best option, followed by hydroxyapatite thermally treated at 1000 °C. The nanomaterials with the worst results were hydroxyapatite doped with zinc (Zn-HA 10%), and hydroxyapatite doped with strontium (Sr-HA 10%). Our data demonstrated the potential of using nanomaterials, especially HA microspheres, and hydroxyapatite with thermal treatment (HA 01.256 CTT 1000 °C) as contrast agents for X-ray and computed tomography.

The clinical value of dual-energy CT imaging in preoperative evaluation of pathological types of gastric cancer

BACKGROUND

Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer death. Due to the low rate of early diagnosis, most patients are already in the advanced stage and lose the chance of radical surgery.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the clinical value of computed tomography (CT) dual-energy imaging in preoperative evaluation of pathological types of gastric cancer patients.

METHODS

121 patients with gastric cancer were selected. Dual-energy CT imaging was performed on the patients. The CT values of virtual noncontrast (VNC) images and iodine concentration of the lesion were measured, and the standardized iodine concentration ratio was calculated. The iodine concentration, iodine concentration ratio and CT values of VNC images of different pathological types were analyzed and compared.

RESULTS

The iodine concentration and iodine concentration ratio of gastric mucinous carcinoma patients in venous phase and parenchymal phase were lower than those of gastric non-mucinous carcinoma patients, and the differences were statistically significant (P< 0.05). The iodine concentration and iodine concentration ratio of patients with mucinous adenocarcinoma in venous phase and parenchymal phase were lower than those of patients with choriocarcinoma, and the differences were statistically significant (P< 0.05). The iodine concentration and iodine concentration ratio of middle and high differentiated adenocarcinoma patients in venous phase and parenchymal phase were lower than those of low differentiated adenocarcinoma patients, and the differences were statistically significant (P< 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in CT values of VNC images among venous, arterial, and parenchymal phases in all pathological types of gastric cancer patients (P> 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Dual-energy CT imaging plays an important role in the preoperative evaluation of patients with gastric cancer. The pathological types of gastric cancer are different, and the iodine concentration will change accordingly. Dual-energy CT imaging can effectively evaluate the pathological types of gastric cancer and has high clinical application value.

Utilization of three-layers heterogeneous mammographic phantom through MCNPX code for breast and chest radiation dose levels at different diagnostic X-ray energies: A Monte Carlo simulation study

Introduction

We report the breast and chest radiation dose assessment for mammographic examinations using a three-layer heterogeneous breast phantom through the MCNPX Monte Carlo code.

Methods

A three-layer heterogeneous phantom along with compression plates and X-ray source are modeled. The validation of the simulation code is obtained using the data of AAPM TG-195 report. Deposited energy amount as a function of increasing source energy is calculated over a wide energy range. The behavioral changes in X-ray absorption as well as transmission are examined using the F6 Tally Mesh extension of MCNPX code. Moreover, deposited energy amount is calculated for modeled body phantom in the same energy range.

Results and discussions

The diverse distribution of glands has a significant impact on the quantity of energy received by the various breast layers. In layers with a low glandular ratio, low-energy primary X-ray penetrability is highest. In response to an increase in energy, the absorption in layers with a low glandular ratio decreased. This results in the X-rays releasing their energy in the bottom layers. Additionally, the increase in energy increases the quantity of energy absorbed by the tissues around the breast.

Experimental demonstration of ultrahigh sensitivity Talbot-Lau interferometer for low dose mammography

Objective. Even though the techniques used for breast cancer identification have advanced over the years, current mammography based on x-rays absorption, the 'gold standard' screening test at present, still has some shortcomings as concerns sensitivity and specificity to early-stage cancers, due to poor differentiation between tumor and normal tissues, especially in the case of the dense breasts. We investigate a possible additional technique for breast cancer detection with higher sensitivity and low dose, x-ray phase-contrast or refraction-based imaging with ultrahigh angular sensitivity grating interferometers, having several meters length.Approach.Towards this goal, we built and tested on a mammography phantom, a table-top laboratory setup based on a 5.7 m long Talbot-Lau interferometer with angular sensitivity better than 1μrad. We used a high-power x-ray tungsten anode tube with a 400μm focal spot, operated at 40 kVp and 15 mA with a 2 mm aluminum filter.Main results.The results reported in our paper confirm the ultrahigh sensitivity and dose economy possible with our setup. The visibility of objects simulating cancerous formations is strongly increased in the refraction images over the attenuation ones, even at a low dose of 0.32 mGy. Notably, the smallest fiber of 400μm diameter and calcifications specs of 160μm in diameter are detected, even though the spatial resolution at the object of our magnification M ∼ 2 setup with a 400μm source spot is only ∼250μm.Significance.Our experiments on a mammography phantom illustrate the capabilities of the proposed technique and can open the way toward low-dose interferometric mammography.

Bioimaging: Evolution, Significance, and Deficit

Bioimaging is a digital technology-based medical advancement which is still relatively new. It has to do with real-time visualization of biological processes. This innovative imaging technology combines anatomical structure with functional data such as electric and magnetic fields, motion which is mechanical, and metabolism to provide information on anatomical structure. It's a non-invasive procedure that gives you a bird's-eye view of the human body, with more depth and detail as you go. As a result, bioimaging is a strong tool for seeing the interior functioning of the organism and its disorders. Examples of bioimaging in the medical industry include X-ray and ultrasound pictures, MRI, 3D and 4D body images utilizing Computed Tomography (CT) scans, DEXA scans which is useful for assessing bone density in osteoporosis, and so on. Maximum-resolution, two-positive charge fluorescent excitation microscopy, fluorescence redistribution after photobleaching, and fluorescence resonance energy transfer are some of the recent advancements in biological imaging. It provides us a cellular-level means of obtaining photographs of the entire body, anatomical locations, organs, tissues, and biological indicators. It may be used to aid illness management and therapy, as well as to detect, diagnose, and characterize the problems in clinical settings.

Graphene Quantum Dots as Bimodal Imaging Agent for X-Ray and Computed Tomography

The urgency of new contrast agents, especially for X-Ray and Computed Tomography (CT) is increasing each day. Although both imaging modalities are the most routinely used imaging techniques, the availability of contrast agent is very limited. In this scenario, the use of graphene quantum dots (GQDs), a member of the graphene family, which has several characteristics, including low toxicity, good biocompatibility and physical-chemical properties, may represent an important application of this material. Thus, using X-Ray (conventional) and CT analysis was evaluated the applicability of GQDs as contrast agent for both imaging modalities. The results demonstrated that GQDs are able to attenuate X-Ray forming sharp imaging in both modalities. The data broaden the spectrum of GQDs use.

The Advances and Biomedical Applications of Imageable Nanomaterials

Nanomedicine shows great potential in screening, diagnosing and treating diseases. However, given the limitations of current technology, detection of some smaller lesions and drugs’ dynamic monitoring still need to be improved. With the advancement of nanotechnology, researchers have produced various nanomaterials with imaging capabilities which have shown great potential in biomedical research. Here, we summarized the researches based on the characteristics of imageable nanomaterials, highlighted the advantages and biomedical applications of imageable nanomaterials in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and discussed current challenges and prospects.
