Conceptualization of moral injury: A socio-cognitive perspective

LAY SUMMARY

This article looks at how moral injury (MI) may develop by considering what event features may be especially salient and cause MI and what experiences an individual may have after an event that might lead to the occurrence of a MI. It proposes that the beliefs someone has about themselves, others, and the world can be shaped by experiences in childhood and early life. Once an individual has experienced a potentially morally injurious event (PMIE) — for example, witnessing something that violates deeply held moral or ethical codes but being unable to stop it, doing something that violates these ethical codes, or experiencing a significant betrayal — they may try to make sense of it by changing the way they see the world, themselves, and others. This can lead to problems in the individual’s relationship with themselves and others, leading to feelings of shame and guilt and withdrawal from other people. More important, for an event to be a PMIE, it must significantly challenge strongly held moral beliefs and a sense of right and wrong.

Parental and School Influences on Character Attributes Among Chinese Adolescents

Objectives

While there are many theoretical propositions on parental and school impacts on character formation among adolescents, limited empirical evidence is available. To fill the research gaps, this study examined how parental factors (e.g., behavioral control, support, parent-child relationship, and psychological control) and school factors (teacher-student relationship and student-student relationship) affect adolescents' character attributes in the areas of "treating others well," "self-discipline and law-abidance," and "traditional Chinese virtues," from both child and parent perspectives.

Methods

We used survey data collected from 2,472 Chinese adolescents (Mean age = 14.76 ± 1.82 years; 1,271 girls) and 412 Chinese parents (Mean age = 45.68 ± 6.53 years; 313 mothers) in Hong Kong.

Results

Structural equation modeling revealed significant positive effects of positive parental factors and relational factors in school on children's character attributes. However, psychological control as the indicator of negative parenting did not serve as a negative predictor of adolescents' character attributes.

Conclusion

These findings shed light on the unique contribution of different parental and school factors to character development among Chinese adolescents. The findings also imply the importance of promoting ecological assets in family and school through parent and teacher training in effective character education, which is essential for children and adolescents' healthy development.

Caring for tomorrow's workforce: Moral resilience and healthcare ethics education

BACKGROUND

Preparing tomorrow's healthcare workforce for managing the growing complexity of care places high demands on students, educators, and faculties. In the light of worrying data about study-related stress and burnout, understanding how students manage stressors and develop resilience has been identified as a priority topic of research. In addition to study-related stressors, also moral stressors are known to characterize the students' first clinical experiences.

OBJECTIVES

However, current debates show that it remains unclear how healthcare ethics education should address them. In order to clarify this issue, this study first develops the notion of moral resilience as a response to moral stressors involving both situations of moral complexity and moral wrongness. Second, it explores the potential of healthcare ethics education in fostering moral resilience. For this purpose, it defines moral resilience operationally as a reduction of moral distress in a given axis of time measured by a validated tool.

RESEARCH DESIGN, PARTICIPANTS, AND CONTEXT

The educational transferability was assessed within an explorative, quantitative pre-post interventional study with a purposive sample of 166 nursing students. The educational intervention comprised a lecture introducing the typology of moral stressors. Before and after the lecture, students were presented vignettes depicting morally stressful situations.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

The competent research ethics committee confirmed that no ethical approval was needed. Informed consent was obtained from participants.

FINDINGS

Three of four vignettes showed a modest but statistically significant reduction in measured levels of distress after the lecture (p < 0.05, α = 5%).

DISCUSSION

The study shows the potential of healthcare ethics education in providing students with transformative knowledge that fosters moral resilience.

CONCLUSION

In times of global scarcity of educational resources, healthcare ethics education has an important contribution to offer in the promotion of students' mental and physical health by strengthening the knowledge base of moral resilience. This legitimates its costs for societies, faculties, and professional bodies.

Reframing bioethics education for non-professionals: lessons from cognitive anthropology and education theory

It is increasingly common for universities to provide cross-curricular education in bioethics as part of contemporary attempts to produce 'global citizens.' In this article I examine three perspectives drawn from research into pedagogy that has been conducted from the perspective of cognitive anthropology and consider its relevance to bioethics education. I focus on: two metaphors of learning, participation and acquisition, identified by Sfard; the psychological notion of moral development; and the distinction between socialization and enculturation. Two of these perspectives have been particularly fruitful in understanding the processes of teaching and learning in a variety of domains. The third perspective has been developed in relation to the formal ethical education of medical students. I examine their relevance for 'non-professional' bioethics education suggesting that if we take seriously the idea that it is part of 'educating for citizenship' then the distinction between 'ethics' and 'politics' is blurred as such programmes aim at the development of student's political subjectivity.
