Learning-based algorithms for vessel tracking: A review

Developing efficient vessel-tracking algorithms is crucial for imaging-based diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases. Vessel tracking aims to solve recognition problems such as key (seed) point detection, centerline extraction, and vascular segmentation. Extensive image-processing techniques have been developed to overcome the problems of vessel tracking that are mainly attributed to the complex morphologies of vessels and image characteristics of angiography. This paper presents a literature review on vessel-tracking methods, focusing on machine-learning-based methods. First, the conventional machine-learning-based algorithms are reviewed, and then, a general survey of deep-learning-based frameworks is provided. On the basis of the reviewed methods, the evaluation issues are introduced. The paper is concluded with discussions about the remaining exigencies and future research.

A 3D-1D coupled blood flow and oxygen transport model to generate microvascular networks

In this work, we introduce an algorithmic approach to generate microvascular networks starting from larger vessels that can be reconstructed without noticeable segmentation errors. Contrary to larger vessels, the reconstruction of fine-scale components of microvascular networks shows significant segmentation errors, and an accurate mapping is time and cost intense. Thus there is a need for fast and reliable reconstruction algorithms yielding surrogate networks having similar stochastic properties as the original ones. The microvascular networks are constructed in a marching way by adding vessels to the outlets of the vascular tree from the previous step. To optimise the structure of the vascular trees, we use Murray's law to determine the radii of the vessels and bifurcation angles. In each step, we compute the local gradient of the partial pressure of oxygen and adapt the orientation of the new vessels to this gradient. At the same time, we use the partial pressure of oxygen to check whether the considered tissue block is supplied sufficiently with oxygen. Computing the partial pressure of oxygen, we use a 3D-1D coupled model for blood flow and oxygen transport. To decrease the complexity of a fully coupled 3D model, we reduce the blood vessel network to a 1D graph structure and use a bi-directional coupling with the tissue which is described by a 3D homogeneous porous medium. The resulting surrogate networks are analysed with respect to morphological and physiological aspects.

Progressive Minimal Path Method for Segmentation of 2D and 3D Line Structures

We propose a novel minimal path method for the segmentation of 2D and 3D line structures. Minimal path methods perform propagation of a wavefront emanating from a start point at a speed derived from image features, followed by path extraction using backtracing. Usually, the computation of the speed and the propagation of the wave are two separate steps, and point features are used to compute a static speed. We introduce a new continuous minimal path method which steers the wave propagation progressively using dynamic speed based on path features. We present three instances of our method, using an appearance feature of the path, a geometric feature based on the curvature of the path, and a joint appearance and geometric feature based on the tangent of the wavefront. These features have not been used in previous continuous minimal path methods. We compute the features dynamically during the wave propagation, and also efficiently using a fast numerical scheme and a low-dimensional parameter space. Our method does not suffer from discretization or metrication errors. We performed qualitative and quantitative evaluations using 2D and 3D images from different application areas.
