Design and analysis of quantum powered support vector machines for malignant breast cancer diagnosis

The rapid pace of development over the last few decades in the domain of machine learning mirrors the advances made in the field of quantum computing. It is natural to ask whether the conventional machine learning algorithms could be optimized using the present-day noisy intermediate-scale quantum technology. There are certain computational limitations while training a machine learning model on a classical computer. Using quantum computation, it is possible to surpass these limitations and carry out such calculations in an optimized manner. This study illustrates the working of the quantum support vector machine classification model which guarantees an exponential speed-up over its typical alternatives. This research uses the quantum SVM model to solve the classification task of a malignant breast cancer diagnosis. This study also demonstrates a comparative analysis of distinct forms of SVM algorithms concerning their time complexity and performances on standard evaluation metrics, namely accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, to exemplify the supremacy of quantum SVM over its conventional variants.

EARN: an ensemble machine learning algorithm to predict driver genes in metastatic breast cancer

BACKGROUND

Today, there are a lot of markers on the prognosis and diagnosis of complex diseases such as primary breast cancer. However, our understanding of the drivers that influence cancer aggression is limited.

METHODS

In this work, we study somatic mutation data consists of 450 metastatic breast tumor samples from cBio Cancer Genomics Portal. We use four software tools to extract features from this data. Then, an ensemble classifier (EC) learning algorithm called EARN (Ensemble of Artificial Neural Network, Random Forest, and non-linear Support Vector Machine) is proposed to evaluate plausible driver genes for metastatic breast cancer (MBCA). The decision-making strategy for the proposed ensemble machine is based on the aggregation of the predicted scores obtained from individual learning classifiers to be prioritized homo sapiens genes annotated as protein-coding from NCBI.

RESULTS

This study is an attempt to focus on the findings in several aspects of MBCA prognosis and diagnosis. First, drivers and passengers predicted by SVM, ANN, RF, and EARN are introduced. Second, biological inferences of predictions are discussed based on gene set enrichment analysis. Third, statistical validation and comparison of all learning methods are performed by some evaluation metrics. Finally, the pathway enrichment analysis (PEA) using ReactomeFIVIz tool (FDR < 0.03) for the top 100 genes predicted by EARN leads us to propose a new gene set panel for MBCA. It includes HDAC3, ABAT, GRIN1, PLCB1, and KPNA2 as well as NCOR1, TBL1XR1, SIRT4, KRAS, CACNA1E, PRKCG, GPS2, SIN3A, ACTB, KDM6B, and PRMT1. Furthermore, we compare results for MBCA to other outputs regarding 983 primary tumor samples of breast invasive carcinoma (BRCA) obtained from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The comparison between outputs shows that ROC-AUC reaches 99.24% using EARN for MBCA and 99.79% for BRCA. This statistical result is better than three individual classifiers in each case.

CONCLUSIONS

This research using an integrative approach assists precision oncologists to design compact targeted panels that eliminate the need for whole-genome/exome sequencing. The schematic representation of the proposed model is presented as the Graphic abstract.

Data Tagging in Medical Images: A Survey of the State-of-Art

A huge amount of medical data is generated every second, and a significant percentage of the data are images that need to be analyzed and processed. One of the key challenges in this regard is the recovery of the data of medical images. The medical image recovery procedure should be done automatically by the computers that are the method of identifying object concepts and assigning homologous tags to them. To discover the hidden concepts in the medical images, the lowlevel characteristics should be used to achieve high-level concepts and that is a challenging task. In any specific case, it requires human involvement to determine the significance of the image. To allow machine-based reasoning on the medical evidence collected, the data must be accompanied by additional interpretive semantics; a change from a pure data-intensive methodology to a model of evidence rich in semantics. In this state-of-art, data tagging methods related to medical images are surveyed which is an important aspect for the recognition of a huge number of medical images. Different types of tags related to the medical image, prerequisites of medical data tagging, different techniques to develop medical image tags, different medical image tagging algorithms and different tools that are used to create the tags are discussed in this paper. The aim of this state-of-art paper is to produce a summary and a set of guidelines for using the tags for the identification of medical images and to identify the challenges and future research directions of tagging medical images.

Thermal Imaging in Medical Science

Thermal imaging is a non-destructive, non-contact and rapid system. It reports temperature through measuring infrared radiation emanated by an object/ material surface. Automated thermal imaging system involves thermal camera equipped with infrared detectors, signal processing unit and image acquisition system supported by computer. It is elaborated in wide domains applications. Extensive focus is directed to the thermal imaging in the medical domain especially breast cancer detection. This chapter provided the main concept and the different applications of thermal imaging. It explores and analyses several works in the light of studding the thermograph. It is an effective screening tool for breast cancer prediction. Studies justify that thermography can be considered a complementary tool to detect breast diseases. The current chapter reviews many usages and limitations of thermography in biomedical field. Extensive recommendations for future directions are summarized to provide a structured vision of breast thermography.
