Abstract
Heterobimetallic complexes are studied for their ability to mimic biological systems as well as active sites in heterogeneous catalysts. While specific interest in early/late heterobimetallic systems has fluctuated, they serve as important models to fundamentally understand metal-metal bonding. Specifically, the polarized metal-metal multiple bonds formed in highly reduced early/late heterobimetallic complexes exemplify how each metal modulates the electronic environment and reactivity of the complex as a whole. In this Perspective, we chronicle the development of phosphinoamide-supported group IV/cobalt heterobimetallic complexes. This combination of metals allows access to a low valent Co-I center, which performs a rich variety of bond activation reactions when coupled with the pendent Lewis acidic metal center. Conversely, the low valent late transition metal is also observed to act as an electron reservoir, allowing for redox processes to occur at the d0 group IV metal site. Most of the bond activation reactions carried out by phosphinoamide-bridged M/Co-I (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) complexes are facilitated by cleavage of metal-metal multiple bonds, which serve as readily accessible electron reservoirs. Comparative studies in which both the number of buttressing ligands as well as the identity of the early metal were varied to give a library of heterobimetallic complexes are summarized, providing a thorough understanding of the reactivity of M/Co-I heterobimetallic systems.

Abstract
Magnetic effects of lanthanide bonding Lanthanide coordination compounds have attracted attention for their persistent magnetic properties near liquid nitrogen temperature, well above alternative molecular magnets. Gould et al. report that introducing metal-metal bonding can enhance coercivity. Reduction of iodide-bridged terbium or dysprosium dimers resulted in a single electron bond between the metals, which enforced alignment of the other valence electrons. The resultant coercive fields exceeded 14 tesla below 50 and 60 kelvin for the terbium and dysprosium compounds, respectively. —JSY

Abstract
Metal string complexes, linearly aligned transition metal arrays coordinated with the multidentate organic ligands, have gained much attention both in unique electronic/structural properties and in potential applications as conductive molecular nanowires. Here we report on a dimerized NiII trinuclear complex, [Ni6Cl2(dpa)8](I5)2·0.25I2 (dpa- = 2,2'-dipyridylamide anion). X-ray structural analysis revealed that two trinuclear moieties are bridged by a Cl anion to form a dimerized string structure. This is the first example of two Ni string complexes that are connected. In the electronic absorption and Raman spectra, characteristic absorption bands and a vibration mode based on the dimer string structure were observed. In the solid state, dimer complexes align in one dimension in an MMMXMMMX (M = metal, X = halogen) manner, leading to the intra- and interdimer antiferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract
Iron-based extended metal atom chains (EMACs) are potentially high-spin molecules with axial magnetic anisotropy and thus candidate single-molecule magnets (SMMs). We herein compare the tetrairon(ii), halide-capped complexes [Fe4(tpda)3Cl2] (1Cl) and [Fe4(tpda)3Br2] (1Br), obtained by reacting iron(ii) dihalides with [Fe2(Mes)4] and N2,N6-di(pyridin-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-diamine (H2tpda) in toluene, under strictly anhydrous and anaerobic conditions (HMes = mesitylene). Detailed structural, electrochemical and Mössbauer data are presented along with direct-current (DC) and alternating-current (AC) magnetic characterizations. DC measurements revealed similar static magnetic properties for the two derivatives, with χMT at room temperature above that for independent spin carriers, but much lower at low temperature. The electronic structure of the iron(ii) ions in each derivative was explored by ab initio (CASSCF-NEVPT2-SO) calculations, which showed that the main magnetic axis of all metals is directed close to the axis of the chain. The outer metals, Fe1 and Fe4, have an easy-axis magnetic anisotropy (D = -11 to -19 cm-1, |E/D| = 0.05-0.18), while the internal metals, Fe2 and Fe3, possess weaker hard-axis anisotropy (D = 8-10 cm-1, |E/D| = 0.06-0.21). These single-ion parameters were held constant in the fitting of DC magnetic data, which revealed ferromagnetic Fe1-Fe2 and Fe3-Fe4 interactions and antiferromagnetic Fe2-Fe3 coupling. The competition between super-exchange interactions and the large, noncollinear anisotropies at metal sites results in a weakly magnetic non-Kramers doublet ground state. This explains the SMM behavior displayed by both derivatives in the AC susceptibility data, with slow magnetic relaxation in 1Br being observable even in zero static field.

Abstract
Controlling the flow of electrical current at the nanoscale typically requires complex top-down approaches. Here, a bottom-up approach is employed to demonstrate resistive switching within molecular wires that consist of double-helical metallopolymers and are constructed by self-assembly. When the material is exposed to an electric field, it is determined that ≈25% of the copper atoms oxidize from CuI to CuII , without rupture of the polymer chain. The ability to sustain such a high level of oxidation is unprecedented in a copper-based molecule: it is made possible here by the double helix compressing in order to satisfy the new coordination geometry required by CuII . This mixed-valence structure exhibits a 104 -fold increase in conductivity, which is projected to last on the order of years. The increase in conductivity is explained as being promoted by the creation, upon oxidation, of partly filledd z 2 orbitals aligned along the mixed-valence copper array; the long-lasting nature of the change in conductivity is due to the structural rearrangement of the double-helix, which poses an energetic barrier to re-reduction. This work establishes helical metallopolymers as a new platform for controlling currents at the nanoscale.

When Molecular Magnetism Meets Supramolecular Chemistry: Multifunctional and Multiresponsive Dicopper(II) Metallacyclophanes as Proof-of-Concept for Single-Molecule Spintronics and Quantum Computing Technologies? Abstract
Molecular magnetism has made a long journey, from the fundamental studies on through-ligand electron exchange magnetic interactions in dinuclear metal complexes with extended organic bridges to the more recent exploration of their electron spin transport and quantum coherence properties. Such a field has witnessed a renaissance of dinuclear metallacyclic systems as new experimental and theoretical models for single-molecule spintronics and quantum computing, due to the intercrossing between molecular magnetism and metallosupramolecular chemistry. The present review reports a state-of-the-art overview as well as future perspectives on the use of oxamato-based dicopper(II) metallacyclophanes as promising candidates to make multifunctional and multiresponsive, single-molecule magnetic (nano)devices for the physical implementation of quantum information processing (QIP). They incorporate molecular magnetic couplers, transformers, and wires, controlling and facilitating the spin communication, as well as molecular magnetic rectifiers, transistors, and switches, exhibiting a bistable (ON/OFF) spin behavior under external stimuli (chemical, electronic, or photonic). Special focus is placed on the extensive research work done by Professor Francesc Lloret, an outstanding chemist, excellent teacher, best friend, and colleague, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to molecular magnetism on the occasion of his 65th birthday.

Abstract
Chromium(II)-based extended metal atom chains have been the focus of considerable discussion regarding their symmetric versus unsymmetric structure and magnetism. We have now investigated four complexes of this class, namely, [Cr3(dpa)4X2] and [Cr5(tpda)4X2] with X = Cl- and SCN- [Hdpa = dipyridin-2-yl-amine; H2tpda = N2,N6-di(pyridin-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-diamine]. By dc/ac magnetic techniques and EPR spectroscopy, we found that all these complexes have easy-axis anisotropies of comparable magnitude in their S = 2 ground state (|D| = 1.5-1.8 cm-1) and behave as single-molecule magnets at low T. Ligand-field and DFT/CASSCF calculations were used to explain the similar magnetic properties of tri- versus pentachromium(II) strings, in spite of their different geometrical preferences and electronic structure. For both X ligands, the ground structure is unsymmetric in the pentachromium(II) species (i.e., with an alternation of long and short Cr-Cr distances) but is symmetric in their shorter congeners. Analysis of the electronic structure using quasi-restricted molecular orbitals (QROs) showed that the four unpaired electrons in Cr5 species are largely localized in four 3d-like QROs centered on the terminal, "isolated" Cr2+ ion. In Cr3 complexes, they occupy four nonbonding combinations of 3d-like orbitals centered only on the two terminal metals. In both cases, then, QRO eigenvalues closely mirror the 3d-level pattern of the terminal ions, whose coordination environment remains quite similar irrespective of chain length. We conclude that the extent of unpaired-electron delocalization has little impact on the magnetic anisotropy of these wire-like molecular species.

Abstract
Five heterometallic pentanuclear metal strings were prepared by stepwise synthesis from two to three and four kinds of metals aligned in one chain. In particular, NiPtCo2Pd(tpda)4Cl2 (5) possesses four different metals, and the SQUID measurement shows that Ni2+ is the only magnetically active center. Besides, the shortest Co(ii)-Co(ii) single bond (2.105(9) Å), so far, is reported.

Abstract
Extended metal atom chains (EMACs) are promising candidates for molecular wires but their band structures remain to be explored. As a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) system, the incommensurate helical nature of EMACs hinders such calculations. In this work, we resolved this issue via explicit implementation of helical symmetry. Moreover, the pattern of metal d bands was rationalized by a systematic investigation on a series of related Q1D helical systems. Two critical factors, helical ligand field and chemically asymmetric ligand field, are proposed and identified. We found that the symmetry and ligand fields of the system dominate the pattern of the metal d bands, instead of specific chemical composition of ligands. The presented method and rationale are applicable to not only EMACs but also related Q1D helical systems.

Abstract
The stringlike complex [Fe4(tpda)3Cl2] (2; H2tpda = N2, N6-bis(pyridin-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-diamine) was obtained as the first homometallic extended metal atom chain based on iron(II) and oligo-α-pyridylamido ligands. The synthesis was performed under strictly anaerobic and anhydrous conditions using dimesityliron, [Fe2(Mes)4] (1; HMes = mesitylene), as both an iron source and a deprotonating agent for H2tpda. The four lined-up iron(II) ions in the structure of 2 (Fe···Fe = 2.94-2.99 Å, Fe···Fe···Fe = 171.7-168.8°) are wrapped by three doubly deprotonated twisted ligands, and the chain is capped at its termini by two chloride ions. The spectroscopic and electronic properties of 2 were investigated in dichloromethane by UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical measurements showed four fully resolved, quasi-reversible one-electron-redox processes, implying that 2 can adopt five oxidation states in a potential window of only 0.8 V. Direct current (dc) magnetic measurements indicate dominant ferromagnetic coupling at room temperature, although the ground state is only weakly magnetic. On the basis of density functional theory and angular overlap model calculations, this magnetic behavior was explained as being due to two pairs of ferromagnetically coupled iron(II) ions ( J = -21 cm-1 using JŜ i·Ŝ j convention) weakly antiferromagnetically coupled with each other. Alternating-current susceptibility data in the presence of a 2 kOe dc field and at frequencies up to 1.5 kHz revealed the onset of slow magnetic relaxation below 2.8 K, with the estimated energy barrier Ueff/ kB = 10.1(1.3) K.

Abstract
The CoRu2(dpa)4Cl2 (1) (dpa: 2,2'-dipyridylamide) is synthesized by the reaction of Ru2(OAc)4Cl and Co3(dpa)4Cl2. By mixing 1 with NH3, Co2+ can be removed and result in the formation of unique binuclear complex 4,0-Ru2(dpa)4Cl (2) featuring one coordination pocket supported by free pyridine groups. Hence, this complex can act as an outstanding precursor for the formation of heterotrimetallic chains with MRu2 cores. A series of M-Ru25+ complexes (M = Co2+ (3), Ag+ (4), Mn2+ (5), Fe2+ (6), Zn2+ (7), Cd2+ (8), Pd2+ (9), Rh2+ (10), and Ir2+ (11)) were prepared and isolated, representing the most complete series of heterotrimetallic chains to date. All these metal string complexes are in a linear trimetallic framework helically wrapped by four dpa- ligands, characterized by X-ray diffraction measurements. The bending of the trinuclear metal cores in RhRu2 (10) and IrRu2 (11) (∠Ru-Ru-Rh: 167.58° and ∠Ru-Ru-Ir: 167.61°) indicates that a heterometallic metal-metal bonds (Ru-Rh; Ru-Ir) are generated. The studies from DFT calculation of 10 and 11 coincide with the experimental results. Furthermore, the MRu25+ distances are regulated by the factors including the bonding force of M-pyridyl and the static repulsion between M and Ru25+ unit. Interestingly, the trend for these distances is in line with that observed in trans-M(py)4Cl2 complexes.

Abstract
The preparation of an unprecedented GeI -GeI bonded digermylene [K2 {Ge2 (μ-κ2 :η2 :η4 -2,6-(2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 -N)2 -4-CH3 C5 H2 N)2 }] in an eclipsed conformation stabilized by two bridging diamidopyridyl ligands is presented. Although it exhibits an eclipsed conformation, the Ge-Ge bond length is 2.5168(6) Å, which is shorter than those in the trans-bent and gauche digermylenes. In combination with two pendant amido groups, the GeI2 motif is employed as a building block to assemble the first example of octagermylene [Ge4 (μ-κ2 :κ1 -2,6-(2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 -N)2 -4-CH3 C5 H2 N)2 ]2 showing a cyclic configuration and containing three distinct types of GeI -GeI bonds.

Abstract
The solvothermal reactions of 2,3,5-trichlorobenzoic acid (HL) 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy), CoCl2·6H2O, and Ln2O3 afforded three novel 3d–4f tetranuclear complexes Co2Ln2(L)10(bipy)2 (Ln = Dy 1, Ho 2, and Er 3), which have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and element analyses. Complexes 1–3 crystallize in the triclinic space group P1, and the completely deprotonated L ligands possess μ2 : η2, η1 and μ2 : η1, η1 coordination modes to bridge adjacent metal ions, which further connect into 2D layers by hydrogen bonds. Magnetic studies indicate ferromagnetic interactions between adjacent metal ions in complexes 1 and 3.

Abstract
The relationship between equatorial ligands structures and magnetic response of [Ni3]6+ extended metal atom chain core has been investigated. The distances between metal ions in Ni metal strings are largely predefined by framework provided through equatorial ligands. The equatorial ligands thus have primary influence on the magnitude of magnetic coupling between terminal high spin centers. Since the σ channel has greatest contribution to J, the variations in Ni–Ni bond lengths have immediate and strong effect on magnetic properties. The secondary, yet important role is played by ligand field strength and nucleophilicity. It has been shown that energy difference between singly occupied σ-type MOs composed of d(z2) of terminal ions and doubly occupied σ-type MO evolved from d(z2) of the central ion in antiferromagnetic state solution is inversely proportional to magnitude of J. Hence, the alignment between energies of d(z2) orbitals on HS and LS centers directly affected by ligand field strength governs the magnetic response. Moreover, the greater basicity of lone pairs coordinating terminal metal atoms correlates with the larger absolute value of magnetic coupling constant.

Abstract
Reaction of Mo2(dpa)4 (dpa = 2,2'-dipyridylamido) with (1)/2 equiv of [Ru(CO)3Cl2]2 in molten naphthalene at 250 °C provides facile access to the first all-second-row transition metal heterometallic chain compound, MoMoRu(dpa)4Cl2 (1). The one-electron oxidized compound [MoMoRu(dpa)4Cl2](OTf) (2) is synthesized by reaction of 1 with FeCp2(OTf). X-ray crystallography reveals a contraction of the Mo-Ru bond distance from 2.38 Å in 1 to 2.30 Å in 2, and an elongation of the Mo-Mo bond distance from 2.12 Å in 1 to 2.21 Å in 2. The short Mo-Ru bond distances indicate significant electron delocalization along the Mo-Mo-Ru chain, which is quantified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Molecular orbital analyses of both compounds based on DFT results reveal full delocalization of the orbitals of σ and π symmetry for both compounds. Additionally, δ orbital delocalization is observed in 2.

Abstract
Carotenes are naturally abundant unsaturated hydrocarbon pigments, and their fascinating physical and chemical properties have been studied intensively not only for better understanding of the roles in biological processes but also for the use in artificial chemical systems. However, their metal-binding ability has been virtually unexplored. Here we report that β-carotene has the ability to assemble and align ten metal atoms to afford decanuclear homo- and heterometal chain complexes. The metallo–carotenoid framework shows reversible metalation–demetalation reactivity with multiple metals, which allows us to control the size of metal chains as well as the heterobimetallic composition and arrangement of the carotene-supported metal chains. Carotenes are naturally abundant, widely studied unsaturated hydrocarbon pigments but their metal-binding ability has been virtually unexplored. Here, the authors demonstrate that they can be used to reversibly assemble and align homo- and hetero-metallic decanuclear chain complexes.

Abstract
This communication provides a practical strategy for the synthesis of heterotrimetallic extended metal atom chains with supported dpa(-) ligands. The transformation of the CoCoRh to a NiCoRh trinuclear complex can be achieved by direct metallic replacement. Furthermore, the first (CoRh)(4+) metal-metal bond is described here.

Abstract
In the presence of Na(+) ions, the reaction of the ligand 2-hydroxy-1,3-bis-(3-oxo-3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-propionyl)-benzene, H5L4, with M(AcO)2 salts (M = Mn, Co) gathers the conditions for the assembly of coordination complexes (NBu4)3[M2Na2(H2L4)3] (M = Mn(II) 1 and Co(II) 2), which exhibit a new paddle-wheel structure. The features of this new category of compounds are discussed as well as their magnetic properties and solution behaviour.

Abstract
We report here the syntheses, X-ray crystal structures, electrochemistry, and density functional theory (DFT) single-point calculations of three new complexes: tetrakis(monothiosuccinimidato)dimolybdenum(II) [Mo2(SNO5)4, 1a], tetrakis(6-thioxo-2-piperidinonato)dimolybdenum(II) [Mo2(SNO6)4, 1b], and chlorotetrakis(monothiosuccinimidato)pyridinelithiumdimolybdenum(II) [pyLiMo2(SNO5)4Cl, 2-py]. X-ray crystallography shows unusually short axial Mo2-Cl bond lengths in 2-py, 2.6533(6) Å, and dimeric 2-dim, 2.644(1) Å, which we propose result from an increased Lewis acidity of the Mo2 unit in the presence of the proximal Li(+) ion. When 2-py is dissolved in MeCN, the lithium reversibly dissociates, forming an equilibrium mixture of (MeCNLiMo2(SNO5)4Cl) (2-MeCN) and [Li(MeCN)4](+)[Mo2(SNO5)4Cl](-) (3). Cyclic voltammetry was used to determine the equilibrium lithium binding constant (room temperature, K(eq) = 95 ± 1). From analysis of the temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant, thermodynamic parameters for the formation of 2-MeCN from 3 (ΔH° = -6.96 ± 0.93 kJ mol(-1) and ΔS° = 13.9 ± 3.5 J mol(-1) K(-1)) were extracted. DFT calculations indicate that Li(+) affects the Mo-Cl bond length through polarization of metal-metal bonding/antibonding molecular orbitals when lithium and chloride are added to the dimolybdenum core.
