Abstract
Easily accessible via a simple esterification of alcohols with formic acid, alkyl formates are used as a novel class of transfer hydroalkylation reagents, CO2 acting as a traceless linker. As a proof-of-concept, their reactivity in the transfer hydroalkylation of imines is investigated, using a ruthenium-based catalyst and LiI as promoter to cleave the C-O σ-bond of the formate scaffold. Providing tertiary amines, the reaction displays a divergent regioselectivity compared to previously reported transfer hydroalkylation strategies.

Abstract
Sulfonamide moieties widely exist in natural products, biologically active substance, and pharmaceuticals. Here, an efficient water-soluble amide iridium complexes-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation reduction of N-sulfonylimine is developed, which can be carried out under environmentally friendly conditions, affording a series of sulfonamide compounds in excellent yields (96-98%). In comparison with organic solvents, water is shown to be critical for a high catalytic transfer hydrogenation reduction in which the catalyst loading can be as low as 0.001 mol %. These amide iridium complexes are easy to synthesize, one structure of which was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This protocol gives an operationally simple, practical, and environmentally friendly strategy for synthesis of sulfonamide compounds.

Abstract
Chiral phosphoric-acid-catalyzed asymmetric reductions of trans-chalcones have been investigated in this work. A BINOL-derived boro-phosphate-catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of the carbon-carbon double bond of trans-chalcone derivatives employing borane as a hydride source was realized. This methodology provides a convenient procedure to access chiral dihydrochalone derivatives in high yields and with high enantioselectivities under mild conditions.

Abstract
Multilayer graphene (MLG), obtained by mild sonication of graphite in NMP or pyridine, was fully characterized via atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). Then, it was functionalized via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with azomethine ylides generated by thermal 1,2-prototropy of various imino esters. The resulting MLG, containing substituted proline-based amine functions, was characterized by XPS and it showed high nitrogen loading, ranging from 0.6 to 4.2 at% depending on the imino ester used. Among these functionalized MLGs a probe sample was subjected to ester hydrolysis and used as a heterogeneous N,O-chelating ligand to coordinate iridium atomic centers. This supported complex was also characterized by XPS and its catalytic activity was tested in the hydrogen transfer reduction of acetophenone, obtaining up to 85% yield. Furthermore, this catalyst could be recycled up to four times.

Abstract
The condensation of anthracene-9-carbaldehyde with 2-(phenylthio/seleno)ethylamine results in Schiff bases [PhS(CH2)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]N-9-C14H9](L1) and [PhSe(CH2)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]N-9-C14H9] (L2). On their reaction with [(η5-Cp*)IrCl(μ-Cl)]2 and CH3COONa at 50 °C followed by treatment with NH4PF6, iridacycles, [(η5-Cp*)Ir(L-H)][PF6] (1: L = L1; 2: L = L2), result. The same reaction in the absence of CH3COONa gives complexes [(η5-Cp*)Ir(L)Cl][PF6] (3-4) in which L = L1(3)/L2(4) ligates in a bidentate mode. The ligands and complexes were authenticated with HR-MS and NMR spectra [1H, 13C{1H} and 77Se{1H} (in the case of L2 and its complexes only)]. Single crystal structures of L2 and half sandwich complexes 1-4 were established with X-ray crystallography. Three coordination sites of Ir in each complex are covered with η5-Cp* and on the remaining three, donor atoms present are: N, S/Se and C-/Cl-, resulting in a piano-stool structure. The moisture and air insensitive 1-4 act as efficient catalysts under mild conditions for base free N-alkylation of amines with benzyl alcohols and transfer hydrogenation (TH) of aldehydes/ketones. The optimum loading of 1-4 as a catalyst is 0.1-0.5 mol% for both the activations. The best reaction temperature is 80 °C for transfer hydrogenation and 100 °C for N-alkylation. The mercury poisoning test supports a homogeneous pathway for both the reactions catalyzed by 1-4. The two catalytic processes are most efficient with 3 followed by 4 > 1 > 2. The mechanism proposed on the basis of HR-MS of the reaction mixtures of the two catalytic processes taken after 1-2 h involves the formation of an alkoxy and hydrido species. The real catalytic species proposed in the case of iridacycles results due to the loss of the Cp* ring.

Abstract
Enantioselective synthesis of α-aryl and α-heteroaryl piperidines is reported. The key step is an iridium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of substituted N-benzylpyridinium salts. High levels of enantioselectivity up to 99.3:0.7 er were obtained for a range of α-heteroaryl piperidines. DFT calculations support an outersphere dissociative mechanism for the pyridinium reduction. Notably, initial protonation of the final enamine intermediate determines the stereochemical outcome of the transformation rather than hydride reduction of the resultant iminium intermediate.

Abstract
The enantiomeric excess (ee) for the organo-iridium catalysed reduction of imines decreases during the reaction because the rate of formation of the (R)-product amine follows first-order kinetics whereas that for the (S)-enantiomer is zero-order.

Abstract
Generally, transition metal catalysts are essential for the reductive hydrogen atom transfer reaction, which is also known as the transfer hydrogenation reaction or the borrowing-hydrogen reaction. It has been reported that graphene can be an active catalyst in ethylene and nitrobenzene reductions, but no report has described carbon-based materials as catalysts for alcohol amination via the borrowing-hydrogen reaction mechanism. Here we show the results from the preparation, characterization and catalytic performance investigation of carbon catalysts in transition metal-free borrowing-hydrogen reactions using alcohol amination and nitro compound/ketone reduction as model reactions. XPS, XRD, SEM, FT-IR and N2 adsorption-desorption studies revealed that C=O group in the carbon catalysts may be a possible catalytically active site, and high surface area is important for gaining high activity. The activity of the carbon catalyst remained unchanged after reuse. This study provides an attractive and useful methodology for a wider range of applications.

Abstract
Catalytic α-alkylation of esters with primary alcohols is a desirable process because it uses low-toxicity agents and generates water as the by-product. Reported herein is a NCP pincer/Ir catalyst which is highly efficient for α-alkylation of a broad scope of unactivated esters under mild reaction conditions. For the first time, alcohols alkylate unactivated α-substituted acyclic esters, lactones, and even methyl and ethyl acetates. This method can be applied to the synthesis of carboxylic acid derivatives with diverse structures and functional groups, some of which would be impossible to access by conventional enolate alkylations with alkyl halides.

Abstract
Metal-ligand cooperation (MLC) plays an important role in catalysis. Systems reported so far are generally based on a single mode of MLC. We report here a system with potential for MLC by both amine-amide and aromatization-dearomatization ligand transformations, based on a new class of phosphino-pyridyl ruthenium pincer complexes, bearing sec-amine coordination. These pincer complexes are effective catalysts under unprecedented mild conditions for acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols to esters at 35 °C and hydrogenation of esters at room temperature and 5 atm H2. The likely actual catalyst, a novel, crystallographically characterized monoanionic de-aromatized enamido-Ru(II) complex, was obtained by deprotonation of both the N-H and the methylene proton of the N-arm of the pincer ligand.

Abstract
An efficient one-pot ruthenium-catalyzed hydrogen-transfer strategy for a direct access to α,β-unsaturated aldehydes has been developed. The employment of enolates prepared in situ from alcohols avoided handling unstable aldehydes and provided a very appealing route to different cinnamaldehydes substituted in position 2. A silica-grafted amine was used as phase-switch tag leading to a selective one-pot process in favor of cross-dehydrogenative coupling products.

Abstract
The organometallic approach is one of the most active topics in catalysis. The application of NH functionality in organometallic catalysis has become an important and attractive concept in catalyst design. NH moieties in the modifiers of organometallic catalysts have been shown to have various beneficial functions in catalysis by molecular recognition through hydrogen bonding to give catalyst-substrate, ligand-ligand, ligand-catalyst, and catalyst-catalyst interactions. This Review summarizes recent progress in the development of the organometallic catalysts based on the concept of cooperative catalysis by focusing on the NH moiety.

Abstract
The first α-alkylation of unactivated amides with primary alcohols is described. An effective and robust iridium pincer complex has been developed for selective α-alkylation of tertiary and secondary acetamides involving a "borrowing hydrogen" methodology. The method is compatible with alcohols bearing various functional groups. This presents a convenient and environmentally benign protocol for α-alkylation of amides.
