Abstract
We present a previously unknown series of cyclometalated platinum(IV) NHC complexes, obtained by oxidative addition of iodine, iodomethane, and different benzyl bromides to platinum(II) complexes with cyclometalated C^C* dibenzofuran, dibenzothiophene, and phenylimidazole ligands together with an acetylacetonate ligand. All compounds were characterized by standard techniques (1H, 13C, and 195Pt NMR and elemental analysis), and for three complexes, solid-state structures could be obtained. DFT calculations (B3LYP(d3)/def2-TZVPP including dispersion interactions in dichloromethane and acetone) were performed to investigate the mechanism of the oxidation and explain the exclusive formation of the observed trans products.

Abstract
The mechanisms of formation, decomposition, and isomerisation of platinacyclobutane complexes [PtCl2(C3H6)L2] (L is typically pyridine) are discussed on the basis of density functional theory (DFT). The isomerisation and decomposition reactions occur through 5-coordinate intermediates [PtCl2(C3H6)L] that cannot be directly detected. These 5-coordinate complexes are predicted to have distorted square pyramidal structures, but a pinched trigonal bipyramidal (PTBP) stereochemistry is easily accessible. Both α- and β-elimination from these complexes to give hydride complexes [PtHCl2(C3H5)L] are predicted to have high activation energies. The isomerisation of [PtCl2(C3H6)L2] to the ylide complex [PtCl2{CH(L)CH2CH3)L] is instead predicted to occur after cleavage of a Pt–C bond to give an intermediate that can be considered as a corner platinated cyclopropane, leading to 1,3-hydrogen transfer without a hydridoplatinum intermediate. The reaction of [PtCl2{CH(L)CH2CH3}L] to give the alkene complex [PtCl2(CH2 = CHCH3)L] involves dissociation of the C–L bond followed by a 2,1-hydrogen transfer. The selectivity of related reactions from phenylcyclopropane follows naturally from these mechanisms.

Abstract
The isomerization and reductive elimination reactions from octahedral organometallic complexes of palladium(IV) and platinum(IV) usually occur through five-coordinate intermediates that cannot be directly detected. This paper reports a computational study of five-coordinate complexes of formulae [PtMe3(bipy)]+, [PtMe2Ph(bipy)]+, and [PtMe(CH2CMe2C6H4)(bipy)]+ (M = Pd or Pt, bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine), particularly with respect to reactivity and selectivity in reductive elimination. All of the complexes are predicted to have square pyramidal structures with the bipy and two R groups in the equatorial positions and one R group in the axial position, and axial–equatorial exchange occurs by a pairwise mechanism, with the transition state having a pinched trigonal bipyramidal (PTBP) stereochemistry, with one nitrogen and two R groups in the trigonal plane. The activation energy for isomerization is lower than that for reductive elimination in all cases. For the complexes [MMe2Ph(bipy)]+, the activation energies for reductive elimination with Me–Me or Me–Ph coupling are similar. For the complexes [MMe(CH2CMe2C6H4)(bipy)]+, the reductive elimination with Me–C6H4 bond formation from the isomer with the methyl group in the axial position is predicted and is attributed to it having the best conformation of the Me and C6H4 groups for C–C bond formation. In all cases, the selectivity for reductive elimination is similar for M = Pd or Pt, but reactivity is higher for M = Pd. The relevance of this work to selectivity in catalysis is discussed.

Abstract
The reaction of [PtMe2(6-dppd)], 1, where 6-dppd is a 1,4-bis(2-pyridyl)pyridazine derivative, with bromoalkanes BrCH2R, having a hydrogen-bond donor group R, gave the corresponding chiral products of trans oxidative addition [PtBrMe2(CH2R)(6-dppd)], 2a, R = CO2H; 3, R = 4-C6H4CO2H; 4, R = 4-C6H4CH2CO2H; 7, R = 2-C6H4CH2OH; 8, R = 4-C6H4B(OH)2; 9, R = 3-C6H4B(OH)2; and 10, R = 2-C6H4B(OH)2. Complex 2a was formed in equilibrium with two isomers formed by cis oxidative addition, while the reaction of 1 with BrCH2CH2CO2H gave mostly [PtBrMe(6-dppd)], 6. The supramolecular chemistry was studied by structure determination of six of the platinum(IV) complexes, with emphasis on the preference of the hydrogen bond acceptor (O, pyridyl N, or Br atom), formation of monomer, dimer, or polymer, and self-recognition or self-discrimination in self-assembly. Complex 7 formed a monomer with the OH···N hydrogen bond, and complexes 2a and 10 formed racemic dimers by complementary hydrogen bonding with self-discrimination between CO2H or B(OH)2 groups, respectively. Complexes 3, 4, and 9 formed polymers by intermolecular hydrogen bonding with self-recognition, with 4 containing OH···N and 3 and 9 containing OH···Br hydrogen bonds. It is concluded that there is no clear preference for the hydrogen bond acceptor group, and that the observed product depends also on the orientation of the hydrogen bond donor group.

Abstract
The oxidation of the tribenzylphosphine derivative of the doubly cylcometallated platinum(ii) complex of diphenylpyridine, 1, with PhICl2 led, as a first step, to the formation of a highly electrophilic metal centre which attacked the benzyl phosphine to give a triply cyclometallated species as the arenium ion. The highly acidic arenium ion protonated unreacted starting 1, a reaction that could be supressed by the addition of water, and gave the neutral species 2(t). Octahedral complex 2(t) was induced to reductively couple, with two five-membered rings coupling to give square planar complex 5 containing a nine-membered ring. The crystal structure of 5 showed the nine-membered ring to span trans across the square planar metal accompanied by considerable distortion: the P-Pt-N bond angle is 155.48(5)°. Oxidation of 5 with PhICl2 resulted in the addition of two chlorides and a change of the nine-membered ring ligand coordination to cis at an octahedral centre, still with considerable distortions: the P-Pt-N bond angle in the crystal structure of 6 is 99.46(5)°. Treatment of 2(t) with AgBF4 also induced a coupling to give a nine-membered ring, and the fluxional three coordinate complex 7. A mono-methylated version of 1, Me-1, was prepared and similar reactions were observed. The presence of the methyl group allowed us to observe selectivity in the coupling reaction to give the nine-membered ring, with two products (a-Me-7 and b-Me7) being initially formed in the ratio 7 : 1. The concentrations of two products changed with time giving a final ratio of 1 : 8 at room temperature (half-life 48 hours), the equilibration being made possible by a reversible C-C bond forming reaction. Reaction of complexes 7 with CO or hydrogen left the nine-membered ring intact, though oxidative degradation resulted in decomplexation of the phosphine donor, accompanied by formation of a P[double bond, length as m-dash]O group.

Abstract
Thermolysis of the RhIII-Me complex (DPEphos)RhMeI2 (1) results in reductive elimination of MeI. Mechanistic studies are consistent with SN2 attack by I- at the RhIII-Me group via two separate competing paths. Addition of sulfur and nitrogen nucleophiles allows effective competition and formation of C(sp3)-S and C(sp3)-N coupled products in high yields. C(sp3)-N bond formation is second-order in amine, consistent with amine substitution of iodide at the metal followed by nucleophilic attack at carbon by a second amine.

Abstract
The oxidation of three different complexes of the doubly cycloplatinated 2,6-di(4-fluorophenyl)pyridine ligand (namely DMSO, PPh3 and PPr3 derivatives, 1a, 1b and 1c, respectively) with the electrophilic oxidant iodobenzenedichloride was studied. In each case oxidation can yield a simple trans-dichloro platinum(iv) complex (2(t)), which subsequently isomerises to the cis isomer (2(c)). However, by changing the solvent, or performing the reaction in the presence of an additional ligating species, a five-coordinate intermediate can be trapped out and isolated. Thus, cationic species with additional DMSO or pyridine coordinated could be collected for the DMSO and PPh3 derivatives. The PPr3 derivative traps out the reactive five-coordinate species with an agostic interaction that subsequently induces a transcyclometallation reaction to give a complex with a singly cyclometallated pyridine and a cyclometallated phosphine, which was characterised crystallographically, (6c

Abstract
The reaction of the cyclic peroxides cyclobutane malonoyl peroxide and cyclopentane malonoyl peroxide to dimethylplatinum(II) complexes with the bidentate nitrogen donor ligand 4,4′-di-t-butyl-2,2′-bipyridine (bubpy) gave a mixture of the products of cis and trans oxidative addition, [PtMe2{(O2C)2C(C3H6)}(bubpy)] and [PtMe2{(O2C)2C(C4H8)}(bubpy)], respectively. The cis isomers exist with a chelating dicarboxylate ligand, forming a six-membered ring, while the trans isomers are thought to exist as oligomers, which may react with water or solvent to give complexes containing a monodentate dicarboxylate ligand. Equilibration of the product of cis oxidative addition, cis-[PtMe2{(O2C)2C(C3H6)}(bubpy)], with oxalic or phthalic acid to give equilibria with the oxalate cis-[PtMe2(O4C2)(bubpy)] or phthalate cis-[PtMe2{(O2C)2C6H4}(bubpy)] derivative, respectively, indicated the expected sequence of chelate stability oxalate > cyclobutane malonate > phthalate.

Abstract
The diphosphine ligand, N,N'-bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)isophthalamide, dpipa, contains two amide groups and can form cis or trans chelate complexes or cis,cis or trans, trans bridged complexes. The amide groups are likely to be involved in intramolecular or intermolecular hydrogen bonding. This combination of properties of the ligand dpipa leads to very unusual structural properties of its complexes, which often exist as mixtures of monomers and dimers in solution. In the complex [Au2(μ-dpipa)2]Cl2, the ligands adopt the trans, trans bridging mode, with linear gold(I) centers, and the amide groups hydrogen bond to the chloride anions. In [Pt2Cl4(μ-dpipa)2], the ligands adopt the cis,cis bridging mode, with square planar platinum(II) centers, and the amide groups form intermolecular hydrogen bonds to the chloride ligands to form a supramolecular one-dimensional polymer. Both the monomeric and dimeric complexes [PtMe2(dpipa)] and [Pt2Me4(μ-dpipa)2] have cis-PtMe2 units with cis chelating or cis,cis bridging dpipa ligands respectively; each forms a supramolecular dimer through hydrogen bonding between amide groups and each contains an unusual NH···Pt interaction. An attempted oxidative addition reaction with methyl iodide gave the complex [PtIMe(dpipa)], which contains trans chelating dpipa, while a reaction with bromine gave a disordered complex with approximate composition [Pt2Me3Br5(μ-dpipa)2], which contains trans, trans bridging dpipa ligands.

Abstract
Limited natural resources, high energy consumption, economic considerations, and environmental concerns demand that we develop new technologies for the sustainable production of chemicals and fuels. New methods that combine the selective activation of C-H bonds of hydrocarbons with oxidation by a green oxidant such as molecular oxygen would represent huge advances toward this goal. The spectacular selectivity of transition metals in cleaving C-H bonds offers the potential for the direct use of hydrocarbons in the production of value-added organics such as alcohols. However, the use of oxygen, which is abundant, environmentally benign, and inexpensive (particularly from air), has proven challenging, and more expensive and less green oxidants are often employed in transition-metal-catalyzed reactions. Advances in the use of oxygen as an oxidant in transition-metal-catalyzed transformations of hydrocarbons will require a better understanding of how oxygen reacts with transition metal alkyl and hydride complexes. For alkane oxidations, researchers will need to comprehend and predict how metals that have shown particularly high activity and selectivity in C-H bond activation (e.g. Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir) will react with oxygen. In this Account, we present our studies of reactions of late metal alkyls and hydrides with molecular oxygen, emphasizing the mechanistic insights that have emerged from this work. Our studies have unraveled some of the general mechanistic features of how molecular oxygen inserts into late metal hydride and alkyl bonds along with a nascent understanding of the scope and limitations of these reactions. We present examples of the formation of metal hydroperoxide species M-OOH by insertion of dioxygen into Pt(IV)-H and Pd(II)-H bonds and show evidence that these reactions proceed by radical chain and hydrogen abstraction pathways, respectively. Comparisons with recent reports of insertion of oxygen into other Pd(II)-H complexes, and also into Ir(III)-H and Rh(III)-H complexes, point to potentially general mechanisms for this type of reaction. Additionally, we observed oxygen-promoted C-H and H-H reductive elimination reactions from five-coordinate Ir(III) alkyl hydride and dihydride complexes, respectively. Further, when Pd(II)Me(2) and Pt(II)Me(2) complexes were exposed to oxygen, insertion processes generated M-OOMe complexes. Mechanistic studies for these reactions are consistent with radical chain homolytic substitution pathways involving five-coordinate M(III) intermediates. Due to the remarkable ability of Pt(II) and Pd(II) to activate the C-H bonds of hydrocarbons (RH) and form M-R species, this reactivity is especially exciting for the development of partial alkane-oxidation processes that utilize molecular oxygen. Our understanding of how late transition metal alkyls and hydrides react with molecular oxygen is growing rapidly and will soon approach our knowledge of how other small molecules such as olefins and carbon monoxide react with these species. Just as advances in understanding olefin and CO insertion reactions have shaped important industrial processes, key insight into oxygen insertion should lead to significant gains in sustainable commercial selective oxidation catalysis.
