Event-Based Gesture Recognition With Dynamic Background Suppression Using Smartphone Computational Capabilities

In this paper, we introduce a framework for dynamic gesture recognition with background suppression operating on the output of a moving event-based camera. The system is developed to operate in real-time using only the computational capabilities of a mobile phone. It introduces a new development around the concept of time-surfaces. It also presents a novel event-based methodology to dynamically remove backgrounds that uses the high temporal resolution properties of event-based cameras. To our knowledge, this is the first Android event-based framework for vision-based recognition of dynamic gestures running on a smartphone without off-board processing. We assess the performances by considering several scenarios in both indoors and outdoors, for static and dynamic conditions, in uncontrolled lighting conditions. We also introduce a new event-based dataset for gesture recognition with static and dynamic backgrounds (made publicly available). The set of gestures has been selected following a clinical trial to allow human-machine interaction for the visually impaired and older adults. We finally report comparisons with prior work that addressed event-based gesture recognition reporting comparable results, without the use of advanced classification techniques nor power greedy hardware.

Synaptic Delays for Insect-Inspired Temporal Feature Detection in Dynamic Neuromorphic Processors

Spiking neural networks are well-suited for spatiotemporal feature detection and learning, and naturally involve dynamic delay mechanisms in the synapses, dendrites, and axons. Dedicated delay neurons and axonal delay circuits have been considered when implementing such pattern recognition networks in dynamic neuromorphic processors. Inspired by an auditory feature detection circuit in crickets, featuring a delayed excitation by post-inhibitory rebound, we investigate disynaptic delay elements formed by inhibitory-excitatory pairs of dynamic synapses. We configured such disynaptic delay elements in the DYNAP-SE neuromorphic processor and characterized the distribution of delayed excitations resulting from device mismatch. Interestingly, we found that the disynaptic delay elements can be configured such that the timing and magnitude of the delayed excitation depend mainly on the efficacy of the inhibitory and excitatory synapses, respectively, and that a neuron with multiple delay elements can be tuned to respond selectively to a specific pattern. Furthermore, we present a network with one disynaptic delay element that mimics the auditory feature detection circuit of crickets, and we demonstrate how varying synaptic weights, input noise and processor temperature affect the circuit. Dynamic delay elements of this kind open up for synapse level temporal feature tuning with configurable delays of up to 100 ms.

Emerging memory technologies for neuromorphic computing

In this paper, we reviewed the recent trends on neuromorphic computing using emerging memory technologies. Two representative learning algorithms used to implement a hardware-based neural network are described as a bio-inspired learning algorithm and software-based learning algorithm, in particular back-propagation. The requirements of the synaptic device to apply each algorithm were analyzed. Then, we reviewed the research trends of synaptic devices to implement an artificial neural network.

A Neuromorphic Event-Based Neural Recording System for Smart Brain-Machine-Interfaces

Neural recording systems are a central component of Brain-Machince Interfaces (BMIs). In most of these systems the emphasis is on faithful reproduction and transmission of the recorded signal to remote systems for further processing or data analysis. Here we follow an alternative approach: we propose a neural recording system that can be directly interfaced locally to neuromorphic spiking neural processing circuits for compressing the large amounts of data recorded, carrying out signal processing and neural computation to extract relevant information, and transmitting only the low-bandwidth outcome of the processing to remote computing or actuating modules. The fabricated system includes a low-noise amplifier, a delta-modulator analog-to-digital converter, and a low-power band-pass filter. The bio-amplifier has a programmable gain of 45-54 dB, with a Root Mean Squared (RMS) input-referred noise level of 2.1 μV, and consumes 90 μW . The band-pass filter and delta-modulator circuits include asynchronous handshaking interface logic compatible with event-based communication protocols. We describe the properties of the neural recording circuits, validating them with experimental measurements, and present system-level application examples, by interfacing these circuits to a reconfigurable neuromorphic processor comprising an array of spiking neurons with plastic and dynamic synapses. The pool of neurons within the neuromorphic processor was configured to implement a recurrent neural network, and to process the events generated by the neural recording system in order to carry out pattern recognition.

Spatiotemporal features for asynchronous event-based data

Bio-inspired asynchronous event-based vision sensors are currently introducing a paradigm shift in visual information processing. These new sensors rely on a stimulus-driven principle of light acquisition similar to biological retinas. They are event-driven and fully asynchronous, thereby reducing redundancy and encoding exact times of input signal changes, leading to a very precise temporal resolution. Approaches for higher-level computer vision often rely on the reliable detection of features in visual frames, but similar definitions of features for the novel dynamic and event-based visual input representation of silicon retinas have so far been lacking. This article addresses the problem of learning and recognizing features for event-based vision sensors, which capture properties of truly spatiotemporal volumes of sparse visual event information. A novel computational architecture for learning and encoding spatiotemporal features is introduced based on a set of predictive recurrent reservoir networks, competing via winner-take-all selection. Features are learned in an unsupervised manner from real-world input recorded with event-based vision sensors. It is shown that the networks in the architecture learn distinct and task-specific dynamic visual features, and can predict their trajectories over time.

Racing to learn: statistical inference and learning in a single spiking neuron with adaptive kernels

This paper describes the Synapto-dendritic Kernel Adapting Neuron (SKAN), a simple spiking neuron model that performs statistical inference and unsupervised learning of spatiotemporal spike patterns. SKAN is the first proposed neuron model to investigate the effects of dynamic synapto-dendritic kernels and demonstrate their computational power even at the single neuron scale. The rule-set defining the neuron is simple: there are no complex mathematical operations such as normalization, exponentiation or even multiplication. The functionalities of SKAN emerge from the real-time interaction of simple additive and binary processes. Like a biological neuron, SKAN is robust to signal and parameter noise, and can utilize both in its operations. At the network scale neurons are locked in a race with each other with the fastest neuron to spike effectively "hiding" its learnt pattern from its neighbors. The robustness to noise, high speed, and simple building blocks not only make SKAN an interesting neuron model in computational neuroscience, but also make it ideal for implementation in digital and analog neuromorphic systems which is demonstrated through an implementation in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). A mixed-signal implementation of a polychronous spiking neural network with delay adaptation

We present a mixed-signal implementation of a re-configurable polychronous spiking neural network capable of storing and recalling spatio-temporal patterns. The proposed neural network contains one neuron array and one axon array. Spike Timing Dependent Delay Plasticity is used to fine-tune delays and add dynamics to the network. In our mixed-signal implementation, the neurons and axons have been implemented as both analog and digital circuits. The system thus consists of one FPGA, containing the digital neuron array and the digital axon array, and one analog IC containing the analog neuron array and the analog axon array. The system can be easily configured to use different combinations of each. We present and discuss the experimental results of all combinations of the analog and digital axon arrays and the analog and digital neuron arrays. The test results show that the proposed neural network is capable of successfully recalling more than 85% of stored patterns using both analog and digital circuits.
