Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM): CO2 and Water Economy

Comparative ecophysiology of five species of Sedum (Crassulaceae) under well-watered and drought-stressed conditions

Gas exchange patterns, diurnal malic acid fluctuations, and stable carbon isotope ratios of five species of Sedum were investigated to assess the ecophysiological characteristics of three different photosynthetic pathways under well-watered and drought-stressed conditions. All five species have succulent leaves and stems and were examined under identical environmental conditions. When well-watered, Sedum integrifolium (Raf.) Nels. and S. ternatum Michx. displayed C₃ photosynthesis, S. telephioides Michx. and S. nuttallianum Raf. exhibited CAM-cycling, and S. wrightii A. Gray showed CAM. When grown under a less frequent watering regime, S. integrifolium and S. ternatum exhibited CAM-cycling, whereas S. telephioides and S. nuttallianum displayed CAM-cycling simultaneously with low-level CAM. Sedum wrightii retained its CAM mode of photosynthesis. In general, leaf δ¹³C values reflected these variations in photosynthetic pathways. While all values of water-use efficiency (WUE) were greater than those reported for most C₃ and C₄ species, no correlation of malic acid accumulation in the CAM and CAM-cycling (including low-level CAM) species with increased WUE was found. Sedum wrightii (CAM) had the highest WUE value at night, yet its 24-h WUE was not different from S. ternatum when the latter was in the C₃ mode. Thus, relative water-use efficiencies of these species of Sedum were not predictable based on photosynthetic pathways alone.

Occurrence of Crassulacean acid metabolism in Cissus trifoliata L. (Vitaceae)

Evidence for the operation of CAM in the deciduous climber, Cissus trifoliata L., was obtained in field and laboratory studies. Under natural conditions, diurnal oscillations of titratable acidity and colorimetric measurements of night CO₂ fixation, determined for a period of two and a half years, suggested that acid accumulation was related to plant water status, assessed through the daily courses of stomatal resistance and xylem water potential during dry and rainy seasons. These findings were confirmed by gas exchange studies under controlled conditions which showed that the plant fixed all its CO₂ during the day when it was well irrigated; as water stress increased, dark CO₂ uptake gradually replaced fixation during the day until the plant only performed dark fixation. In severe water stress, even the rate of the latter process decreased until leaves fell.

Water relation parameters of the CAM plant Kalanchoë daigremontiana in relation to diurnal malate oscillations

In the CAM plant Kalanchoë daigremontiana, kept in an environmental rhythm of 12 h L: 12 h D in a growth chamber at 60% relative humidity and well watered in the root medium, decreasing water potentials and osmotic potentials of the leaves are correlated with malate accumulation in the dark. In the light increasing water and osmotic potentials (ψ _W and ψ _S ) are associated with decreasing malate levels. Transpiratory H₂O loss is high in dark and low in light.In continuous light, the CAM rhythm rapidly disappears in the form of a highly damped endogenous oscillation. Malate levels, and water and osmotic potentials of the leaves remain correlated as described above. However, transpiration is very high as malate levels decrease and water and osmotic potentials increase.It can concluded, that water relation parameters like total water potential (ψ _W ) and osmotic potential (ψ _S ) change in close correlation with changes of malic acid levels. As an important osmotically active solute in CAM plants, malic acid appears to affect water relations independently of and in addition to transpiration. The question remains open, whether turgor (ψ _P ) is involved in CAM regulation in intact plants in a similar way as it determines malate fluxes in leaf slices.
