Antecedent soil water content and vapor pressure deficit interactively control water potential in Larrea tridentata

Plant water potential Ψ is regulated by stomatal responses to atmospheric moisture demand D and soil water availability W, but the timescales of influence and interactions between these drivers of plant Ψ are poorly understood. Here, we quantify the effects of antecedent D and W on plant Ψ in the desert shrub Larrea tridentata. Repeated measurements of plant baseline water potential Ψ_B and diurnal water potential Ψ_D were analyzed in a Bayesian framework to evaluate the influence of antecedent D and W at daily and subdaily timescales. Both Ψ_B and Ψ_D exhibited negative, 2- to 4-d lagged responses to daily-scale D; conversely, plant Ψ_D responded almost instantaneously to subdaily D, though the direction of this response depended on antecedent moisture conditions. Plant Ψ_B and Ψ_D responded positively and immediately (no lag) to shallow W, which contrasts the negative, lagged (6-7 d) response to deep W. The changing sensitivity of Ψ_D to subdaily D highlights shifting modes of plant Ψ regulation: D effects on Ψ_D range from negative to neutral to positive depending on past conditions and time of day. Explicit consideration of antecedent conditions across multiple timescales can reveal important complexities in plant responses.

Root-soil contact for the desert succulent Agave deserti in wet and drying soil

To investigate the extent and size of root-soil air gaps that develop during soil drying, resin casts of roots of the desert succulent Agave deserti Engelm. were made in situ for container-grown plants and in the field. Plants that were draughted in containers for 7 and 14 d had 24 and 34% root shrinkage, respectively, leading to root-soil air gaps that would reduce the hydraulic conductivity at the root-soil interface by a factor of about 5. When containers were vibrated during drought, root-soil air gaps were greatly diminished, and the predicted conductivity at the interface was similar to that of the control (moist soil). For plants in the field (4 and 6 wk after the last rainfall), root shrinkage was greater than for container-grown plants, but root-soil contact on the root periphery was greater, which led to a higher predicted hydraulic conductivity at the root-soil interface. To test the hypothesis that root-soil air gaps would help to limit water efflux from roots in drying soil, the water potentials of the soil, root, and shoot of plants from vibrated containers (with gaps eliminated or reduced) and non-vibrated containers were compared. The soil water potential was lower for vibrated containers after 14 d of drought, suggesting more rapid depletion of soil water due to better root-soil contact, and the root water potential was lower as well, suggesting greater water loss by roots in the absence of root-soil air gaps. Thus, air gaps could benefit A. deserti by helping to maintain a higher root water potential in the early stages of drought and later by limiting root water loss at the root-soil interface when the water potential exceeds that of the soil.

Solute regulation and growth by roots and shoots of water-stressed maize plants

Potted maize seedlings were subjected to a single period of water stress. As the severity of water stress increased, measurements were made of leaf and root solute and water potentials, leaf diffusive conductance and leaf and root growth. After day four of the drying cycle, the rate of leaf extension and the development of leaf area were reduced. This reduction correlated well with a reduction in leaf turgor which occurred at this time. A significant accumulation of solutes in the root tips of the unwatered plants resulted in the maintenance of root turgor for the duration of the water stress treatment. Root growth of the unwatered plants was also maintained as the severity of water stress increased. A mild degree of water stress resulted in a net increase in root growth compared to the situation in well-watered plants. The significance of solute regulation and continued root growth for plants growing in drying soil is discussed.

Carbon balance, productivity, and water use of cold-winter desert shrub communities dominated by C3 and C4 species

Common generalizations concerning the ecologic significance of C₄ photosynthesis were tested in a study of plant gas exchange, productivity, carbon balance, and water use in monospecific communities of C₃ and C₄ salt desert shrubs. Contrary to expectations, few of the hypotheses concerning the performance of C₄ species were supported. Like the C₃ species, Ceratoides lanata, the C₄ shrub, Atriplex confertifolia, initiated growth and photosynthetic activity in the cool spring months and also exhibited maximum photosynthetic rates at this time of year. To compete successfully with C₃ species, Atriplex may have been forced to evolve the capacity for photosynthesis at low temperatures prevalent during the spring when moisture is most abundant. Maximum photosynthetic rates of Atriplex were lower than those of the C₃ species. This was compensated by a prolonged period of low photosynthetic activity in the dry late summer months while Ceratoides became largely inactive. However, the annual photosynthetic carbon fixation per ground area was about the same in these two communities composed of C₃ and C₄ shrubs. The C₄ species did not exhibit greater leaf diffusion resistance than the C₃ species. The photosynthesis/transpiration ratios of the two species were about the same during the period of maximum photosynthetic rates in the spring. During the warm summer months the C₄ species did have superior photosynthesis/transpiration ratios. Yet, since Ceratoides completed a somewhat greater proportion of its annual carbon fixation earlier in the season, the ratio of annual carbon fixation/transpiratory water loss in the two communities was about the same. Atriplex did incorporate a greater percentage of the annual carbon fixation into biomass production than did Ceratoides. However, this is considered to be a reflection of properties apart from the C₄ photosynthetic pathway. Both species displayed a heavy commitment of carbon to the belowground system, and only about half of the annual moisture resource was utilized in both communities.
