Abstract
In this overview, naturally occurring resorcylic lactones biosynthetically derived from alternariol and almost exclusively produced by fungi, are discussed with view on their isolation, structure, biological activities, biosynthesis, and total syntheses. This class of compounds consists until now of 127 naturally occurring compounds, with very divers structural motifs. Although only a handful of these toxins (i.e., alternariol and its 9-O-methyl ether, altenusin, dehydroaltenusin, altertenuol, and altenuene) were frequently found and isolated as fungal contaminants in food and feed and have been investigated in significant detail, further metabolites, which were much more rarely found as natural products, similarly show interesting biological activities.

Abstract
An unusual 5-C-methylated-dihydrobenzofuroisocoumarin, named multifidarin A (1), and two new ent-kaurane diterpenoids, named multikauranes A (2) and B (3), together with three known ent-kaurane diterpenoids, were isolated from the whole plants of Pteris multifida. The structures of 1-3 were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The cytotoxic activities of all new compounds were evaluated against five human tumor cell lines. A possible biosynthetic process for the formation of 1 is proposed.

Abstract
The solution-phase synthesis of a 167-member library of isocoumarins is described. The key intermediates for library generation, 4-iodoisocoumarins, are easily prepared by iodocyclization of the corresponding 2-(1-alkynyl)arenecarboxylate esters. The 4-iodoisocoumarins undergo palladium-catalyzed Sonogashira, Suzuki-Miyura, and Heck reactions to yield a diverse set of isocoumarins. Alternatively, isocoumarins, bearing hydroxyl or bromine functionalities, have been prepared by ZnCl(2)- and Pd(PPh(3))(4)-mediated cyclization of the corresponding o-iodobenzoic acid and appropriate terminal alkynes. The resulting isocoumarins were further diversified by derivatization of the hydroxyl or bromine groups. A small set of isoquinolinones were also prepared from the corresponding isocoumarins.

Abstract
A general route to alpha-pyrones and 3-substituted isocoumarins from (Z)-iodovinylic acids 1a-f or 2-iodobenzoic acids 4a-c is described, including compounds bearing a substituent on the aromatic ring. Treatment of (Z)-beta-iodovinylic acids 1a-f or 2-iodobenzoic acids 4a-c with various allenyltributyltin reagents in the presence of palladium acetate, triphenylphosphine, and tetrabutylammonium bromide in dimethylformamide provided good yields of the corresponding alpha-pyrones 3a-k or 3-substituted isocoumarins 5a-g via tandem Stille reaction and 6-endo-dig oxacyclization.

Abstract
High-speed counter-current chromatography was applied to the preparative separation and purification of naphthopyranone glycosides from a crude 70% ethanolic extract of the capitula of Paepalanthus microphyllus. The solvent system used was composed of water-ethanol-ethyl acetate-hexane (10:4:10:4, v/v). This technique led to the separation of four different naphthopyranone glycosides in pure form in only 7 h.
