Highly functionalized calix[4]arenes via multicomponent reactions: synthesis and recognition properties

Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) include several aspects of green chemistry principles, so it is obvious that chemists in different areas are increasingly interested in providing their product by multicomponent approaches. MCRs can be very useful in supramolecular chemistry, especially to produce novel supramolecular derivatives. Therefore, there are several reports of highly-functionalized calix[4]arene derivatives obtained by MCRs instead of conventional stepwise protocols during the last decade. In this paper, we have particularly focused on the exploitation of upper rim and lower rim substituted calix[4]arenes in multicomponent approaches as a facile and convenient synthetic strategy. The value of this method lies in its operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions and structural diversity of the products. Interestingly, in most cases the products afforded by this method offer unique features and applications which are highlighted in the following sections.

From monomer zinc-oxamato complexes to tetranuclear inverse 12-membered and octanuclear 12-membered metallacrowns

Interaction of ZnCl(2) with Hpko (Hpko, di-2-pyridyl-ketonoxime) results in the formation of a uninuclear Zn(Hpko)Cl(2) (1) compound or in a 12-membered tetranuclear metallacrown (OH)(2)[inv12-MC(Zn(II)N(pko))-4]Cl(2) (2) depending on the pH of the mother solution. The addition of H(3)shi (H(3)shi, salicylhydroxamic acid) leads to the formation of the octanuclear 12-membered tetranuclear metallacrown [Zn(2)]([Zn(2)(pko)(4)][12-MC(Zn(II)N(shi))-4](CH(3)OH)(2)) (3). The metallacrown core of 2 is characterized as "inverse" because the zinc atoms, rather than oxygen atoms, are oriented toward the central cavity. Two triply bridging hydroxides are accommodated in the center of the metallacrown ring. The pko(-) ligands form a propeller configuration that imposes absolute stereoisomerism with Lambda and Delta chirality. Each hydroxo oxygen bridges two octahedral zinc atoms and a tetrahedral one. The octanuclear cluster Zn(8)(shi)(4)(pko)(4)(CH(3)OH)(2) contains a 12-membered tetranuclear metallacrown core constructed by four Zn metal atoms and four shi(3-) ligands. So, a part of the cluster can be described as having the formally anionic [12-MC(Zn(II)N(shi))-4](4-) core. Two of the zinc atoms are in octahedral coordination environment while for the other two the geometry is best described as distorted trigonal bipyramidal. The metallacrown core accommodates a binuclear compound with the formula [Zn(2)(pko)(4)]. Two of the ring metal ions create binuclear units with two zinc ions, respectively, with two oxamato oxygens, and two phenolato oxygens, of the four interlinked shi(3-) ligands acting as bridging atoms.

Host-guest interaction of 12-MC-4, 15-MC-5, and fused 12-MC-4 metallacrowns with mononuclear and binuclear carboxylato complexes: structure and magnetic behavior

Interaction of manganese with salicylhydroxamic ligands leads to the formation of the 12-membered metallacrown [Mn(II)(2(2,4-DP)2(HCOO)2]-[12-MC(Mn(III)N(shi)-4](py)6 (2) (H-2,4-DP =2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)propionic acid) and the 15-membered metallacrown [Mn(II)(2,4-D)2][15-MC(Mn(III)N(shi)-5](py)6 (1) (H-2,4-D = 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). The crystal structure analysis shows that mononuclear and dinuclear alkanoato complexes are accommodated in the cavity of the metallacrown ring. The magnetic behaviour of 1 and 2 and the magnetic behaviour of the fused 12-membered metallacrown [Ni(II)(mcpa)]2-[12-MC(Ni(II)N(shi)2(pko)2-4][12-MC(Ni(II)N(shi)3(pko)-4]-(CH3OH)3(H2O) (3) (Hmcpa = 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid) have shown that the zero field and/or the population of many energy levels at low temperatures is the reason for the divergence of the susceptibility data at high fields. For compound 3, the ground state is S = 0, with S = 1 and S = 2 low-lying excited states. This leads to a non-Brillouin behaviour of the magnetisation, since the ground state is very close to the excited states.

Use of Manganese(II)-Schiff Base Complexes for Carrying Polar Organometallics and Inorganic Ion Pairs

This report concerns the carrier properties of [Mn(acacen)]-derived compounds toward polar organometallics, inorganic ion pairs, and salts. Such properties are the consequence of Mn(II) behaving as a Lewis acid and the O&arcraise;O bite of the bidentate Schiff base ligand toward alkali cations. The starting compounds, which occur in a dimeric form, [Mn(acac-L-en)](2) [L' = CH(2)CH(2) (1); L" = C(6)H(10) (2); L"' = R,R-C(6)H(10) (3)] have been synthesized either via a metathesis reaction from MnCl(2) or using [Mn(3)Mes(6)]. The reaction of 1-3 with lithium organometallics allowed the isolation of [Mn(acac-L-en)(R)Li(DME)] [R = Me, L = L' (4); R = Ph, L = L' (5); R = Mes, L = L' (6); R = Me, L = L" (7); R = Me, L = L"' (8)] as metalated forms, where the alkyl or aryl group is sigma-bonded to Mn(II), while the lithium cation is anchored to the Schiff base ligand. The metalated forms 4-8 react with PhCHO to give the corresponding lithium alkoxide, which remains bound in its ion-pair form to the [Mn(acacen)] skeleton in [Mn(2)(acac-L'-en)(2)Li(2)(OCH(Ph)Me)(2)](n)() (9). The use of 8, which has a chiral bridge across two nitrogen atoms, did not lead to a significant asymmetric induction in the reaction with PhCHO, because of the long separation between the lithium cation and the stereogenic center. The metalated form 4 was able to transfer the methyl group to the nitrile function to give the corresponding lithium-imide which then remains bonded to [Mn(acacen)] as the ion pair in a dimeric structure, as revealed for [Mn(2)(acac-L'-en)(2)Li(2)(DME){N=C(Ph)Me}(2)](n)() (10). Their reaction with 1 appears to depend on the steric bulkiness of the alkyl group in NaOR, resulting in either monomeric adducts, i.e. in [Mn(acac-L'-en)(2,6-Bu(t)(2)C(6)H(3)O)Na(DME)(2)] (11.2DME), or polymeric structures, like in [Mn(acac-L'-en)Na(DME)(&mgr;-OEt)](n)() (13). All the dimeric units reported in this paper show a slight antiferromagnetic coupling between the two Mn(II) assisted by bridging alkoxo groups.
