Wide-spread myelinated nerve fibers of the optic disc: do they influence the development of myopia?

Unilateral Myelinated Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer, High Myopia, and Amblyopia: A Case Report

Straatsma syndrome corresponds to the presence of myelinated retinal nerve fibers with ipsilateral myopia and amblyopia. Strabismus is also a common finding in this entity, and patients with strabismus usually present a poor visual prognosis. We report the case of a two-year-old male diagnosed with Straatsma syndrome with a follow-up period of 2.5 years. Despite the early diagnosis and institution of treatment, there was no significant response to therapy. Early recognition of Straatsma syndrome and aggressive treatment of amblyopia may result in better outcomes.

Corneal cross-linking for the treatment of keratoconus in a patient with ipsilateral myelinated retinal nerve fiber layer

Keratoconus associated with myelinated retinal nerve fibers is not frequent and the relationship between the two pathologies is difficult to explain, therefore studies and further investigation are required. The etiology of each condition may suggest the role of genetic factors. Follow-up is important to evaluate the progression of keratoconus and myelination. Here we describe the unusual coexistence of keratoconus and ipsilateral myelinated retinal nerve fiber layer and, for the first time, the corneal cross-linking treatment in this condition.

The results of electrophysiological tests in unilateral extensive peripapillary myelinated nerve fibers: report of three cases

The purpose of this study is to describe clinical and electrophysiological findings of three patients with unilateral extensive peripapillary myelinated nerve fibers. Three patients with unilateral extensive peripapillary myelinated nerve fibers were examined. A complete ophthalmologic examination including uncorrected and best spectacle corrected visual acuities (UCVA, BSCVA) on Snellen charts, dilated fundoscopy, fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), optical coherence tomography (OCT), perimetry and electrophysiological tests was performed. ERG results of both eyes were normal in all cases. FFA showed hypofluorescence at the myelinated nerve fibers (MNF) area in the affected eyes. We found a visual field defect resembling arcuat scotom at perimetry of the affected eyes. In OCT, there was hyper-reflectivity in reply to MNF. In all cases, pattern ERG results of the affected eyes showed decreased amplitudes and increased latencies of P50 and N95 waves. P100 amplitudes of PVER and FVER were decreased, and latencies were increased in all affected eyes. Extensive peripapillary myelinated nerve fibers may cause changes in PERG and VER.
