Ultrafast extraction of uranium from seawater using photosensitized biohybrid system with bioinspired cascaded strategy

The highly effective utilization of uranium resources in global seawater is a viable method to satisfy the rising demands for fueling nuclear energy industry. Herein, inspired by the multi-mechanisms of the marine bacteria for uranium immobilization, CdS nanoparticles are deposited on the cell of marine bacterial strain Bacillus velezensis UUS-1 to create a photosensitized biohybrid system UUS-1/CdS. This system achieves high uranium extraction efficiency using a cascaded strategy, where the bacterial cells guarantee high extraction selectivity and the photosensitive CdS nanoparticles realize cascading photoreduction of high soluble U(VI) to low soluble U(IV) to enhance extraction capacity. As one of the fastest-acting adsorbents in natural seawater, a high extraction capacity for uranium of 7.03 mg g^-1 is achieved with an ultrafast extraction speed of 4.69 mg g^-1 d^-1. The cascaded strategy promisingly improves uranium extraction performance and pioneers a new direction for the design of adsorbents to extract uranium from seawater.

Extracellular antimutagenic activities of selected probiotic Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus spp. as a function of growth phase

The capabilities of selected strains from genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium to produce extracellular bioactive compounds with antimutagenic properties against benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and sodium azide (SA) were tested as a function of growth phase. The bacterial supernatants from exponential and stationary phases were characterized with different patterns of antimutagenic activity against the two mutagens. All lactobacilli exhibited either no effect or low antimutagenicity against BaP during exponential growth. Higher antimutagenic activities of lactobacilli supernatants were observed in the stationary phase against SA as well. An exception was Lactobacillus sakei 23K which expressed a relatively low percent of inhibition of mutagenesis (PI = 28.14 +/- 7.41) in the exponential phase and no antimutagenic activity in the stationary phase. Of the bifidobacteria, only Bifidobacterium adoleascentis ATCC 15703 exhibited higher antimutagenecity against BaP in the exponential phase. The same bacterial supernatants however, did not possess any antimutagenicity against SA in either the exponential or stationary phases. B. bifidum ATCC 11863 did not express any significant differences in its activity against either BaP or SA in the exponential or stationary phases. Only B. breve ATCC 15700 expressed a high antimutagenic effect against SA in the stationary phase but exhibited no effect during exponential growth. Overall, bacterial antimutagenic responses were associated with growth phase and type of mutagen.

Potassium acetate by fermentation with Clostridium thermoaceticum

Potassium acetate is currently made by reacting petroleum-based acetic acid with potassium hydroxide. An alternate process, anaerobic fermentation of dextrose with Clostridium thermoaceticum, could be used and could possibly be cheaper. Growth characteristics and productivity of the fermentation were optimized to maximize acetate concentration in the broth. The effects of pH, type, and concentrations of nutrients and reducing agents were also evaluated. Corn steep liquor and stillage from an ethanol plant were effective and much cheaper substitutes for yeast extract. Preconcentrating the cells by ultrafiltration improved productivity, resulting in an acetic acid concentration of 53.6 g/L in 50 h at pH 6.5 using corn steep liquor. Sodium sulfide could be substituted for cysteine as the reducing agent with yields greater than 0.9 g acetic acid/g glucose.

Precipitation of cadmium by Clostridium thermoaceticum

Cadmium at an initial concentration of 1 mM was completely precipitated by cultures of Clostridium thermoaceticum in complex medium. The precipitation was energy dependent and required cysteine, although cysteine alone did not act as a growth substrate. Electron microscopic analysis revealed localized areas of precipitation at the surfaces of nonstarved cells as well as precipitate in the surrounding medium. The addition of cadmium had no apparent effect on growth or acetogenesis. However, nickel and cadmium were synergistically toxic at a concentration (1 mM) at which neither alone was toxic. The amount of protein extracted from cadmium-treated cultures was twofold higher than that in control extracts, and the amount of total sulfide was fourfold higher in cultures containing cadmium than in control cultures. Comparable levels of cysteine desulfhydrase activity were observed in extracts of both cadmium-treated and control cultures, but the enzyme activity was expressed maximally about 24 h earlier in the cadmium-treated cultures than in the untreated controls.
