Regulation of sex-specific feeding behavior in fiddler crabs: physiological properties of chemoreceptor neurons in claws and legs of males and females

Sex differences in behavioral decision-making and the modulation of shared neural circuits

Animals prioritize behaviors according to their physiological needs and reproductive goals, selecting a single behavioral strategy from a repertoire of possible responses to any given stimulus. Biological sex influences this decision-making process in significant ways, differentiating the responses animals choose when faced with stimuli ranging from food to conspecifics. We review here recent work in invertebrate models, including C. elegans, Drosophila, and a variety of insects, mollusks and crustaceans, that has begun to offer intriguing insights into the neural mechanisms underlying the sexual modulation of behavioral decision-making. These findings show that an animal's sex can modulate neural function in surprisingly diverse ways, much like internal physiological variables such as hunger or thirst. In the context of homeostatic behaviors such as feeding, an animal's sex and nutritional status may converge on a common physiological mechanism, the functional modulation of shared sensory circuitry, to influence decision-making. Similarly, considerable evidence suggests that decisions on whether to mate or fight with conspecifics are also mediated through sex-specific neuromodulatory control of nominally shared neural circuits. This work offers a new perspective on how sex differences in behavior emerge, in which the regulated function of shared neural circuitry plays a crucial role. Emerging evidence from vertebrates indicates that this paradigm is likely to extend to more complex nervous systems as well. As men and women differ in their susceptibility to a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders affecting shared behaviors, these findings may ultimately have important implications for human health.

Identification and activity-dependent labeling of peripheral sensory structures on a spionid polychaete

In marine sedimentary habitats, chemoreception is thought to coordinate feeding in many deposit-feeding invertebrates such as polychaetes, snails, and clams. Relatively little is known, however, about the chemosensory structures and mechanism of signal transduction in deposit feeders. Using electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and immunohistochemistry, we investigated the structure and function of putative chemosensory cells on the feeding appendages of a deposit-feeding polychaete species, Dipolydora quadrilobata. Tufts of putative sensory cilia were distributed over the prostomium and feeding palps and typically occurred next to pores. Examination of these regions with transmission electron microscopy revealed multiciliated cells with adjacent glandular cells beneath the pores. The sensory cells of prostomium and palps were similar, displaying an abundance of apical mitochondria and relatively short ciliary rootlets. Staining with antiserum against acetylated alpha-tubulin was examined by CLSM, and revealed axonal processes from putative sensory tufts on the palp surface to palp nerves, as well as many free nerve endings. Activity-dependent cell labeling experiments were used to test the sensitivity of putative sensory cells on the palps to an amino acid mixture that elicited feeding in previous behavioral experiments. In static exposures, the number of lateral and abfrontal cells labeled in response to the amino acid mixture was significantly greater than in the controls. Ultrastructural, positional, and now physiological evidence strongly suggests that spionid feeding palps are equipped with sensory cells, at least some of which function as chemoreceptors.

Ecological consequences of chemically mediated prey perception

To locate food, mobile consumers in aquatic habitats perceive and move towards sources of attractive chemicals. There has been much progress in understanding how consumers use chemicals to identify and locate prey despite the elusive identity of odor signals and the complex effects of turbulence on chemical dispersion. This review highlights how integrative studies on behavior, fluid physics, and chemical isolation can be fundamental in elucidating mechanisms that regulate species composition and distribution. We suggest three areas where further research may yield important ecological insights. First, although basic aspects of stimulatory molecules are known, our understanding of how consumers identify prey from a distance remains poor, and the lack of studies examining the influence of distance perception on food preference may result in inaccurate estimation of foraging behavior in the field. Second, the ability of many animals to find prey is greatest in unidirectional, low turbulence flow environments, although recent evidence indicates a trade-off in movement speed versus tracking ability in turbulent conditions. This suggests that predator foraging mode may affect competitive interactions among consumers, and that turbulence provides a hydrodynamic refuge in space or time, leading to particular associations between predator success, prey distributions, and flow. Third, studies have been biased towards examining predator tracking. Current data suggest a variety of mechanisms prey may use to disguise their presence and avoid predation; these mechanisms also may produce associations between prey distributions and flow environments. These examples of how chemical attraction may mediate interactions between consumers and their resources suggest that the ecology of chemically mediated prey perception may be as fundamental to the organization of aquatic communities as the ecology of chemical deterrence.

Chemo- and mechanosensory orientation by crustaceans in laminar and turbulent flows: from odor trails to vortex streets

Crustaceans use odor and fluid mechanical cues to extract information from their environment. These cues enable animals to find resources, orient to water currents, or escape predators. Because the properties of the fluid environment affect the transmission and structure of relevant signals, a better understanding of sensory and behavioral mechanisms will be aided by considering, at the same time, the hydrodynamic context of chemo- and mechanosensory behaviors. Crustaceans occupy aquatic habitats where flows range from almost completely laminar to nearly fully turbulent. The considerable scope of hydrodynamic properties is mirrored by equally extreme variations in the complexity of the signals entrained in these flows. Ambient noise and stochastic variation increase in increasingly energetic, turbulent conditions. The sensory and behavioral mechanisms of animals that orient in turbulent environments suggest that they have, in the course of evolution, been shaped by the flow properties. Here, sensory systems are geared to extract rapidly fluctuating signals against a noisy background. They sometimes have elaborate noise filtering mechanisms that enable the detection of rather coarse types of signal features to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. In contrast, the simpler and more predictable structure of signals carried in laminar flows may allow more accurate orientation and discrimination to occur, and free animals from the burden of supporting complex noise-filtering circuitry. Future comparative investigations of sensory physiology and behavior of animals in relation to their flow environment promise to increase our understanding of orientation by means of chemo- and mechanoperception.
