Surface electromyogram spectral characterization and motor unit activity during voluntary ramp contraction in men

Motor unit properties from three synergistic muscles during ramp isometric elbow extensions

Many tasks require synergistic activation of muscles that possess different architectural, mechanical, and neural control properties. However, investigations of the motor unit (MU) mechanisms which modulate force are mostly restricted to individual muscles and low forces. To explore the pattern of MU recruitment and discharge behavior among three elbow extensors (lateral and long heads of the triceps brachii, and anconeus) during ramp isometric contractions, recruitment thresholds of 77 MUs in five young men were determined and corresponding MU discharge rates were tracked in 1-s epochs over forces ranging from 0 to 75 % of maximal voluntary isometric force (MVC). Across all forces, MUs in the lateral head discharged at higher rates than those in the anconeus (p < 0.001, Δ = 0.23). When all MUs were considered, recruitment thresholds in the long head of the triceps brachii were higher than the lateral head (p < 0.05, Δ = 0.70) with a trend (p = 0.08, Δ = 0.48) for higher recruitment thresholds in the long head compared with the anconeus. Together, these data indicate a potential mechanical disadvantage of the long head of the triceps brachii at 0° shoulder flexion. However, among low-threshold MUs (<10 % MVC), recruitment thresholds were lower in the anconeus than in both heads of the triceps brachii consistent with the expected twitch contractile and fiber type differences among these muscles. These findings illustrate the importance of considering synergistic relations among muscles used for a coordinated task, and the sensitivity of synergies to muscle architectural, mechanical, and possibly specific synaptic input factors.

Amplitude and spectral characteristics of biceps Brachii sEMG depend upon speed of isometric force generation

In the present study the influence of speed of contraction on the interplay between recruitment and firing rate of motor units (MUs) was assessed. The surface electromyographic (sEMG) signal was recorded in nine healthy subjects from the right biceps brachii using a linear electrode array during ramp isometric contractions (from 0 to 100% of the maximal voluntary force, MVC) at 5, 10, and 20% MVC s(-1) (ramp phase), followed by 10 s of sustained MVC (hold phase). The median frequency (MDF), Root Mean Square (RMS) and conduction velocity (CV) of sEMG, were computed on adjacent epochs covering a force range of 5% MVC each. Full motor unit recruitment (FMUR) point was assessed as the force level at which MDF reached its maximum value; the MDF decay during the hold phase was taken as an index of localized muscle fatigue. At 5% MVC s(-1), FMUR was reached at 52.3% MVC. At 10%MVC s(-1) FMUR was achieved at 58% MVC; while at 20% MVC s(-1) FMUR point was located at 77% MVC, being statistically different from 5 and 10% MVCs(-1) ramps (p<0.05). The MDF decay was steeper at higher speed. CV modifications mirrored those reported for MDF. The RMS increased in a curvilinear fashion and the maximum value was always attained during the hold phase. Our findings suggest that MU recruitment strategies are significantly related to the speed of contraction even in a single muscle.

Motor unit recruitment and EMG power spectra during ramp contractions of a bifunctional muscle

Surface electromyograms (EMGs) were analysed on the short and long head of the biceps brachii (BBSH and BBLH) during single (F and S) or dual (F+S) flexion and supination tasks. It was confirmed, by the analysis of EMG root-mean-square (RMS) values, that the highest activations of BBSH and BBLH were obtained during a maximal dual task. This study was essentially concerned with the analysis of power spectra data obtained during progressive or ramp contractions (RCs). The shape of the power spectra established during the first second of the RCs differs between F, S and F+S tasks. Differences in mean power frequency (MPF) calculated during RCs would be representative of a recruitment of motor units (MUs) that is, at least partly, task-dependent. In order to compare MPF values calculated from RCs performed under different mechanical conditions (F, S and F+S), MPF-RMS(PSD) relationships have been established (RMS(PSD) being defined as the power spectrum density RMS). Both BBSH and BBLH exhibited initial MPF values higher in supination RC than in flexion RC. Because of plateau values reached at the same level of muscle activation whatever the task performed, the slope of the MPF-RMS(PSD) relationship was lower in S than in F. These results are in favour of MU recruitment that is, at least partly, different in F and in S conditions. Dual submaximal tasks seem to mix the activation of the F and S subpopulations of MUs as revealed by the spectral parameters obtained during F+S ramp contractions. This study could find some implication in the field of muscle rehabilitation or reinforcement.

Relation between the size of motor units and the spectral characteristics of their action potentials. kazuseki@iname.com

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to clarify the influence of the size of an individual motor unit on the spectral characteristics of its motor unit action potentials (MUAPs).

METHODS

In 4 human subjects, we first averaged the isometric force and the surface EMG signals triggered by the intramuscularly recorded action potentials of each motor unit during voluntary isometric contraction. Then, we obtained averaged twitch contraction curves, averaged MUAPs derived from surface EMG signals (S-MUAPs), and the power spectrum of the S-MUAPs. Finally, we tested for correlations among these results in each subject.

RESULTS

There was a positive correlation among the mean power frequency of the S-MUAPs, the maximal amplitude of the S-MUAPs, and the maximal twitch tension of their motor unit in each subject (r = 0.58-0.85; P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Since the twitch tension and the amplitude of the S-MUAPs are well-known predictors of the size of motor units, we conclude that the spectral characteristics of the S-MUAPs reflect the size of the motor unit from which they originate.

Firing rate modulation of human motor units in different muscles during isometric contraction with various forces

To examine the factors affecting the control of human motor units, rate coding strategies of the motor units were investigated in upper limb and intrinsic hand muscles during voluntary isometric contraction of steady force levels up to 80% of maximal voluntary contraction. Numerous spike trains from single motor units were recorded from the m. first dorsal interosseous (FDI) and the m. biceps brachii (BB) of eight human subjects by means of tungsten micro-electrodes, and the mean firing rate (MFR) was calculated for each subject and inter-individual comparisons made. The MFRs of the FDI were larger than that of the BB at the higher force level, and substantial differences were not found between these muscles at the lower force level. The slope of the linear regression line of MFRs vs. exerted forces for the FDI was more than twice that for the BB. Therefore, isometric force control of the FDI depends more on the rate coding strategy. The difference in rate coding between the FDI and BB motor units may be determined by factors other than muscle fiber composition, because both muscles are known to possess a similar composition of fiber types. Possible mechanisms underlying these characteristics of rate coding strategy are considered in this report.

Muscle sound and electromyogram spectrum analysis during exhausting contractions in man

The changes in the soundmyogram (SMG) and electromyogram (EMG) frequency content during exhausting contractions at 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) were investigated by the spectral analysis of the SMG and EMG detected from the biceps brachii muscles of 13 healthy men. The root mean squares (rms) of the two signals were also calculated. Throughout contraction the EMG rms always increased while this was true only at 20% MVC for the SMG. A marked decrease was detected at 60% and 80% MVC. With fatigue the EMG spectra presented a compression towards the lower frequencies at all exercise intensities. The SMG showed a more complex behaviour with a transient increase in its frequency content, followed by a continuous compression of the spectra, at 60% and 80% MVC, and a nearly stable frequency content at lower contraction intensities. This study suggested that different aspects of the changes in the motor unit's activation strategy at different levels of exhausting contractions can be monitored by SMG and EMG signals.
