Abstract
Mitotic chromosomal aberrations and DNA polymorphism (RAPD marker) were carried out on the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus collected from five sites in Minia governorate, Egypt to test their applicability as biomonitors for heavy metal contaminants of water. The diploid chromosome number of O. niloticus population was 2 n = 44. Different types of chromosomal aberrations were recorded (e.g., deletion, ring, centromeric attenuation, end-to-end association, dicentric chromosome, stickiness chromosomes, endomitosis, fragments and chromatid gap). The chromosomal aberrations varied between O. niloticus population collected from five sites, and the most common type was ring (R) chromosomes. Samples obtained from Bahr Yousef and Irrigation drain exhibited the highest aberration frequency. The frequency of chromosomal aberration was positively correlated with the concentration of heavy metals where their concentration in the surface water of Irrigation drain and Bahr Yousef exceeded the limits defined by WHO as well as the concentration of Pb in muscles. The RAPD marker was also used to identify genetic variation among Nile tilapia samples collected from five different water sources. It created polymorphic and unique bands that can be used as genetic markers to track DNA variations. The dendrogram also revealed that exposure to heavy metal pollution causes gradual accumulation of variance, whereas areas subjected to environmental stress showed higher genetic variation and clustered together.

Abstract
The karyotype and constitutive heterochromatin pattern of the white stork Ciconia ciconia samples obtained from Manzala lake, Dimiaat, Egypt was described. Somatic cells of Ciconia ciconia samples have diploid number 2n= 68 chromosomes. Out of 68 chromosomes, 11 pairs including sex chromosomes were macrochromosomes and the remaining pairs were microchromosomes. Of the 11 macrochromosome pairs, no.1, 2, 4 and 5 were submetacentric and pairs no. 6, 7 and 8 were described as metacentric. In addition, the autosome pair no.3 was subtelocentric, while autosome pair no.9 was acrocentric. Also, the sex chromosome Z represents the fourth one in size and it was classified as submetacentric while, W chromosome appeared as medium size and was acrocentric. Furthermore, C-banding pattern (constitutive heterochromatin) revealed variation in their sizes and occurrence between macrochromosomes. Pairs no. 7 and 8 of autosomes exhibited unusual distribution of heterochromatin, where they appeared as entirely heterochromatic. This may be related to the origin of sex chromosomes Z and W. However, there is no sufficient evidence illustrate the appearance of entirely heterochromatic autosomes. Therefore, there is no available cytogenetic literature that describes the C-banding and karyotype of Ciconia Ciconia, so the results herein are important and may assist in cytogenetic study and evolutionary pattern of Ciconiiformes.

Abstract
The Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia are hotspots of murine biodiversity, but no species from the Arakan Mountain system that demarcates the border between the two areas has been subjected to molecular phylogenetic analyses. We examined the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences in six murine species (the Rattus rattus species complex, R. norvegicus, R. nitidus, Berylmys manipulus, Niviventer sp. and Mus musculus) from Manipur, which is located at the western foot of the mountain range. The sequences of B. manipulus and Niviventer sp. examined here were distinct from available congeneric sequences in the databases, with sequence divergences of 10-15%. Substantial degrees of intrapopulation divergence were detected in R. nitidus and the R. rattus species complex from Manipur, implying ancient habitation of the species in this region, while the recent introduction by modern and prehistoric human activities was suggested for R. norvegicus and M. musculus, respectively. In the nuclear gene Mc1r, also analyzed here, the R. rattus species complex from Manipur was shown to possess allelic sequences related to those from the Indian subcontinent in addition to those from East Asia. These results not only fill gaps in the phylogenetic knowledge of each taxon examined but also provide valuable insight to better understand the biogeographic importance of the Arakan Mountain system in generating the species and genetic diversity of murine rodents.

Abstract
The karyotypes of three rat species from Hainan Island, China, were examined. Niviventer fulvescens (Gray, 1847) had 2n=46 and FN=64, similar to the karyotypes reported for N. fulvescens from Southeast Asia, while Niviventer lotipes () had 2n=52 and FN=66, which is distinct from the known karyotypes of other Niviventer species. Niviventer lotipes was recently considered conspecific with N. tenaster (), but the two were found to have extremely different karyotypes (2n=52 and FN=66 in N. lotipes; 2n=46 and FN=54 in N. tenaster). Therefore, in this paper N. lotipes is considered a valid species for the first time; it is distinct from N. tenaster and endemic to Hainan Island, where N. lotipes is differentiated from N. fulvescens by larger body and skull sizes, a shorter tail, and darker coloration. Rattus nitidus (Hodgson, 1845) from Hainan Island had 2n=42 and FN=62, which is similar to the reported karyotypes of conspecific populations in Southeast Asia.

Abstract
Different cytogenetic techniques were used to analyze the chromosomes of white-bellied rat, Niviventer confucianus from Mt. Tai and Jinan, Shandong Province and Ningshan, Shaanxi Province of China. Shandong populations have 2n = 46 chromosomes with 4 metacentric, 2 subtelocentric, 16 telocentric pairs of autosomes and the submetacentric X and telocentric Y. The chromosomal arm number (NF) of the two populations was 56. Shaanxi population has 2n = 46 chromosomes with 4 metacentric, 1 submetacentric, 1 subtelocentric and 16 telocentric pairs of autosomes and the submetacentric X and telocentric Y. The karyotype of Ningshan population showed NF = 58. As the result of the comparison of C- and G-banding patterns, and compare with other species in the genus Niviventer, we suppose that the chromosomal evolution of Niviventer involved in pericentric inversion and heterochromatin growth. The submetacentric chromosomes of Shaanxi population would be originated from the growth of heterochromatin of the subtelocentric chromosome of Shandong population.

Abstract
Extensive polymorphism was found in mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) of Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus). The restriction endonuclease cleavage patterns of mtDNAs of laboratory rats, wild rats, tumor cells, and culture cells were compared. The polymorphism is defined by two criteria; one is cleavage site variation and the other is length polymorphism of restriction fragments. The cleavage site variation may be caused by point mutation, and the length polymorphism by sequence deletions or insertions. At least five types, types A-E, were identified by cleavage site variations, and two groups, a and b, were identified by length polymorphism of one HpaII fragment, Hpa5. All types except type C belonged to either group-a or group-b, whereas both groups were found in type C. Differentiation of polymorphic Norway rat mtDNA types and the experimental use of the polymorphism are discussed.

Abstract
All seventeen black rats collected from Mauritius Island were characterized by having many extra small acrocentric autosomes. Their basic karyotype was of Oceanian type, because of the presence of the large metacentric M1 and M2 pairs, but chromosome numbers in 13 specimens among them were 42, those of 3 specimens 43, and those of the remaining one specimen 44. Although the Oceanian type rat had 2 small acrocentric autosomes (pair no. 13), 16 Mauritius rats had 10 small acrocentrics, and the remaining one had 8 small acrocentrics. Comparative karyotype analysis between Oceanian and Mauritius type rats showed that the extra small acrocentrics found in Mauritius rats were due to Robertsonian fission of small metacentric pairs no. 14 and 18 of the original Oceanian type rat. Only one rat with 8 small acrocentrics showed the heteromorphic pair no. 18 consisting of one metacentric and two acrocentrics. The large metacentric M1 chromosome in 13 of 17 rats examined showed homologous pair, but two of them were heteromorphic by involving one metacentric M1 and two acrocentrics. In the remaining two rats M1 chromosome was not observed, but acrocentric pairs no. 4 and 7 were included. These acrocentrics were also suggested to be originated from Robertsonian fission of the large metacentric M1 chromosome. Robertsonian fission seemed to be one of the important mechanism found in karyotype evolution.

Abstract
Mitochondrial DNA's (mtDNAs) were prepared from various kinds of individual Norway rats, Rattus norvegicus, and from three types of individual black rats, Rattus rattus, (Asian type, Ceylon type, and Oceanian type). Intra- and interspecies divergence of their mtDNA sequences were calculated based on changes in restriction endonuclease cleavage sites. The extent of intraspecies divergence of black rats (about 8%) is much larger than that of Norway rats (1%) and the mtDNA of Asian-type black rats resembles the mtDNA of Norway rats more closely than it resembles the mtDNA of other types of black rats. These results strongly suggest that during the course of intraspecies differentiation of black rats, probably long after the separation of the three types of black rats, some Asian-type black rats were isolated sexually and formed a new species, Norway rats. On the basis of our observations we propose a hypothetical process to explain the evolution of animal mtDNA.

Abstract
Human and higher primate chromosomes have been compared by general and regional banding methods, including hybridization in situ. The general banding patterns of the chromosomes of gorilla, chimpanzee, and orangutan, but not gibbon, are similar to those of the human. Preliminary results show that chromosomes with similar banding patterns in different species often carry the same genes. Repetitious DNA's have undergone changes in structure and distribution which are reflected in changes in the regional banding patterns. These studies confirm that the evolutionary distance between the gibbon and the orangutan is relatively great compared to the distance between the orangutan and the other great apes, and suggest that man is more closely related to the gorilla than to the chimpanzee.
