Abstract
Nucleolus organizer region (NOR) activity was analysed in four types of males of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans, possessing two kinds of supernumerary heterochromatin: a B chromosome and a supernumerary chromosome segment proximally located on the smallest autosome (S11). In males lacking extra heterochromatin, the four active NORs located on the S9, S10, S11, and X chromosomes showed independent activity patterns, but several kinds of dependence appeared in the presence of supernumerary heterochromatin. Furthermore, temporal changes in NOR activity were observed during the first 2 weeks of adult life in standard males but not in males carrying supernumerary heterochromatin. It is suggested that all these effects are related to the DNA content of both types of extra heterochromatin.

Abstract
Interannual evolution of a polymorphism for a supernumerary segment in the smallest autosome of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans has been analysed in two natural populations. The polymorphism seemed to be stable in both populations, despite its undertransmission through heterozygous females carrying B chromosomes. Analyses of the effects of the extra segment on mating behaviour failed to show differential mating success in any sex or consistent effects on mating pattern. These results are discussed in relation to the maintenance of this polymorphism in natural populations.

Abstract
Among the subfamilies of Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae sensu lato (s.l.) includes 6000 species distributed in 43 tribes. Approximately 100 of these species were cytogenetically analyzed and most of them presented 2n=18=16+Xy(p), which was smaller than 2n=20=18+Xy(p) considered basal for Polyphaga. However, some groups of species presented maintenance of the basal diploid number and others showed increase in this number. Certain species of the latter group also exhibited variation in the type of sex chromosome system (SCS). Considering the recent taxonomic revision accomplished for the Cassidinae s.l. species, the existence of phylogenetic relationship for some species of this subfamily, the high diversity of species of this group in the Neotropical region, and the low number of Cassidinae s.l. species karyotyped so far, the aim of the present work was to establish the main mechanisms involved in the karyotype evolution of this subfamily through the study of seven species of the Brazilian fauna and overview of the cytogenetic data. The individuals were collected in southeast and south of Brazil. The chromosomal preparations obtained from embryo and testes of adult males were stained with Giemsa solution. The species Agroiconota inedita (2n=42=40+Xy(p)), Charidotella (s.str.) immaculata (2n=22=20+Xy(p)), Charidotella (s.str.) sexpunctata (2n=22=20+Xy(p)), and Stolas chalybaea (2n=24=22+Xy(p)) revealed diploid number higher than that established as basal for Polyphaga and biarmed chromosomes. The karyotype of Cteisella confusa, Deloyala cruciata, and Metriona elatior showed the chromosomal formulae 2n=18=16+Xy(p) considered modal for Cassidinae s.l. and biarmed chromosomes. The seven species exhibited easily identified sex chromosomes due to their size and/or morphology. The analysis of meiotic cells of all the species showed pachytenes with a positively heteropycnotic block probably corresponding to the sex chromosomes; diplotenes with a high number of bivalents with two chiasmata and sex chromosomes in a parachute configuration, and metaphases II that confirmed the chromosomal morphology, the type of SCS, and the regular segregation of all chromosomes. The data regarding to the number and morphology of the chromosomes, their behaviour during meiosis, and type of SCS were inedit for the majority of these species. In relation to the all Cassidinae s.l. species that presented SCS of the Xy(p) type, A. inedita was that with the highest diploid number. Furthermore, this work reported for the first time the cytogenetic information of representatives of the genera Cteisella and Metriona. Taking into account the phylogenetic and cytogenetic data of Cassidinae s.l. species, the karyotype differentiation of this group seems to have occurred from the basal karyotype of Polyphaga by decrease in the chromosome number and subsequent increase in this number. Pericentric inversion, centric fusion and fission seem to have been the main mechanisms that promoted the evolution of the autosomes. However, in the sex chromosome evolution, the mechanisms involved were centric fission and/or chromosomal translocation.

Abstract
Considering an estimated number of millipedes of approximately 80,000, cytogenetic studies on these animals are rare, as only a total of 70 species have their karyotypes described. The present study reports on the chromosomal number of four Brazilian diplopods of the family Spirostreptidae: Urostreptus atrobrunneus with 2n=24, XY; Gymnostreptus olivaceus 2n=12, XY and Alloporus araraquarensis and A. principes, 2n=18, XY. The C-banding pattern and NOR staining of U. atrobrunneus, G. olivaceus and A. araraquarensis are described.

Abstract
The South American species, Dichroplus elongatus, is polymorphic for B chromosomes and supernumerary segments in chromosome pairs M6 (SS6), S9 (SS9) and S10 (SS10). Both forms of supernumerary heterochromatin shape chiasma frequency and distribution and B chromosomes also affect male fertility. Here, we analysed the effects of these polymorphisms on morphometric traits (total, 3rd femur, 3rd tibia, thorax and tegmen lengths) and several adult fitness components, including male and female mating success, and female reproductive potential. B chromosomes tend to decrease, and SS6 segments to increase the body size of carriers. The analysis of reproductive potential suggested that B chromosome carrying females have higher numbers of embryos per clutch and ovarioles per ovary. The uni- and multivariate analysis of mating success revealed that sexual selection favours larger individuals of both sexes and males with standard karyotype. B chromosomes may have accumulation mechanisms, which involve preferential transmission of B chromosomes to germ cells or functional gametes. The maintenance of Bs might be explained by interactions among accumulation mechanisms and trade-offs between detrimental and favourable effects on different fitness components.

Abstract
The mode of inheritance of supernumerary segments located on three different chromosome pairs was investigated in controlled crosses with specimens of the grasshopper Chorthippus jacobsi. While extra segments located on chromosomes M5 and M6 showed Mendelian inheritance, that on S8 did not. Thus, the two supernumerary heterochromatic chromosome segments located distally on the S8 chromosome accumulated through non-Mendelian transmission through both sexes. The observed transmission patterns may be explained by gametic selection for spermatozoa carrying segmented S8 chromosomes, in addition to meiotic drive for segmented S8 chromosomes in heterozygous females. The significance of these findings for the maintenance of these polymorphisms in natural populations is discussed.

Abstract
Five distinct classes of secondary constriction are found in the hylid frogs from the genera Litoria and Cyclorana, each of which is defined by its C-banding pattern and morphology (King, 1980, 1987). In-situ hybridization experiments utilizing 18S + 28S copy RNA probes derived from Xenopus and Drosophila rDNA templates, were made on nine species of frogs possessing the major constriction types. Types 1, 2, 4, and 5 are confirmed as being NORs. These results also indicate that type 1 and 2 constriction types are not differentially despiralized as previously suggested, but show absolute differences in the quantity of ribosomal DNA present. This variation took two forms, deletion polymorphism and amplification polymorphism. These differences were observed between homologues within cells and between cells within individuals. Animals possessing these 'despiralized' constrictions are therefore mosaics for both deletion and amplification polymorphisms. Polymorphism frequencies vary greatly between constriction types. Some specimens have a higher level of presence/absence heterozygosity, (L. moorei, type 2, L. nannotis type 5, L. raniformis (animal A, pair 8 type 2), than do others (L. peronii, L. rothii, L. caerulea). The above species also vary markedly in the degree and frequency of amplification of the NORs. The type 4 constrictions analysed (L. coplandi, L. lesueuri and C. novaehollandiae) have a particularly low frequency of presence/absence heterozygosity, and they have fewer size heteromorphisms between homologues. The type 3 ephemeral constrictions did not hybridize to cRNA probes at any stage. In all but one of the species studied, a single pair of chromosomes possessed an NOR. However, in L. raniformis these occurred on two pairs of chromosomes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
A non-radioactive in situ hybridization method using biotin-labelled rDNA has made it possible to localize rRNA genes not only at the secondary constriction in both homologous chromosomes No. 3 of Crepis capillaris but also in the B chromosomes occurring in the plants employed. Very clear dot-like rDNA signals at the telomeres of both arms were observed in all B chromosomes. Histochemical silver staining, which is indicative of transcriptional activity of rRNA gene clusters, resulted in both darkly-staining nucleolar constrictions of chromosomes No. 3 and silver deposits at the telomeres of Bs. We conclude that the B chromosomes of C. capillaris are isochromosomes with active rRNA genes located near both telomeres.
