Evaluation of Biomechanical Properties and Morphometric Structures of the Trachea in Pigs and Rabbits

BACKGROUND/AIM

Animals differ in the biochemical composition, attachments, and mechanical properties of tracheal cartilage. This study examined the biomechanical properties and morphological structure of the trachea of pigs, and rabbits as preclinical models.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The trachea in pigs and rabbits can be divided into four regions, cranial cervical, middle cervical, thoracic inlet, and intra-thoracic parts.

RESULTS

The total number of tracheal rings in pigs and rabbits was 32-35 and 34-38 rings, respectively. The pig bronchus first branches from the trachea, reaching the cranial lobe of the lungs before branching to the main bronchus, while the rabbit bronchus branched after the main bronchus. A comparison of the posterior region of the crosssectional trachea shows that the rabbit has a C-shape with cartilage connected to the tracheal muscle, and the pig has the tracheal muscle covered with cartilage. The trachea of pigs and rabbits decreased in tracheal thickness and size from the thoracic inlet toward the lungs. The stress-strain in the longitudinal and transverse tensile test was higher in rabbits than in pigs. The tensile stress of the four regions was significantly different in the transverse tensile test (p<0.001). In the bending test, more force was required to bend pig than rabbit tracheas. Microscopic and scanning electron microscopy showed no structural differences in tracheal cartilage between the two species.

CONCLUSION

These results suggest that there is great variation in morphology and physical properties of the trachea in pigs and rabbits. We found porcine tracheas have similar biomechanical properties to those of humans.

Radiographic tracheal lumen to vertebral ratios in the normal American Miniature Horse

BACKGROUND

Tracheal collapse in horses is reportedly uncommon; however, American Miniature Horses are more commonly affected. There is no description of the tracheal luminal diameter of American Miniature Horses, making early detection of tracheal luminal narrowing difficult.

OBJECTIVES

To 1) describe radiographic tracheal luminal diameter in clinically normal American Miniature Horses, 2) report the prevalence of subclinical tracheal collapse in a population of American Miniature Horses, and 3) use tracheal videofluoroscopy to quantify variation in tracheal luminal diameter throughout the respiratory cycle in horses with no clinical respiratory disease.

STUDY DESIGN

Descriptive observational reference interval study.

METHODS

Thirty-four American Miniature Horses with no reported history of respiratory illness were recruited. Lateral cervical and thoracic radiographs were obtained in unsedated standing horses. Dynamic fluoroscopic images were obtained of the cervical and thoracic trachea throughout the respiratory cycle. Horses were then sedated as needed and tracheoscopy was performed. Twenty-nine horses were categorised as normal, and five horses were categorised as subclinically affected based on 25% or greater tracheal narrowing using tracheoscopy for visual assessment. Radiographic tracheal lumen to vertebral body measurements were obtained throughout the cervical and thoracic trachea. Maximum and minimum fluoroscopic tracheal diameter at each site throughout the respiratory cycle was recorded.

RESULTS

A mean, median, 95% confidence interval and bootstrapped 95% reference interval of radiographic tracheal diameter to vertebral body ratios were generated in normal horses. The prevalence of subclinical tracheal collapse in this population of American Miniature Horses is 14.7%.

MAIN LIMITATIONS

Bootstrapped reference range was generated from 29 horses.

CONCLUSIONS

Radiographic tracheal measurements and ratios of the tracheal diameter to vertebral body in the normal American Miniature Horse are described herein and can be used as a guideline when screening for tracheal disease in American Miniature Horses. The prevalence of subclinical tracheal collapse in American Miniature Horses may be higher than previously reported.

A quantitative study on the trachea of the dog

This study was carried out to record the detailed morphometric structure of the trachea in dogs using 15 female and four male healthy adult mongrel dogs. The diameter and thickness of each tracheal ring were measured, the number of tracheal rings varying from 36 to 45. All data were subjected to statistical analysis which was carried out on individual sections of the trachea, i.e. the cranial cervical, middle cervical, thoracic inlet and the intrathoracic tracheal regions, which consisted of 12, 12, nine and 12 tracheal rings, respectively. Fusion of the tracheal rings was especially obvious in the cranial cervical and thoracic inlet regions as a result of neck movements. The diameter and thickness of the tracheal rings are smallest at the thoracic inlet level because the direction of the trachea changes at this point where the thoracic inlet is relatively small and surrounded by bone. The ratios of inner transverse to inner vertical and outer transverse to outer vertical diameters were almost the same, between 1.14 and 1.25 in all regions, which indicated that the trachea is near-circular in shape in the dog. At the thoracic inlet level cross-sectional lumen areas are 7 and 6% smaller than those in the middle cervical and intrathoracic regions, respectively. The thinnest cartilage was seen at the thoracic inlet level where there is a risk of tracheal collapse.
