Single incision, endoscopically assisted nephroureterectomy for tumours of the upper urinary tract

In five patients undergoing nephroureterectomy for urothelial tumour of the upper urinary tract, the lower end of the ureter was resected by resectoscope (rip and pluck procedure). We recommend this technique for common use, since it is safe and time-saving.

Stripping of the distal ureter in association with nephroureterectomy. Evaluation of the method

Nephroureterectomy is the standard treatment for transitional cell tumours of the renal pelvis. A single-incision surgical technique with use of a vein stripper to remove the distal ureter is evaluated. The method proved to be safe. There was no evidence of increased immediate or long-term risks, including extravesical recurrence of tumour. The method can be recommended for patients with renal pelvic papilloma and probably also for tumours in the upper part of the ureter, but should not be used when there is tumour in the distal ureter.

Endoscopic removal of lower ureter in nephroureterectomy

Endoscopic removal of the lower ureteral stump by transurethral resection of the mucosal cuff and intussusception of the ureter is safe, effective, and relatively easy. Although the technique has been used primarily for malignant disease, the cases described herein illustrate that it also is useful for benign disease.
