Discovering electrophysiology in photobiology: A brief overview of several photobiological processes with an emphasis on electrophysiology

The mini-review gives special attention to holistic approach and mechanisms of processes. The physical and chemical frames and background for visual perception and signaling are discussed. Perception of photons by retinal rod cells is described in more detail starting from photon absorption and culminating in ion currents. Dark noise and temperature-dependence of photocurrents in photoreceptor cells are analyzed. Perception of polarized light, its effects and informational importance are discussed based on underlying mechanisms and specialized morphological structures of biological organisms. Role of statistics of photons in photoreception is questioned. The review also pinpoints new and developing directions and raises questions for future research.

Polarization signaling in swordtails alters female mate preference

Polarization of light, and visual sensitivity to it, is pervasive across aquatic and terrestrial environments. Documentation of invertebrate use of polarized light is widespread from navigation and foraging to species recognition. However, studies demonstrating that polarization body patterning serves as a communication signal (e.g., with evidence of changes in receiver behavior) are rare among invertebrate taxa and conspicuously absent among vertebrates. Here, we investigate polarization-mediated communication by northern swordtails, Xiphophorus nigrensis, using a custom-built videopolarimeter to measure polarization signals and an experimental paradigm that manipulates polarization signals without modifying their brightness or color. We conducted mate choice trials in an experimental tank that illuminates a pair of males with light passed through a polarization filter and a diffusion filter. By alternating the order of these filters between males, we presented females with live males that differed in polarization reflectance by >200% but with intensity and color differences below detection thresholds (∼5%). Combining videopolarimetry and polarization-manipulated mate choice trials, we found sexually dimorphic polarized reflectance and polarization-dependent female mate choice behavior with no polarization-dependent courtship behavior by males. Male swordtails exhibit greater within-body and body-to-background polarization contrast than females, and females preferentially associate with high-polarization-reflecting males. We also found limited support that males increase polarization contrast in social conditions over asocial conditions. Polarization cues in mate choice contexts may provide aquatic vertebrates with enhanced detection of specific display features (e.g., movements, angular information), as well as a signaling mechanism that may enhance detection by intended viewers while minimizing detection by others.

Behavioural discrimination of polarized light in the damselfish Chromis viridis (family Pomacentridae)

In this study, we demonstrate the capacity for damselfish (green chromis, Chromis viridis) to discriminate between different e-vector orientations of ultraviolet polarized light. We examined the ability of green chromis to resolve small differences in e-vector orientation of ultraviolet polarized light. Fish were successfully trained to swim towards an e-vector orientation of polarized light using a behavioural chamber. C. viridis was able to discriminate between the horizontal and the vertical plane of ultraviolet polarized light independent of brightness content of the stimuli. However, e-vector discrimination capability disappeared when the ultraviolet portion of the light stimuli was removed, indicating that the presence of ultraviolet light was critical for e-vector discrimination. Fish could also distinguish between relatively small e-vector orientations of ultraviolet polarized light. Functional implications for high e-vector discriminative capabilities could be used in functional domains such as feeding and communication.

Multidimensional polarization sensitivity in damselfishes

Using electroretinogram recording and microspectrophotometry we investigated spectral sensitivity and ultraviolet polarization sensitivity in three species of coral reef fishes commonly known as damselfishes. Here we show that three species of damselfishes (three-spot damselfish, Dascyllus trimaculatus; blacktail damselfish, D. melanurus; and blue-green chromis, Chromis viridis) have four classes of cone photoreceptors (lambda(max) ranges: ultraviolet 357-367 nm; short wavelength-sensitive 469-478 nm; medium wavelength-sensitive 482-493 nm; long wavelength-sensitive 512-524 nm; rods 499-500 nm). The three species shared similar combined spectral sensitivity but surprisingly complicated and varied polarization sensitivity. Damselfish examined in this study have three and four channel polarization sensitivity, the most complex polarization sensitivity recorded for any vertebrate. Such capacity could play an important role in mediating a conspecific visual communication network utilizing polarized light signals in the coral reef environment.

Functional anatomy of the tectum mesencephali of the goldfish. An explorative analysis of the functional implications of the laminar structural organization of the tectum

The present paper is aimed at an exploration of the possible functional significance of the laminar organization of the goldfish tectum at both the cellular and the synaptic level. For this purpose (1) the data concerning the structure of the teleostean tectum are surveyed, (2) a conceptual framework of the intratectal connectivity in the goldfish is proposed, (3) the electrophysiological data concerning the teleosteam tectum are surveyed and (4) the degree of correlation between the structural and physiological data available is discussed. Apart from the retina, tectal afferents originate from at least 10 other brain centers. At least 5 of these projections appear to be topographically organized. Tectal afferents, neurons as well as synapses reveal a characteristic intratectal lamination pattern. Tectal efferents project to at least 10 brain centers, and have until now been shown to arise from 6 cell types. The structural data surveyed allow the construction of a conceptual framework of tectal circuitry on the basis of 3 starting points. (1) The existence of at least 8 presynaptic zones or laminae, each containing a characteristic set of presynaptic structures (afferents and axons of interneurons). (2) The fact that the tectal postsynaptic structures (somata and dendrites of tectal neurons) each have a characteristic location, extension and synaptic density, which determines the relative importance of the different presynaptic zones for each cell type. (3) The laminar specificity hypothesis, which implies that presynaptic structures that coexist in a particular presynaptic zone terminate without preference on all types of postsynaptic structures within that zone. The conceptual framework of tectal circuitry is quantified in terms of connectivity index and connective importance. Analysis of the framework constructed leads to a detailed description of the intratectal pathways involved in the processing of the 4 main streams of tectal input (i.e. visual, toral, telencephalic and 'deep' input). It was concluded that the laminar organization of the tectum is primarily relevant for multimodal integration and that the tectal cell types each receive a characteristic sample out of the multimodal information available in the different tectal layers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

A Golgi study of goldfish optic tectum

A study of goldfish optic tectum was performed with rapid-Golgi, Golgi-Kopsch and a modified Golgi-Cox impregnation which proved quite suitable to impregnate cells in the middle tectal layers and to study more closely axonal properties. Fifteen cell types are distinguished, based upon the position of dendritic trees and axonal properties. Two cell types are found with dendrites in the marginal layer: type I with an axon terminating in the central gray layer and type II without an impregnated axon. Three cell types (III, IV and V) have dendrites in a single, specific tectal layer and an axon terminating within the tectum. Five cell types (VI-X) have dendrites in two horizontal planes. Two of them have myelinated axons leaving the tectum, whereas the axons of the remaining three types project to different tectal layers. While these first ten cell types have dendrites almost exclusively in the superficial half of the tectum, the remaining five types have dendrites in deeper layers too. This especially holds for the most conspicuous tectal cells (types XII and XIII), which have dendritic trees branching at three or more horizontal levels and a myelinated axon leaving the tectum, with sometimes a very peculiar course (XIII1). Also type XI has three or more dendritic trees, but its axon was not found. The numerous cells with cell bodies in the deepest tectal layer (type XIV) have dendrites and axonal terminations anywhere in the tectum, except in the most superficial and the deepest layer. However, most dendrites occur in the optic layers, whereas the axons, always originating from the dendritic shaft in the superficial tectal half, generally terminate in the middle tectal layers. Type XV cells have their soma in the deepest tectal layer as well, but their dendrites do not reach the optic layers. Per tectal lobe the following numbers are estimated: type I : 5,000-20,000 neurons; Type III : 2,500-10,000; types IV--XIII : each 500-2,000 and type XIV : 1,000,000-2,000,000. The total number of myelinated tectal efferents is estimated at 2,000-8,000. Comparison with other Golgi studies in teleosts leads to the conclusion that the tecta of these species of fish are basically similar.
