Lactate threshold and onset of blood lactate accumulation during incremental exercise after dietary modifications

Effect of Carbohydrate Content in a Pre-event Meal on Endurance Performance-Determining Factors: A Randomized Controlled Crossover-Trial

The current study aimed to investigate the effect of the relative CHO content in a pre-event meal on time to exhaustion (TTE), peak oxygen uptake (V∙O2peak), the 2nd lactate threshold (LT2), onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA), and work economy (WE) and to compare responses between well-trained and recreationally trained individuals. Eleven well-trained and 10 recreationally trained men performed three trials in a randomized cross-over design, in which they performed exercise tests (1) after a high-CHO pre-event meal (3 g · kg⁻¹), (2) a low-CHO pre-event meal (0.5 g · kg⁻¹), or (3) in a fasted-state. The test protocol consisted of five submaximal 5-min constant-velocity bouts of increasing intensity and a graded exercise test (GXT) to measure TTE. A repeated measure ANOVA with a between-subjects factor (well-trained vs. recreational) was performed. A main effect of pre-event meal was found (p = 0.001), with TTE being 8.0% longer following the high-CHO meal compared to the fasted state (p = 0.009) and 7.2% longer compared to the low-CHO meal (p = 0.010). No significant effect of pre-event meal on V∙O2peak, LT2, OBLA, or WE (p ≥ 0.087) was found and no significant interaction effect between training status and pre-event CHO intake was found for TTE or any of the performance-determining variables (p ≥ 0.257). In conclusion, high-CHO content in the pre-event meal led to a longer TTE compared to a meal with a low-CHO content or exercising in a fasted state, both in well-trained and recreationally trained participants. However, the underlying physiological reason for the increased TTE is unclear, as no effect of pre-event meal on the main physiological performance-determining variables was found. Thus, pre-event CHO intake should be standardized when the goal is to assess endurance performance but seems to be of less importance when assessing the main performance-determining variables.

Lactate: Friend or Foe

Lactic acid has played an important role in the traditional theory of muscle fatigue and limitation of endurance exercise performance. It has been called a waste product of anaerobic metabolism and has been believed to be responsible for the uncomfortable "burn" of intense exercise and directly responsible for the metabolic acidosis of exercise, leading to decreased muscle contractility and ultimately cessation of exercise. Although this premise has been commonly taught, it is not supported by the scientific literature and has led to a great deal of confusion among the sports medicine and exercise science communities. This review will provide the sports medicine clinician with an understanding of contemporary lactate theories, including lactate's role in energy production, its contributions to metabolic acidosis, and its function as an energy substrate for a variety of tissues. Lactate threshold concepts will also be discussed, including a practical approach to understanding prediction of performance and monitoring of training progress based on these parameters.

Acute Carbohydrate Ingestion Affects Lactate Response in Highly Trained Swimmers

Purpose:

Effects of acute carbohydrate ingestion on blood lactate (BLa) response to graded exercise was examined in highly trained male and female swimmers.

Methods:

Twenty-three swimmers performed the United States Swimming Lactate Protocol, a graded interval test (5 × 200 on 5 min), following ingestion of carbohydrate sports drink (CHO) and placebo (PLA).

Results:

There was no difference in heart rate (P = .55), swim velocity (P = .95), or ratings of perceived exertion (P = .58) between beverages. There was a signifcant main effect for gender (P = .002) on BLa during all swim stages and recovery. In females, BLa was 27% to 50% higher for CHO during the first (P = .009) and second (P = .04) swim stages. Predicted BLa at selected swim velocity was higher (P = .048) for CHO versus PLA in females at 1.27 m·s−1 and higher (P < .02) for men at 1.4 m·s−1. Mean (±SD) BLa was significantly (P = .004) greater for CHO (2.7 ± 1.2) compared with PLA (2.0 ± 1.1 mmol·L−1) during the second test stage and when normalized relative to velocity (P = .004). Peak BLa after the final swim (9.6 ± 3.1 vs. 9.0 ± 3.2 mmol·L−1, P = .36) was not different between CHO and PLA.

Conclusions:

Acute CHO ingestion alters the BLa: swim velocity relationship during moderate intensity swims of an incremental swim test, particularly for females. Therefore, pretest beverage ingestion should be standardized during the administration of BLa testing to prevent potential erroneous interpretations regarding athlete’s training status.

Does exercise intensity or diet influence lactic acid accumulation in breast milk?

PURPOSE

This study examined the relationships among diet, exercise intensity, and breast milk composition in lactating women.

METHODS

Twelve lactating women were randomly assigned to either a high (N = 6; 5.03 g carbohydrate (CHO) x kg body mass (BM)(-1)) or moderate (N = 6; 3.89 g CHO x kg BM(-1)) carbohydrate diet. Milk and blood samples were collected before and after a nonexercise session (control) and maximal, lactic acid-threshold (LAT), and 20% below the LAT (LAT-20) intensities.

RESULTS

The 30-min exercise LAT bout was more stressful than the 30-min LAT-20 bout (rating of perceived exertion (RPE) = 15 vs 12, respectively, P < 0.05). Milk LA was significantly higher at 0 min following maximal exercise in the high and moderate CHO groups (1.27+/-0.56 and 1.52+/-0.49 mM, respectively) and following LAT exercise (0.19+/-0.16 and 0.25+/-0.12 mM, respectively), when compared with the control session (0.08+/-0.03 and 0.09+/-0.05 mM, respectively). This was not observed following the LAT-20 exercise in the high and moderate CHO groups (0.11+/-0.04 and 0.12+/-0.08 mM, respectively). Elevated milk LA persisted in the 30-min collection point after maximal exercise only. There was no significant effect of dietary treatment on milk or blood LA at any of the collection points.

CONCLUSIONS

In lactating women whose caloric needs are being met: 1) dietary CHO intake, within a practical range, does not influence LA levels in breast milk at rest or after exercise; 2) LA appearance in the milk is a function of exercise intensity; and 3) moderate intensity exercise (RPE = 12) will not increase breast milk LA levels.

The effect of ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate ingestion on the physical working capacity at the fatigue threshold

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) ingestion on the physical working capacity at the fatigue threshold (PWCFT). Eighteen adult males (mean age, SD = 23, 2 years) volunteered for two experiments (experiment 1, n = 9; experiment 2, n = 9). In both experiments, the subjects orally ingested 0.3 g.kg-1 body weight of NH4Cl and NaHCO3 over a 3-h period in random order on days separated by 72 h or more. In experiment 1, following ingestion of the substance, the subjects performed a discontinuous incremental cycle ergometer test to the onset of PWCFT which was estimated from integrated electromyography voltages at the vastus lateralis muscle. In experiment 2, the subjects performed a continuous PWCFT test. The results of these experiments indicated that NH4Cl and NaHCO3 ingestion had no significant (P greater than 0.05) effect on PWCFT (experiment 1: NH4Cl = 257, SD 26 W; NaHCO3 = 256, SD 22 W; t = 0.06; r = 0.866; experiment 2: NH4Cl = 231, 14 W; NaHCO3 = 216, 16 W; t = 1.78; r = 0.857).

The effect of glycogen depletion and supercompensation on the physical working capacity at the fatigue threshold

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of glycogen depletion and supercompensation on the physical working capacity at the fatigue threshold (PWCFT). Ten adult males (mean age 23 years, SD 3) volunteered as subjects for this study. During the first laboratory visit the subjects performed a maximal bicycle ergometer test for the determination of maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max). Between 48 and 72 h later, the subjects pedaled to exhaustion at a power output which corresponded to a mean of 76% of VO2max (range, 72-80%) for the purpose of glycogen depletion. For the next 3 days, the subjects were fed a 10.5 MJ.day-1 low carbohydrate diet which consisted of 7.5% carbohydrates, 22.0% protein and 70.5% fat. The subjects then performed an incremental cycle ergometer test to the onset of fatigue or PWCFT, which was estimated from integrated electromyographic voltages of the vastus lateralis muscle. For the next 3 days the subjects were fed a 10.5 MJ high carbohydrate diet which consisted of 72.2% carbohydrates, 12.4% protein and 15.4% fats for the purpose of glycogen supercompensation. The subjects then performed a second PWCFT test. A paired t-test indicated that there was no significant (p greater than 0.05) difference between the means of the PWCFT values (depletion 246 W, SD 30; supercompensation 265 W, SD 28) and they were highly correlated at r = 0.884. The results of this investigation suggested that the methods commonly used to affect glycogen depletion or supercompensation had no effect on PWCFT.

The effects of dietary manipulation upon the respiratory exchange ratio as a predictor of maximum oxygen uptake during fixed term maximal incremental exercise in man

This study examined the effects of dietary manipulation upon the respiratory exchange ratio (R = VCO2/VO2) as a predictor of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max). Seven healthy males performed fixed term maximal incremental treadmill exercise after an overnight fast on three separate occasions. The first test took place after the subjects had consumed their normal mixed diet (45 +/- 5% carbohydrate (CHO] for a period of three days. This test protocol was then repeated after three days of a low CHO diet (3 +/- 2% CHO), and again after three days of a high CHO diet (61 +/- 5% CHO). Respiratory gases were continuously monitored during each test using an on-line system. No significant changes in mean exercise oxygen uptake (VO2), VO2max or maximum functional heart rate (FHRmax) were found between tests. Mean exercise carbon dioxide output (VCO2) and R were significantly lower than normal after the low CHO diet (both p less than 0.001) and significantly higher than normal after the high CHO diet (both p less than 0.05). Moreover, compared with the normal CHO diet, the R-time relationship during exercise was at all times significantly (p less than 0.001) shifted to the right after the low CHO diet, and shifted to the left, being significantly so (p less than 0.05) over the final 5 min of exercise, after the high CHO diet.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The relationship between lactic acid and work load: a measure for endurance capacity or an indicator of carbohydrate deficiency?

The influence of low and high carbohydrate diets on the relationship between blood lactate concentration ([Lac]) and work load (WL) in incremental exercise tests (cycle ergometer) and endurance tests was evaluated in trained subjects. The relationship between relative work load (WLrel) and [Lac] in arterialized blood was compared in untrained subjects (UT) and trained male athletes (TR) after 2 days without training while consuming a high carbohydrate diet (HCD). In both groups [Lac] of 2 mmol.l-1 was reached at about 60% [(mean +/- SD) UT 57.7% +/- 6%, TR 62.7% +/- 3.8%] and 4 mmol.l-1 at about 75% (UT 75.2% +/- 3.6%, TR 77.8 +/- 2.2) of the maximal work load (WLmax). In eight cyclists the relationship between [Lac] and WL was not influenced by a 13-day training camp; however, heart rate was lower after the training camp. During their normal training programme, trained subjects had high relative work loads at their [Lac] thresholds, but after an HCD combined with an interruption of the training of 3 days, the relationship between [Lac] and WLrel was the same as in UT. In six TR a low carbohydrate diet (LCD) combined with training led to high absolute (WLabs) and WLrel at [Lac] at 2 and 4 mmol.l-1; an HCD combined with 3 days without training led to low WLabs and WLrel at the same [Lac] and to higher WLmax. In spite of the apparently lower endurance capacities TR were able to work significantly longer after HCD than after LCD (23 +/- 10.5 min and 49 +/- 16.2 min, respectively) at 65% of their WLmax. The variability of the relationship between [Lac] and WL following the dietary regimes leads to the conclusion that the "typical" [Lac] versus WL curve of endurance TR may result from a permanent glycogen deficiency.
